I hadn’t run since Saturday morning as I’ve been so busy sanding, painting and generally decorating. And been far too tired to even walk anywhere!! Just been showering when I finished and flopping in a heap until early bedtime. But I finished finally yesterday and it’s all looking lovely and the equipment is tidied away and ready for my guests in October so I thought I’d venture out this morning.
I’d checked the weather forecast last night and it looked like 7-8 was my best bet so I set my alarm for 7.00am, set out my running stuff and went to bed . Woke up with the alarm, ignored it and finally got up and out the door at 745 🙄. Did my 5 minute warm up walk, pressed my watch and off I went. I was listening to Run to the Beat Podcast, which I usually find motivating and very up beat but I really struggled with my breathing this morning. Haven’t had that since my bouts of Covid but I have felt rubbish since my booster, and worn myself out decorating, and wondered if maybe it was all the paint fumes aggravating it?? I do paint with windows open and I’d had 2 good blasts of my Turboinhaler this morning too. But it almost hurt in my lungs whilst breathing, sort of achey. Not nice at all.
I wasn’t expecting much this morning but I thought I’ll do the old 4 X 10 mins 5k for sure. Nope!!! Didn’t even get through the toxic 10!! Ran for 5.5 mins then had to walk for a minute, then I managed 6.5 mins before I had to walk again, then another 5 before I had to walk again and then less than 2 minutes and I had to walk again!!! One more burst of 2 and a half mins and I press the End button and walked home. Chest hurts, legs are tired. Think I maybe should have had a complete day of rest before I tried running. Don’t like the chest pain though. But it did stay dry while I was out, just got caught in a shower and walking home when it doesn’t really matter.
So ended up run/ walking for about 30 mins and just over 3.5k. So annoyed , that after I’d showered and had breakfast I went for a nice long walk to make up for it. NOW I am going to sit in a heap with my Kindle, a cuppa and at least one cat.

That sounds like a tough run and I wonder if you’re right about maybe needing a bit more rest time. You still did lots of minutes though if you add them all up and that’s something to be proud of. 21.5 minutes is a good run! To quote Coach B from NRC (which I do often!), “when you can’t run the run you want to, run the run you can do.” That was what you had in you today and that’s something to celebrate.
Maybe you might want to take a few days to make sure you’re fully recovered? If you’ve got new chest pain, it’s probably worth a chat with a medics person about to make sure all’s well there.
I should have said, 4 x 10 minutes on a day when you’re not expecting much sounds like a lot to me! I’ve been training for a HM and one of my runs every week is just 15minutes and all at conversational pace. That’s still a good run. It might be worth challenging what you think counts as a proper run. It doesn’t need to be anything like as long as 40 minutes!
oh!! Thats always my “ Basic run”. I usually do 5k as a run 3 times a week and try to do a 10k at least once a month. Sometimes I manage to run the 5k as a whole run but I drop back to 4 x10 mins if I’m not sure how good I’m feeling.
Trouble is I forget that I’m 4 years older than when I started running ( 69 now) and for the first two years once I’d got the hang of continuous running thats all I ever did. Even so far as running continuously for 3 hrs 20 mins for my first HM. Then I had a couple bouts of Covid and had to restart C25k and now I find I need to walk more often than I used to. Unfortunately I always feel like I’m sort of cheating if I have to walk now.
Change it up! Try some shorter runs. It’s much nicer to get to the end of a 10/15/20 minute run and decide to extend it rather than cutting a planned longer run short. You absolutely don’t have to run for 40 minutes/5k every time you’re out for a run. It’s worth experimenting. Who knows-you might love the shorter ones. I’m usually in a great mood after my 15 minute run. The next scheduled one I’ve got coming is 22 minutes, so basically what you did today.
Do you use any tech? Nike run club has lots of short guided runs. They’re usually good.
There’s also absolutely nothing wrong with walking. Don’t knock yourself down. Really hope you’re feeling better soon. ❤️
Oh what a shame it wasn’t enjoyable, when did you have your covid booster? all my vaccines left me feeling awful for ages, next run will be better for sure
I had my booster on Sept 16th so I thought I’d be feeling better by now. Didn’t have any issues with the last 2 and the first one I just had a 24 hour headache. Maybe I’ve just overdone things lately. I was just excited to get my decorating done ready for my grandson’s visit from Oz next month 😁 and couldn’t wait till I felt 100%.
yes he emigrated with his mum when he was 4 and he’d spent so much time with us before that. Miss him so much. We’ve been over once and he came over on escorted flights 3 times but we have had to content ourselves with FaceTime in between. He is 18 in December and he is bringing his girlfriend with him this time. Cant wait!!
