Many thanks to SueAppleRun who hosted the quest so well during August, in addition to doing a very busy job in a care home.  They do say if you want anything doing, ask a busy person!

September has now arrived and you have got me to keep an eye on things this month!  I don’t know what you’ve done to deserve that, but I am honoured to be here once again.

I must admit that I love September.  When children go back to school it’s a bit quieter for the rest of us for running along the seafront.  The temperature is cooler, and running race season starts all over again.  I’ve signed up for one race so far, 10k running in the beautiful New Forest.  I’m so excited to get back there again after a long break due to the pandemic.  There will also be a Marathon, Half Marathon, 5k and a family walk, but 10k is a good distance for me - not too much intensive training required!  There is always a festival atmosphere with bands playing afterwards, and lots of food and drink stalls.  Just perfect.

What is the Quest ?

The aim of the Quest is to help you find a focus or goal that you would like to achieve by the end of the Quest period.

The Quest takes one calendar month. You can join at any point during that time.

Some popular goals are:

★ To run three times a week

★ To slowly increase distance

★ To train for a specific race

★ To add Stretch and Strength exercises to your weekly routine

This is a personal challenge, so it's completely up to you! If you want to join, all you have to do is COMMENT BELOW with something like:

I would like to join the Quest, or, count me in! I want to ..............

Every week I will put up a new post and we can all chat about how we are doing.

So my quest in September is:

🔅 Run 3 times a week.

🔅 Prepare for 10k race.

🔅 Attend weekly pilates classes.

🔅 Volunteer or run at parkrun each  week and do at least one tourist run.

So have a think about what you want to do this month, then add your quest in the comments below and we will all cheer you on 😊.

I would also love to hear from anyone who is currently unable to run for whatever reason.  I know some of my VRBs are on the couch for non running related medical reasons, following the loss of a loved one, or are undertaking physio treatment.  My heart goes out to you all.  How are you occupying yourself? What goals have you got? What are you doing to stay fit while you aren’t running?

I will be posting once a week during September and hope to see some new names as well as some familiar ones.

Whoop Whoop! so happy it’s you this month Dexy 😀Count me in…… this month I’m going off plan a bit and intend to run a few 5k runs, it used to be my happy distance and I’ve lost that this year so am going to practice until I find it comfortable again

The New Forest really is a beautiful place, I’ll look forward to read your running report there

Yes you can relax again now W&S!

Going for 5k runs is a great idea, it’s a lovely distance. Perhaps go back to the rest day between your runs while you are increasing your distance again, and do a walk on your rest days. I’m sure Willow would enjoy too.

Only 10 days until the New Forest now.

Wonderful! I have just made a 5K run each week one of my goals too! Good luck with your goals!x

Hello! How lovely to see you here hosting the Quest . Willow and Sola did a super job and kept me on track... now it's your turn to do the same. !

I am going to be brave this month... and make my Quest goal a little more challenging ( for me) !

I am going to up my game and for trying to run at least twice a week, and one of those will be a 5K distance! Whoa..... now I said it.

My weight is almost back up to 8 stone... my muscle tone is improving and I think I should be okay. It won't be fast ( don't be silly), but what I lack in speed, I shall make up for in style... (mainly my incredibly sassy leggings) !

You need, please, to chase me if I don't appear each week,.

Happy safe questing everyone!

Dexy5 profile image
Dexy5Graduate10 in reply toOldfloss

I will definitely be chasing you Oldfloss , and you will be easy to find in those snazzy leggings. Once the temperature goes down I’ll be in mine too. I’m still in shorts here.

2 runs including a weekly 5k is a great quest, and you can always log it as a (not) parkrun.

Hi Dexy, thank you for leading the Quest this month, keeping us on track.

After a long period of sporadic running or simply not having the time to run at all, I have decided to make a real effort to squeeze running regularly back into my routine. Please may I join the Quest to make myself accountable.

I want to run twice a week, I'm using the NRC guided runs to build up my time/distance again, and hope to earn my 5k Strava badge this month too. I have also joined CBDB and the HU team for the Running World Cup to add incentive.

The September Calender of Yoga with Adriene (YWA) is called Celebrate as it's 10 years this month since her free classes on YouTube began. I shall be joining her each day to keep strong and flexible to support my running.

I have joined the walking challenge on Strava so will be hoping to get a nice amount of walking done this month. Last month I did 103k so that is a target to better!

There...it's all set out, and no time like the present...today is a Run Day!

Wish me luck...

Good luck to you and fellow Questers as we head into Autumn..🍃🍂🍁xxx

How lovely to see you back on the Quest BBR.

It’s good to squeeze that bit of time that is just for you, and it sounds like there is a lot there to keep you occupied!

You will also be strong and supple after a month of YWA , and she is so calming.

See you next week.

Lovely to have you back hosting the Quest again Dexy. My aim is simple - complete my half marathon training plan, then complete my half marathon on 25th September 😬 I’m also aiming to lose half a stone, partly through 24 days of dry September just to be a bit more healthy on the big day!

Dexy5 profile image
Dexy5Graduate10 in reply toSandie1961

You have done well to keep up your training through the heat in France and at home Sandie and I have no doubt that you will have a great run on the 25th. The GSR in October will be a doddle after that.

I will be trying to lose a bit of weight along with you, and with the HM training and going dry you’ll smash that too.

I hope so. I did 17k yesterday morning, but it took me over 2 hours, which is some way away from my target ☹️

Hello Dexy5

Count me in please 😊

Following on from August's quest I think it will be much of the same:

- Keep on with the stretches & strengthening work

- Run 2 - 3 times a week - perhaps include a bit of speed work once a week to mix it up

- Avoid the IC

Hopefully all achievable.

Thank you for hosting and look forward to hearing all about your New Forest 10K

Dexy5 profile image
Dexy5Graduate10 in reply tobeth_f

Welcome beth_f , some great goals there, especially avoiding the IC.

I ran with Coach Bennett on NRC app this morning. Funky Fartleks. It was great fun, you didn’t know how fast you would be asked to run or for how long. I can highly recommend that.

Since I announced my return earlier this week I want to get stuck in again so will join September Quest if you’ll have me ?

I’ve started the Magic Plan (distance) so hope to complete week 4 or 5 by end of September.

More weight loss is my 2nd target. I’ve lost 4 stone 3lbs (over 2 years 🙄). Only another 2 stone to go says the Dr so I will try and make a dent in that too.

Happy questing everyone and thank you Dexy for keeping us all in line this month 🏃‍♀️🏃🏻‍♂️💪

Dexy5 profile image
Dexy5Graduate10 in reply to61Lady

We will definitely have you here on the Quest - It’s great to have you back on the forum again 61Lady

The magic plan is a great way to extend your running time. Just stick to slow and steady for those long runs and you’ll be fine.

Good luck with your weight loss, you have done well so far.

Hi Dexy, heat, travel and covid meant I did hardly anything in August so, having failed to meet my Quest targets the last few months I'm aiming low in September. So here are my goals:Run 3 times a week

Do at least one Parkrun

Assess whether it's realistic to do my local 10k. Pros: I've run 9k in the past, admittedly a few months ago so I'm sure the distance is feasible. Cons: lack of practice this last month means my last 2 runs have only been 3km so I'll have to get to 10k by 9th October. Also, we are thinking of going away yet again. We'll be back by mid October but our destination is very hilly so maybe not the best training for the 10k, plus it'll be very hot. As I say, I think the need is to do a realistic assessment later in the month. If we don't go away it's very likely we'll do it but otherwise...?

Dexy5 profile image
Dexy5Graduate10 in reply toYesletsgo

The hot weather slowed many of us down in August Yesletsgo , but to get Covid as well is tough. You may find you have to take it slowly until you find your old form again.

So listen to your body and I’m sure you’ll do great.

It sounds like you don’t have to commit to a 10km race straight away, so you can play that by ear as you progress, or go on another holiday 😂

cheekychipmunks profile image
cheekychipmunksGraduate10

Hi Dexy, great to see you hosting this month!

My Quest is to continue with what I’m doing running wise, but make more time for my yoga and strength training. I’m still being too sporadic for my liking and I think it’s really important that I keep yoga up especially. I swear it helps my running game (as Adriene calls it!) and helps keep me injury free. (I always touch wood after saying that!) 😀

Running really takes care of itself. I always make time for 3 or 4 runs per week, sometimes 5. It’s so ingrained in my life now! 🏃‍♀️🙏🏻

Dexy5 profile image
Dexy5Graduate10 in reply tocheekychipmunks

Yes, I’m flying solo this time cheekychipmunks !

Your running is going really well and you’ll love those races you’ve entered.

I received an email about Yoga with Adriene and her Celebration month so that should be a good incentive for you. I find that Pilates helps with running too but it’s so easy to get out of the habit. So now you’ve put it on here there’s no excuse. 🧘‍♀️

Great to have you hosting the Quest this month DexyI'm joining the Quest thus month after a promise to Bluebirdrunner

My aim is to get back into a regular routine- running 3 times a week and back on the NRC HM plan, swim at least twice a week, and knuckle down with the physio's recommended shoulder exercises and kick the niggly back into touch with the Pilates based core strengthening work.

The New Forest is a lovely part of the country and I'd love to run there. Good luck for your 10k - can't wait to hear all about it

Thanks Dexy5 for hosting the quests this month and keeping us all accountable. I wish you the very best of luck with yours. Your 10k event in the New Forest sounds like fun. I was down in that neck of the woods last September for my staycation and by stopped by Burley Village which was very pretty. I did the Moors Valley Country park run which is right next door and that was great fun😀. My quests this month are very similar to last month so:1) Continue to run 3 times a week

2) Continue with Garmin coach HM training plan for event in November

3) Do at least 2 cross training sessions a week - one should be strength. I'll be on holiday for a couple of weeks so should really be able to get more than 2 cross training sessions in a week but I'm thinking of the weeks I'm not on holiday

4) run one parkrun (I won't be near a parkrun for the other 3 saturdays) (aiming for my 50th milestone t shirt - still have a way to go yet)- undecided yet which one it will be. Don't know whether I should do a brand new one, my local one or some other.

5) Have at least 1 rest day each week which may or may not include swimming/ YWA etc

6) Take part in the Running World Cup Challenge which starts on 20th September. Have also signed up with CBDB's HU Team 2022. Wish us luck!

🤗

Hello Joggger22, September is a great time to be in the New Forest. Did you do Go Ape at West Moors? There’s also a parkrun there I have yet to try.

Some great targets for your Quest , and new running routes to find while you on your holiday. There is always an extra bag in the back of our car now - running gear. What did c25k do to us?

I’ll have to check out this running World Cup as there are a few of you doing it.

Having achieved my goals for the first time in ages in my August Quest, that maybe ups the pressure to set the right goals for September!

As Autumn arrives, I think there's scope to make some *downward weight progress* (I'll send it over to Oldfloss - I'll leave it on a Peak District trail for you somewhere shall I?)

Last month's medal induced *active every day* (which included yoga) was challenging but I'm going to see how that continues.

I've been a plonker and failed to cancel a yoga subscription in time, so I've paid for another three months. I may do some of their yoga classes under that overarching daily goal but otherwise I am going to focus on their restorative/breathing/meditation/relaxation offering, with a goal of *25+ guided sessions*

And finally, I've signed up for a beautiful butterfly medal which requires *a minimum of 25K*. I'd love this to be all running but that might be quite tight with what I've got on, so I might track some of my walks to add to that.

Dexy5 profile image
Dexy5Graduate10 in reply toGoogleMe

There’s nothing like a paid for subscription to encourage you to take part so you don’t waste your money, so enjoy those sessions.

There are a few of us wanting to shed a few lbs this month- if only we could pass them on to those who need it.

I love the sound of a butterfly medal, and you’ll be surprised at how those kms add up, especially if you add in a few walks on rest days. 🦋 🦋 🦋

See you next week

Hi DexyThanks for hosting this month's quest, it seems ridiculous that it's September already. Where has the year gone?

Back at the beginning of the year I set myself the goal of making 10k a normal distance for me to run, and to focus on this I entered a September run. I know I can run 10k as I have run 2 most months but I've never run with anyone else and not entered any type of run/race.

So my quest is simple ...

To run two 10ks , one of which will be the Bristol 10k 😱

And to get back into the habit of reading/replying on this forum. Although I post things I've got out of the habit of reading and responding. I'd never have kept running without it and I think some of my reluctance to get out during the summer was due to missing all the inspirational stuff on here.

Dexy5 profile image
Dexy5Graduate10 in reply todijep

Ooh dijep, I do love the atmosphere of a race, the butterflies beforehand, being part of something much bigger, and complete strangers chat to each other about a common theme - running. I hope you love it too.

Bristol 10k was my 1st race, and ran much of it with cheekychipmunks . It was a different route then though. I know cheeky is doing it again so you may bump into her.

The forum is inspiring, but sometimes real life outside running takes priority, so just dip in when you can.

Thanks for hosting! Last month’s quest was a total washout for me even though I ended on a bit of a high with a PB busting ten miler. This month I really need to work on running consistency again ready for my first HM in October. I’m currently on the IC with a pulled muscle in my neck taking a jumper off awkwardly last night (!!!). It’s a known weakness and I must have tweaked it. Hopefully that will only be a day or two.

My quest is: aim for four runs a week-two recovery, one speed and one long. The NRC plan has been excellent so far and I’m feeling very confident that I’ll make it round the distance. Now I’m focusing on making it as comfortable as possible with these last weeks of training.

The other key thing I’m trying to do is not get stressed about it. The training I’m doing is the right amount to fit in with life and it doesn’t matter if I’m sub-[insert time here] on the day. It’s sometime tricky to read about running without feeling like I should be doing a higher mileage every week/doing more strength work/doing whatever will make a faster time. One thing I really like about this forum is it’s chilled out in that respect.

Hopefully next week I can report back with a fully recovered neck and another ten mile run in the bag.

Dexy5 profile image
Dexy5Graduate10 in reply toMissUnderstanding

Very well done on your 10 miler MissU, that is such an achievement to be proud of, and perfect for your journey to HM.

Yes it is important that your running fits in with the rest of your life and sometimes training programmes need adapting . I am sure these little tweaks will make no difference to you running that race. We aren’t professional athletes, we are doing it for us . Go girl.

Hi, having had a great running month in August, surprisingly considering how I don’t like the very hot weather, I managed to run at least 3 times a week, cover 50 miles altogether with my runs, and another 100+ with my walks and do at least 2/ sometimes 3 hour long Pilates sessions a week AND lose a stone in weight too!!! Result!!!

However, I have also managed to aggravate my gluteus medius again!!! And am struggling to sleep as when I roll onto that side I get sciatica-like pain down that leg. So… THIS month I am going to concentrate on

1. keeping supple

2 doing more Strength sessions

3. Not always doing “ at least 5k “ for my runs

I did the C25k+ speed run last week and although it reminded me how slow I have become after 2 bouts of covid and other issues it also showed me I CAN go faster if I try. So

4. I am going to change my running from 3 x 5k runs a week and 2 10ks a month and try to do the Speed run once a week at least Instwad of one of the 5ks.

No 4 will be hard as I don’t feel like it’s worth getting my running gear sweaty unless I have run for at least 40 mins but we will see 🤞

Good luck to everyone else in the September Quest and also to all of you training for races this month ( not my cup of tea thankfully 😁)

Dexy5 profile image
Dexy5Graduate10 in reply tolimberlou

Hello limberlou, and welcome to The Quest.

Excellent targets to build up on what you’ve been achieving in August and well done on the weight loss.

I like to do a 4k run when I’m doing hill work or Fartleks, and 1km of that is a slow warm up run.

A 3 hour pilates session? I must say 1 hour of pilates is enough for me! So well done you.

limberlou profile image
limberlouGraduate10 in reply toDexy5

Haha no I mean 3 x 1 hour long Pilates sessions. Blimey I think 3 hours would kill me I have done 2 back to back before but the 2nd one was a gentle one 😂

hi enjoy the run this weekend, my son and his family will be there too, he's doing the 10k while his wife and 7 yr old daughter do the 5k. My goal is to make progress on the bridge, to volunteer on Parkrun, and to perhaps do a new Parkrun route. So I will volunteer on my local Parkrun this weekend, today I ran for 60 minutes for the first time! There was absolutely no doubt the seasons have changed today!
