I started out this morning to try a 8k again, having failed this week, achieving 7k 2 days ago.
And not sure if I didn’t have enough recovery, or if I’m coming down with something, or was it true what I suspected and I took the wrong plate accidentally with a normal gluten toast yesterday (I’ve been gluten free since 4 years), but I quickly realised my legs felt like jelly from the start.
I managed a bit more than 2k and turned back. But every run is a run, and having been out there in gorgeous weather and surroundings, one cannot be too unhappy.
Even DNF (did not finish) short runs can be beautiful and rewarding !

Some days those long runs are just not meant to be! I had a similar experience last week, when I set out to run 5k but knew it was all wrong after 1k and finished at 2k. Like you, I took the positive from it- it was 2k more than if I’d stayed in bed and I got some fresh air.
It looks lovely where you run, so rewarding in many ways even for shorter runs. 😊 Happy running!
2 km is better than none and a lovely day to go with it. At least u knew what probably caused it. I tried a bit of Mr D satay sauce just a tiny bit and sore stomach hit fairly quick , but it was my own fault for trying, I should know better.
I agree with Instructor57: This was a DTF (did, too, finish!) 🤣 You did finish the 2K run, didn't you? Now, if you're still sitting on that beautiful trail enjoying the sun, I'd say it is a DNF...
(Given that I am absolutely sun-deprived right now because forecasts have been predicting sunshine - and we got grey skies instead - I could imagine myself doing that... It's almost like I am back in San Francisco in the summertime...)
😬 you used the F word! We don’t do failures here 😂. I think that there is a bit of a trap there. Trying to “wipe out” a run which didn’t match your aims by attempting the same distance a couple of days later is tempting, but not something I would do now (we have all been there I expect). Fitting in a couple of shorter runs before trying to increase the distance again might help.
yeah. That’s my plan! As I’m pushing towards 10k on a plan, it feels like I need to tick that distance off. But will give it a week before trying again. 😊😃👍🏽
Thanks for posting this. My run didn't go as planned either (and I only planned 2k!). My plan was to leave my car at my Mum's and run round round the meadows by the Derwent... but very surprisingly for her there was a chink of interest in coming out for a walk. I had a cunning plan which involved her having a rest on a stone bench... but I had reckoned without dementia. Instead of walking the 100m to the bench she must have immediately turned back. I saw her and gestured until she seemed to have got it... but then she detoured... more waving. But she was very quickly nowhere to be seen, so I was running and walking all over the place to try to find her. Eventually I tried phoning her house (which she doesn't always answer... but this time... she'd obviously just gone straight home and at quite a lick, and was even complaining about the meadow being difficult underfoot... well yes, if you go off the path...)
But you are so right... I got my Mum aired and in the sunshine (and she hadn't fallen in the river or a ditch), I got my time in a running spot I have missed, and I got a run in.
How was that run a DNF? Don’t talk yourself into a DNF when there’s no need for that. You ran. You finished the run at a point of your choosing. That’s a good thing to have done.
I often start long runs not quite sure if I’ll cover the full distance. Back when I was doing the magic plan, that really helped me mentally so I didn’t have to think “9k to go”!! It’s good to check in with yourself and see if the the right thing is to carry on or stop. Most of the time, I do keep going but it’s not a failure to actively and sensibly choose to cut short.
CB says something along the line of love the run you’re in…don’t worry about all the other ‘what ifs’ and ‘I should haves’…
…and defo no need to use that F word…you got out the door, you crossed the starting line, you ran, and you crossed the finishing line of your choosing. It may have not been the one on your original plan…but hey! You’re a winner…’cause you sure as heck ain’t slouching on the couch!
Another vote for avoiding the f word! Maybe you didn't get to 8km today but you're a step closer to it.
When you get the jelly legs the only thing you can do is rest, drink tea (or beverage of choice) and consume self indulgent snacks to build up your strength.
A similar thing happened to me on Wednesday. I've not been running for over a week due to a bit of a bug but we went for a walk, which turned out to be 6km. I'll normally walk a km and run 5km before breakfast and not miss a beat but a few hundred metres from the boat (where we were staying) on the way home I went all weak and woozy and had to sit down. A bit alarming but probably just my body telling me to stop demanding quite so much from it! I've not exactly been taking it easy since, but have definitely been pacing myself.
Hope that you don't come down with something, there's a lot going round at the minute. Might have to start wearing a mask again!
Actually, not running isn't necessarily a failure Freecloud . Sometimes, if you are injured or ill, it's better not to run. Not running can be simply a deferral of future successes, whilst running in the same circumstances would be working against future runs.
I completely agree. I was just playing with words and working it with something coach Bennett from Nike app might say. Sometimes it doesn't get picked up that way I guess.
Ha-ha! Up until about 2 years ago I said runners were crazy and couldn't understand the attraction. Why would they destroy their bodies by running. BORING!. Then through weight loss and looking for new ventures I found c25k, this fantastic forum and all the wonderful people here with a common cause. Spread and share the joy of running, help and encourage all that want to try the same! This is my threapy....
Well done for running at all if you were glutened 😬 I wouldn’t have been able to put one foot in front of the other. Hope you don’t feel too unwell. The place looks lovely and the weather was beautiful so that’s a positive, and a run is a run 🏃♀️
