A warm 5K 🥵

it was 18 degrees on my 6.30 am run this morning. I wasn’t phased - after all, I went on a 28 degree run on Tuesday evening! Why then did I feel so hot on this run? The sweat was pouring off me by the end!

My warm up walk was uphill and for about 10 minutes. Starting to run, I missed the glorious scenery of the lake where I was running last week. Back home again and the first part of this route is quite pretty, a pathway through the trees and around a large pond. Then out in the open on the road for a while. I think that’s when I got hot!

A downhill for the 5th km and I realise I could finish near Tesco if I double up slightly on my route and do a little shimmy! Maybe Costa is open. So this is what I do. finish my run right outside Tesco and do a few stretches. It’s about 7:20. I go in, sweating a bit but it’s fairly quiet in there. My glasses have steamed up! 😂 I walk to the Costa in there, already anticipating my coffee … but it doesn’t open until 8:00. Ah well, I’ll have to have my coffee at home.

I’m pleased with the run, my heart rate is recovering and the run was in zones 2/3 which is what I wanted. Mission accomplished! 😀

Nice run for you this morning Jools2020, 18C is cold compared to the 28C you ran the other day but of course anyone can sweat no matter what the temperature is, sorry the coffee place wasn't open, you will know the next time to judge your run to finish at around the time Costa opens, for example if you are going to run a 5K start earlier at the time you think you will complete it to finish at 8 in time for that well deserved coffee.

Yes, Al - you’re right — and I ran a bit harder and for longer this morning! I’ll definitely start a little later if I want to have a coffee at Tesco. It was still a nice run though and I’m relaxing now after a lovely shower and breakfast of porridge with banana and maple syrup 😊

I've come t0 realise that temperature is no indication of heat.... I ran in France every summer for 9 years, mostly in temps of 32+ and couldn't understand all the fuss from my British chums about how hot it was in the 20s...I now know it's worse here, must be the humidity. Well done on your run xx

Yes, definitely the humidity. I realise that I ran for longer today and put a little more effort in, too! Thanks 😊

Wow, that sounds hard work but so worth doing, shame about Costa, open road with no shade does make us hot, well done Jools.

Thanks, Sue! I was fine for the first 3.5 km - then I was on the road with no shade. The closed Costa was very disappointing!

18°C? That's a lot cooler than the 10km I ran at 6.40pm yesterday evening with an average temp of 24.5°C (using Tempe sensor clipped to the back of my shoe). Garmin said 26°C and Strava said 27°C.

My kit made sploshing sounds as it hit the floor tiles in the utility room. 🤣

I’m just. Girly Wuss when it comes to running in the heat! Although it was 28 on Tuesday when I ran 😊

I have filed the info about your kit sploshing on the floor to the same part of my brain that holds the info about your toenail 😂

I've just been out for another barefoot two miler (actually 3.15km).

Shed thermometer (in the shade) said 26°C.

I used a safety pin to attach the thermal sensor to my shorts and that read 27°C-28°C.

I'm currently melting.

Yup! I can believe it. My 28 degree run on Tuesday with the running club barely raised a sweat! Well, maybe a few drops 🤣 But it was a bit of a cheat - I did a week 7 run with the Couch to 5K group. An extremely slow 25 minutes, only covered 2.4K and that was nearly all in the shade. It was enough! It was that, or cancel it. I don’t have a sensor, I just go by what it says on Strava, which may or may not be accurate.

We’re heading into Autumn fast so running will get easier as the temperatures drop 😊

Good run Jools and I agree - felt much warmer than 18 this morning - I started at 6.40am myself today. Having spent August doing just 3k each time just to get in the swing of it again, I moved to 4K today and felt reasonably OK so will do same for another week or so before attempting 5k again.

Shame about your coffee but at least you saved some money 😉

What is it use to measure ‘zones’ please ?

Jools2020 profile image
Jools2020Graduate10 in reply to61Lady

I have the heartrate zones set up to show on my watch, although I think the info also shows on Strava if you pay to subscribe.

On my watch it shows as a number. So 3.5 would be halfway between Zone 3 and Zone 4. It’s helpful to me as I like to do low heart rate runs.

Thanks Jools- Appeals to me too Sorry to be a pain but which watch do have ?

Jools2020 profile image

You’re not being a pain at all! It’s a Garmin Vivoactive 3, which is quite an old model - although it does do most of what I want 😊

I’ve got a Garmin too so I’m going to checkout if it has that feature - thanks again

It did take me ages to sort it out! You can also set it as a percentage of HR maximum, or you can swipe up to see a dial with the zones as different colours. I did set that up, but found it a bit of a faff to have to swipe up to see the zones.

Oh goodness- what a mess I’ve made of this - I can set it but then can’t see it 🤣 must look at manual again

You might have to edit the fields on your watch face so it shows there

Jools, your post just made me smile because it’s a comfort to know that someone was struggling along yesterday at the exact same time with me, even for a very similar distance.

I came back home looking like a glazed doughnut. If I’d have fallen, I would not have been able to get up as sweaty/slippery as I was 🤣

But well done us!

We are virtual running buddies! I do think I’m getting used to running in the heat. I’ve had to - otherwise lately I wouldn’t have been running at all, and I HAVE to run! It’s my medicine 😊

Yes, I thought I felt rain on my neck for a moment 😂.

I took a selfie after the run, but it showed actual sweat on my t/shirt and that is not the image of me that I want to portray 🤣

Well done us, indeed!

Good to know there's hope because I do think I will never get used to it. Did a fartlek run this morning and thought I'm dying :-D

I tell myself that as runners, we should run in all weather conditions! I’ll still run in the heat - like you - but I won’t run as far. I was going to say ‘or as fast’ but I’m really slow anyway 😂 so I’ll just slow down a bit more!

Very inconsiderate of them not being open😎, us runners need our coffee or tea fix after a run, so glad you are pleased with your run, keep winning at life 😀

I suspect it's the humidity, I had to take it very slowly yesterday evening too & was sticky & sweating before long.

I thought it was going to rain, as I could smell it in the air before my run...nope clear skies so I assume I could literally smell the humidity (or the heat got to me) 😆👍
