I really procrastinated today. Why?

I looked out the window, it's windy, the rain is pouring down, it's a run day....oh but wouldn't you rather just stay in and enjoy that extra cuppa? And as I continued to wrestle with myself I was reading about the woeful inactivity levels of a huge number of adults in the UK and I thought, well that's not me, as I mentally reeled off all I've done recently. I also reminded myself that I started my C25K journey in the winter! I've already braved rain, wind, cold and snow and decided it just wasn't on. So I dusted off my bright pink fluorescent jacket, a cap to keep the rain out of my eyes and my waterproof trail shoes as I hate wet feet. Set up some music, opened the door and just set off before the gremlins attacked again. Yes it was wet, but it was also lovely, just what I needed. A short 3k there and back. Feel good now, smug even. I now deserve that extra cuppa!Oh, but the shoes aren't waterproof anymore, I did get wet feet, the shoes are quite old though. The good news is I've got some brand new ones waiting for the next wet run. Happy running πŸƒβ€β™€οΈ or should I say splashing.

Oh well done you! I'm still thinking about it 🀣 and housework might win as I'm going swimming again later and we'll ....excuses, excuses. You must feel so pleased you went

Absolutely, once out and in my stride, it felt good. Enjoy your swim

My shoulders ache a bit from yesterday's and we didn't do much, it's been ages since I swam

That's it when you start exercising different muscles. I came back to my S&F exercises after a month not doing them and was surprised at how achey I felt afterwards. My next session I eased back on the reps and load and that was much better. Perhaps you need to ease back into the swimming too to adapt the muscles again.

The trick for wet feet is not to wear cotton socks. Trail-type synthetic mixes keep the heat in when wet. Wool mixes are good too, but often less hard wearing.

None of my running shoes are waterproof.

Try merino running socks. Lots of dew filled paths where I run, especially autumn-spring. My feet get soaked but within seconds they warm up and feel dry again. The ones I've got cost me around Β£13 two years ago and are still going strong, definitely good value for money (Balega Comfort)

Hi - I can find some with Mohair, but can't find Merino ...

Plus the Hidden Comfort are low and I imagine chafed heels and cold ankles in the winter!

Jell6 profile image

I always wear these. Never any chafing and I wear long leggings in the winter. I have had mine for years. My feet got soaked today but the socks stayed put, no chafing or rubbing and I can't say that my feet felt cold.

Do they do them with toes? πŸ‘£πŸ€£

Sure do!😊

Toe socks

Not Merino in that style, only Coolmax (Nylon). I have plenty of Injinji hiking socks already.

Balega do longer socks that cover the ankles too. My short ones completely cover the area under my trainers and have never chafed.

I wore the short ones when I did a run at -10C, I think I had thermal knee socks under them and was fine, no chilliness :)

Thanks for the tip, I'll have a look out for some.

Yay, happy days!

If it’s quite warm then running in the rain for a relatively short time is lovely. Refreshing 😁

We need to get our runs done and ticked off so good for you πŸ’ͺπŸ‘

I got drowned while out with the dog so sitting in my bathrobe now with a brew πŸ•β˜•οΈ

Sounds good to me. I wasn't overly wet until 200m from home a delivery van went through a puddle and literally showered me. Shorts were drenched!

Jell6 profile image

This post was the push I needed!. I went out and got totally drenched, to make it worse(?) I am trying to remain in zone 3 for most of my runs so they take longer, a lot longer!I know Vespina it should be zone 2, but all I have read says my zone 2 is Garmins zone 3, and it won't let me manually input the hr ranges, only the % in zones so I gave up and now just aim for Garmin zone 3.

Apart from that it was a lovely soaking run, only spoilt by the van driver who thought it would be hysterical to go through a massive puddle at speed. 🀬🀬

Ugh, van drivers are a law unto themselves. If you know your heart rate zones (ie the number) then you’ll be grand wherever you are. Definitely does take longer but also hopefully more fun.

The perils of running in the rain! You know, those pesky heart rate zones just don't work for me. It's pointless aiming for a particular zone, instead I run by how I feel aiming for that conversational pace.

Great post Sax. πŸ™ƒ

I'm looking forward to getting out and run in the rain later today. My running journey (only) started in April this year and so far I haven't had the chance to run in a shower - believe it or not.

Counting the minutes until work is done for today, ready to throw on my gear and get out there. And yes, I know I'm weird :-D

Can't believe you haven't run in the rain yet after all the rain we've had this summer. Today, actually reminded me that I really don't mind a bit of rain on my run, so hopefully I won't procrastinate next time. Enjoy your run. β˜”

Probably because I normally run early in the morning (anywhere between 5-7:00am) and it tends to be surprisingly dry. I remember one Sunday there was a very light drizzle but I was 500m from home so didn’t get caught in it.

maybe you were just not in the mood for it, and that’s fine 😊

Great post. I've a little 5km run waiting for me this evening, and the pouring rain (forecast for the whole day) had me considering putting it off. Now after reading your post my mind is made up. I will run, and I will enjoy it. :)

Well done and really motivating post as I have a 30 minute run today as part of the Magic Plan and it is going to rain later on.

I felt the same and set off feeling virtuous- the wind on the cliff path meant a very slow effirt but I’m glad I did it

Huge well done.... I do not mind the rain IF I am already out, but it really does take strength to get out there!

I cried off on Wednesday with torrential rain and wind all day... Your run sounds just fine and I am almost tempted to be more like you... next time the weather is against me... !!!

Just got in from a gloriously sunny run BUT I did listen to NRC's Rainy Run with the gorgeous Coach B. Well worth a listen.
