I’m in love with my hill!

Ok, I disclose right here: I am in love!

This must be a thing that only happens to runners, right?

I’m starting to have, what one could call a relationship with the new hill I found last week. (Yes, it must have hidden between the Cheshire, flat sofa cushions nowster 🤣)

I’ve already mapped out different routes that explore this hill from both directions, routes that watch this hill from my only other hill in the area, and routes that add both hills into the mix, with different combinations up to 5k, incorporating both hills!

This morning, it was a loyal, one hill run only. I’m in (hilly) love!

So has anyone else fallen for any hill-temptresses in their area?

That’s a very beautiful airy hill and definitely worth falling in love with!

Yes, I have a favourite, or rather two favourites, and I had an assignation with them both yesterday.. I’ve been looking forward to seeing them for weeks.. 8 weeks in fact since the last time I was there, and absence definitely made the heart grow fonder! Technically, in fact it’s a valley.. so two hills, down one side and up the other, and I haven’t decided which is my favourite, or which way round I prefer to approach them, but it was lovely to see them both, and to be fit enough to walk down one, enjoy the peace in the valley bottom, and then walk up the other without having to stop for breath in spite of weeks of relative inactivity. Definitely hills to love 😊

That sounds wonderful!

🍏 Psychologically this is brilliant!! In the C25K program Jo Whiley started the mantra “ I love running” to counteract her past hate of running..

so “I love hills” can counteract I hate hills, I am scared of hills, hills are tiring etc etc

I have choices where I run at the coast. There are hills in suburbia, steep inclines & cliff paths, or level beside the sea , or combinations. I have different routes that incorporate them all. My choice is dependent on which NRC run is coming up & the length of time it involves!

Loved this post!!

Awwwh thank you! Yes, I often find that I’ve chosen the wrong route for an NRC run, or chosen the wrong NRC run for the route.

This morning I did a guided run by another provider (more in a next post, when I’ve tried it a second time). But specific running drills were hampered by the hilliness, so it felt like I couldn’t give the instructions my best efforts!

Aaaah, competing running partners: hills vs audio-guided runs! But when they all work together … gold!

Oooh - love the Whiley idea. I may need a bit of a C25K re-intro soon ...

Er no! In fact, I usually try to avoid hills!

I know that it is great training and I ought to think about incorporating some hills …. But so far I haven’t made the plunge!

🤣🤣🤣

Well, if you ever want to try it, there is a brilliant little NRC audio-guided hill run called RUNNER UP (21 min), which is a very fun introduction to a hill workout.

And one does not to have to choose a really steep hill. When first searching for a steep enough hill, it was my hubby who pointed out that the sloping farm track at the beginning of my C25k route was sufficient for a training session like that.

I loved your post, it really inspired me to do some hill running again. Prior to doing the Yorkshire 3Peaks in May, I'd anything to avoid running up hills, but I soon realized that they are absolutely essential for building stamina which sadly at the moment I am lacking. I'm certainly going to look up the NRC run, thanks for that reminder!

I love hills and we have very steep ones but I mostly run on the seafront or river, then every so often take myself over the Downs.

Love your photos of your hills, 😊

😊 yeah, a perfect gentle beauty that, together with my trusty first hill, gives me 4 different medium gradients of 5%, 6%, 7% and 8% depending on which direction you run.

We do have a KILLER MILE 🏴‍☠️in our vicinity, with official races up the 25% gradient 😱. But it never spoke to me, although it attracts many runners every year ( mowcop.info/killermile/kill... )

😅😂

I can't avoid hills in my area. I live on the side of one.

The flattest route I could find running locally during lockdown when doing C25K was a 40m climb spread over about 2km. It's now the "home straight" of my longer runs.

Ah, hill love @CBDB - it’s a funny thing!

A couple of years ago I used a local one for hill repeats and grew to love the challenge of running up and down it. 🏃‍♀️💪 Sadly a far less fit me, slogged up it a few weeks back with heavy legs and within a few days developed the injury that is stopping me from running now!! 😬😠So for me - at the moment - it is very much ‘love-hate’! Unfinished business though…I will be back!

Oh no! Yeah, that would result in a (at least temporary) breakup!

Sending you lots of healing wishes!

I run hills all the time and have done since I started C25K. No choice if I want to run from home, as we live part-way up a hill in a generally hilly area. Even when I'm on holiday somewhere I'd rather seek out inclines and hills if there are any; I have no idea how to cope with flat, straight roads.

CBDB profile image
CBDBGraduate10 in reply toCmoi

🤣🤣🤣 flat routes … it’s a challenge 🤣🤣

Cmoi profile image
CmoiGraduate10 in reply toCBDB

It genuinely is. I find flat, even terrain monotonous and boring, and I've no idea how to pace myself on it. Where I live it's all up and down, so my pace often varies considerably during a run. The idea of having to run at a consistent pace throughout completely freaks me!

I love your post but sadly don’t share your sentiment 🤣, at least for running up them. Now running down, that is another story. I just love it when someone says ‘it’s all downhill from here’.

I just laughed so hard that I started coughing (I’m at the tail end of a cold that started at the beginning of July ☹️)

My friend and I labelled one of the local hills our nemesis, so it’s nice to know some of them are getting some love.

Nothing even approaching that around here. Was going to start running further afield but didn't quite get to that. Not sure I'd relish it so much though!

Who knows. They might just sneak up on you, and one day you turn a corner and 😱😱😱 there it is … 🗻⛰️🌄🏞️

Yep, we live in a lumpy area, so not a lot of choice. I managed C25K a few years ago by selecting nearly flat areas, and downhills. The problem with downhills, is that you need to get back to the start again. 😂.

We’ve got a local run that I’ve only just got fit enough to (nearly) run - there’s a 200m section that’s still beating me. The first half (about 6k) has about 200m elevation gain, the last half I like 😂

CBDB profile image
CBDBGraduate10 in reply toReggit

🤣 👍🏽 (last half? Is it an out and back, or just an up and down? 😉)

Reggit profile image

Circular - up to the top and back of a different road.
