Well we waited a long time for the weather to break down on the south coast, but I think we may have overdone it with our rain dancing. On Saturday, the heavens opened as I ran parkrun in T-shirt and shorts. I didn’t think I’d say this, but I loved running in the rain; it was almost tropical. I was absolutely soaked to the skin, but because it was warm and not windy it felt great. Thankfully, I was not out running in the amazing thunderstorms we’ve had practically every day since.
I’ve managed my 3 runs over the week, and continued my training for the New Forest 10k to be held this weekend. First was NRC Funky Fartleks (which I can highly recommend), then parkrun, and then a gentle 5k with 4 sections of 400m of race speed. I am now on taper week so my next runs will be short and easy, to conserve energy, and just keep the legs oiled. I missed my Pilates lesson in a bid to run before a another thunderstorm arrived, but I had a good strength and flex session at home afterwards to make up for it.
So how have your quests been going? You set some great targets last week and, in case you’ve forgotten, here is the link:
Morning Dexy 👋 You have no idea how envious I was when I read about your soaking during PR this week. Meanwhile I was wading through hilly humidity. 🥵
All good with my Quest. Yoga is back, not every day but whenever I can, and my running is going well too. However I had more than my fair share of tech issues at the gym last time, including the treadmill freezing and me having to leap off with the belt running (😱), my headphones conking out and my watch and phone batteries scarily low! Still ran (on a different treadmill!) and still enjoyed it of course. 🙏🏻
Glad to hear that you are getting back in to YWA Cheeky. It’s definitely a case of getting into the habit again.
Your treadmill experience sounds scary. They have become so hi tech now, so there’s even more things to go wrong. Watches and headphones just have a mind of their own sometimes! I had to remove the Garmin connect app and reinstall it a few times last week as it just froze.
Good luck with the New Forest 10K. My event for the weekend is the Wirksworth Festival (small town opens up homes and other venues for artists to exhibit in and the place is inundated with visitors), supporting my son with his show so it will be my smiling and saying hello muscles exercised.
My Quest is going pretty well I'd say and boosted by the arrival of lovely medals for elements of last month's Quest.
The 'exercise every day' is working out again, perhaps a little easier so far than last month, but again, including yoga in that really helps. One of my walks was round IKEA!
Lovely Derwent-side run, beautiful weather but the rain had made the surface a bit more forgiving (and the river an unappealing brown), just a wee notch towards the total goal.
Lurch upwards in the weight for a while. Fortunately temporary but which really reinforces why I need to get the baseline down.
The Arts Festival sounds great GoogleMe , and all the better to be supporting your son., and it’s always good to give different muscles some exercise. 😂
I’ve often wondered how far you walk following the arrows around IKEA. It’s a bit infuriating when you only want to buy something in the last department .
A Derwent-side run sounds delightful - I so love that area. Hopefully the bloom will disappear from Windemere now that it’s cooled down a bit. We suffer the same problem in our local canoe lake .
Different Derwent I think. (We could do with a bit more river name originality in these isles - I was running by the confluence of the Derwent and the Wye and there's both in other parties of the country!) Lovely bit of woodland, all the better for once having been railway sidings!
You will love that Forest 10K..... we are currently having the first rain here in Criccieth for days and days.... ! No thunder as yet... Your Park run sounds amazing!
Well... Quest wise... I have managed two runs so far this week... after my 5K last week.. I got in a 2.2K Sunday, and... another 3K on Tuesday...both NRC guided runs... slow pace and strength building.
I am not overthinking too much now, just going with the flow and being kind to myself. I would like to get a 5K in tomorrow...but we will see what the morning brings weather wise.
My weight is creeping up a tad as my trousers which I keep here at the van are feeling a little snugger! I am pleased about that as it means I am not pushing too hard.
Thanks, It looks like the weather will be nice on Sunday which all I can hope for. I may take road shoes and trails and make the decision there after all these heavy downpours.
Well done on your runs Oldfloss , going with flow is definitely the way to go as you build up your strength. The weight increase is a good sign too.
Good luck to you Dexy in your 10k event at the New Forest this weekend. Have fun, that sounds like a pretty nice place to run in.
My quest is going well, I have run twice last week, both NRC guided runs. One with Coach Cory and one with Coach Bennet. The second one was a trail run by the river which was really fun.
I have practiced yoga every day, and been on a few nice walks totaling 18k so far.
Hoping my next run will be Thursday afternoon and then one at the weekend.
Yes I enjoyed her yoga every day in January . I sometimes have to pause her as I take longer to move from one position to another . I put it down to out of practice rather than age.😂
You’ve had a great week Dexy5 by the sounds of it, mine has been spent mostly on the couch being unwell, but I’m better now and back out for a 25 minute run where I covered 2.74k which i was pleased with,
For this next week I aim to run twice as it’s my busy week at work and I’m not off again til next Tuesday
Lol yes, Hampshire’s heavens have certainly opened haven’t they Dexy5 ! My umbrella got quite the shock it was in back in use 😁.
Quest wise, my first run of the week will be tomorrow as my legs have needed a bit of a rest, then off to Paris on Friday to do a 10k there on Sunday. I nearly bought a beret in Primark to wear but figured it might be quite warm 🤣. They’ll be having a 2 day run up to the event so perhaps I can treat myself to something fun to wear when I get there, I’m sure there’ll be all sorts on sale.
Have fun at the NF 10k! My colleague saw a lady sunbathing there fast asleep. She woke up to find a nosy pony’s face inches from hers which scared the life out of her by all accounts. So watch out if you feel the urge for a snooze on the way round 😁.
How exciting to run 10K in Paris. I look forward to reading your race post on that one. Right choice on the beret! Yes you might be able to buy some running gear which is a bit different and very oh lah lah. Have fun.
Ha Ha, I don't think I'll be snoozing Frenc (although it is an early journey), but last time I did it, the Marathon runners must have scared the ponies elsewhere and they stampeded across our 10K route. I lost some vital seconds waiting for them to pass.
We carried our jackets around today so that it wouldn't rain while we were out. it worked.
A marathon stampede! That I would have liked to have seen 😁, and the old jacket trick always works a treat. Just you wait, I bet I buy something ridiculously expensive and totally unnecessary, never to see the light of day again 😁.
I can’t believe we’re a week in already. Good luck for your race at the weekend. Sounds like you’re well prepared. Our weather didn’t break until late yesterday afternoon, but, boy, did it rain. Torrential 💦💦💦
My week was going well with all HM training runs completed until it got to sprint repeats on Sunday, when, during the first 4 minute interval, I felt a pull in my left thigh and had to pull up. I abandoned the rest of the 4 minute intervals, did the 5 x 30 second fast (5.20 pace) intervals, then limped home for voltarol and foam roller. Feeling a bit better, but still struggling with faster pace ☹️On the plus side, dry September is going well and I have lost another 2lbs in the last week (8 in the last month) 😃😃
That rain! It was so torrential that our gutters on the house couldn’t take the volume of water!
Oh no Sandie1961 , this is not the time to get an injury with all your races coming up. You have my permission to adapt those speed runs to suit you and how you feel. As Oldfloss says, listen to your body.
Well done on the dry month so far - there’s no doubt that the vin blanc adds the calories.
Thank you 😊 I managed to get an injury 4 weeks before my only other HM but was ok on the day so 🤞 Can’t wait to get back to shorter distances. Give me 10k any day!
I remember last year deliberately going out when I could see a storm coming, it was madness but an amazing experience to run out in it. I did adjust my route to avoid hills 😂
Up here in Yorkshire we have had a bit of rain but not much and most days have still been very warm .
I've done my usual 2 runs during the week, dipping my toes into my first ever parkrun on Saturday. My Pilates has slipped a bit but I've maintained my physio exercises and yoga practice.
I've also been getting my daily running inspiration from the forum which was a habit that I wanted to get back in to.
Things are on pause at the moment as I've got a lower tummy bug that seems to be lingering. I'm slowly getting over it, but I don't expect to be running again before the weekend.
Well done on your magic plan week done 61Lady , I am sure you’ll do brilliantly. It’s certainly worked for me in the past. I do hope you get your 6k done before the next storm ☔️.
hello Dexy5 and fellow questers. Good luck with your 10k in the new forest this weekend and well done on getting your runs in. thanks for keeping us all accountable. My quests in week one have gone well.
1) Yes - continue to run 3 times a week - did exactly that
2) Yes - continue with garmin coach HM training plan for event in November
3) Almost - do at least two cross training sessions a week- one should be strength. Didn’t manage to fit a strength session in but did do 3 swims
4) on track- aiming to run one parkrun by end of the month
5) Yes - have at least one rest day a week - had two
6) on track- take part in running World Cup in cbdb’s HU team 2022
Fingers crossed I can keep this up for week 2. Wish me luck:)😀
You have done so well in the first week that I don’t think you need any luck from me Jogger22 ! It sounds like you are in the right track for your November event.
Which parkrun will you be aiming for? I did a post about parkrun for first timers a year or so and will track down a link for you.
My running routine seems to be getting back to normal although my long weekend run didnt happen, mainly due to a lack of sleep.
I'm hoping the swim sessions at the pool will be less busy now the schools are back and I did manage 2 swims last week.
Finding time for the back and shoulder exercises seems more difficult so I've been prioritising the shoulder. The back has been a bit less niggly but I expect that's more to do with not commuting with a heavy backpack last week and several back to back shortened working weeks. Lets see how it is this week...
My quest was to recover and to run a bit. It’s been a decent week here. My shoulder is miles better and I managed a few runs. There was a thirty five minute recovery run that we won’t talk about. Never warmed up. Awful all the way. Glad it ended. A speed run (one hard, one easy on the NRC)-short and dirty. Loved it. The fifteen minute intro to the week run which was uneventful and I decided I wasn’t quite ready for an 8k tempo run or another ten miler so picked a random thirty minute recovery run. That was a great choice.
This week I need to research gels and headphones. I’m getting some Shokz for my birthday so I need to decide what level of expense is worth spending. It’s likely I’ll use some gels on the half marathon so id like to experiment first. Both things are totally new for me so any tips are welcome!
I’m glad to hear that your shoulder is improving MissU, and you were able to get some runs in. Picking a guided run to suit your mood is a great idea.
If you post a question on gels and nutrition on the marathon forum you will gain a wealth of advice from the distance runners. My OH uses tailwind which you mix with water on longer runs as he doesn’t like eating while running.
A separate post on aftershokz would also be useful. Bone conduction earphones are great as you can still hear other things, like bikes coming up behind you. Some races only allow this type of headphone for this reason. I have the basic openmove model and love them. It’s just a case of remembering how to use the buttons to give the commands while running. I like the way you can make a phone call while running without getting your phone out of your pocket. I even use them to enjoy music when gardening 🧑🌾
Hi Dexy5 , thanks for the Quest. It's getting so much easier now that it's cooler and wetter, isn't it?
My Quest is going OK so far. I've managed 3 runs within the week. NRC actually credited me with 4 - the app wouldn't switch off so I've logged a 48 hour run with a cadence of 1 step per minute. They've even given me a badge for the longest run ever 😂 technology is a wonderful thing! I can't quite bring myself to delete it, I look at it and kid myself I'm some sort of Iron Woman Ultramarathon sort of thing. As if!
I didn't do Parkrun last weekend but I've got lots of time to get that done this month.
I still don't know if I'm going away so haven't looked into the 10k yet. While it was hot it seemed like an impossible dream to run that far, but this morning was much cooler and I really think I could have gone miles further if I wasn't doing an interval run. This will all be looked at later in the month. In the meantime onwards and upwards!
Well done for getting your 3 runs in Yesletsgo , even if NRC thinks you’ve done 4. Tech can certainly give a false illusion . A friend of mine was given an incorrect parkrun time once and she’ll never be able to reach her new PB. 😂
Yes this cooler weather is most welcome for running. Cool and dry would be nice at the moment as we have had torrential showers every day this week.
