Early morning 5K to beat the heat πŸƒπŸŒž

With the forecast for temperatures in the high 20's today I decided on an early start.

Out of the door around 05:40

Wearing thin shorts and a running vest , even then i could tell it would be warm .

On my warm-up walk I spotted the Peacock in the picture !

It was just perched on a garden gate as I walked down the road , as I got closer to take a picture it flew up off the gate onto the garage roof .

Not something you see all the time on your warm-up walk !

It has been seen around the area now for some time .

On one occasion I spotted it in my back garden sharing lunch with my chickens 🀣

Warm-up finished, watch and music started .

Today's music was Pink Floyd 'Animals'

I have been following the NRC HM plan now for several weeks , however over the last couple of weeks I have had a few issues, I have followed the plan except for the last 2 long runs now as I have not felt ready for them and I have been keeping an eye on a back issue .

So today was off plan !

It was just a steady run to see how my back held up .

Started nice and slow as I was concerned about my back but all was ok .

I soon started to warm up , within the first half K I was quite warm and the sun was coming up .

I'm on my usual 5k route so i know exactly where each km ends and it was looking like an average paced run .

By 3k I was in full sun and heading up the climb towards the church , it's not particularly steep but it a longish tiring incline , especially in full sun .

3.5k done and back in a little welcome shade .

My back is ok and my pace is around my average.

Another incline to go just before 4k then it varies untill the end of the run .

5k done and definitely sweating now !

A 3 or 4 minute cool down walk back home , and done and dusted and back in the house all by 06:30 .

I have a day off today so will just have a lazy restful day .

I'm not one for being out in the mid-day sun !.

Right , stretches done , where's that porridge 😁

I too have been out already this morning, left home at 6:15 and felt really warm, took things slowly after warming up indoors. I’m pleased most of the uphill effort was at the beginning of the run! Running through the golf course and park provided some lovely cool shade, so picked up pace ever so slightly, finished off a nice 5k, after some stretches and breakfast it will be on with the day. Love these early morning runs

Very well done! 5k I these temperatures is more than impressive πŸ™Œ I was out before 7am with the dog and it was 20C, warm but nothing compared to what's coming - the forecast is 31-32C this afternoonπŸ”₯πŸ₯΅

Thanks ,and yes, I wouldn't have wanted to go any later πŸ₯΅

Yay 5:40! That’s brill 🀩. Def hotter than yesterday. Very pleased your back seems ok, but I could feel that sun of yours going up the hill just reading about it πŸ”†πŸ”†πŸ”†. Enjoy your day off, and what a day to be foot loose and fancy free, although I’m the same and tend to avoid the midday sun these days 😁.

Thanks Kate !I usually wake up at a similar time , make tea and take it back to bed , this time I just put my kit on instead 😁

Thanks Julia, that's the earliest I've done for some time now , it would be certainly too hot for me later πŸ₯΅

Well done on getting out there nice and early Ian πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘ Sorry that you've been having back troubles - I know how that feels! But good that it seems to be holding up ok now πŸ€—

Enjoy the rest of your day off and well done on your run. It’s a lot cooler here. 19 degrees and overcast. We were blessed with natural air conditioning here in Ireland. πŸ˜„

Thank you!It's now 24 so I'm glad I was out early .

Even your 19 would be too much for me to run (although I remember similar while doing C25K 2 years ago) πŸ™‚

I was out about 5 minutes after you for a 5K. And like you, found the temperature was warming up then. By the time I got back it felt more like the middle of the afternoon than early morning. I am glad I didn't wait until after the school run!!I hope you back improves, a nice lay out in the warm sun may help!

:) :) :)

Oh well done !And yes, I normally vwait until after the school run but definitely not today !

I think the sun may help my back but I prefer the shade these days 😁

I see your track (on Strava) is your classic rabbit. πŸ˜†

This morning was a nearly 10km walk for me, starting about 8.30am. It was very warm even by that point. At one point I'd stopped to take a photo (of a group of clover flowers) and shooed away a horsefly just about to have a nibble on my arm.

Instructor57 profile image
Instructor57Graduate10β€’ in reply tonowster

Yes, the usual rabbit run !And I noticed your long walk on Strava πŸ‘

Lucky to avoid the horsefly bite, they can be nasty 😐

I had two about six weeks ago (at parkrun), which needed antibiotics to stop them turning into major cases of cellulitis.

Instructor57 profile image
Instructor57Graduate10β€’ in reply tonowster

Wow ! 😨

nowster profile image
nowsterGraduate10β€’ in reply toInstructor57

I persuaded my GP to give me a course of antibiotics to keep in standby just in case it happens again. This was my fourth case of infected insect bites in three years.

Instructor57 profile image
Instructor57Graduate10β€’ in reply tonowster

Yes, I remember you having previous problems !Good call on the standby antibiotics as time can make a difference (as you are obviously aware) πŸ‘

I have bad reactions to horse fly bites too. This year I am even more wary, as last year I ended up with the weirdest rash in my arm pits, bra and knicker line (yikes 😬 😳) it appears I was attacked by harvest mites, or chiggers as they are known in the US. Honestly is there nowhere safe?!I feel I should run in netting .

Sounds great. Early morning runs are the only way to run in the relative cool. It's over 30 degrees here and no run today! Not sure about porridge on a hot day though πŸ€”

Instructor57 profile image
Instructor57Graduate10β€’ in reply toRoxdog

Yes, it was the best time to go !I can eat porridge all year round , although i do actually have a summer menu as well of homemade muesli with Almond milk and grated apple 😁

Roxdog profile image
RoxdogGraduate10β€’ in reply toInstructor57

Yum! I make granola, so similar I suppose. Either way, it's all healthy stuff!

Woollyweaver profile image

Oh my goodness, that is early - I can't even imagine what that looks like 😡, but well done you πŸ‘. So good to hear that your back is behaving 🀞

Instructor57 profile image
Instructor57Graduate10β€’ in reply toWoollyweaver

Haha, yes it's the earliest I have been out since doing C25K 2 years ago 😁Glad I did though, temp is now 26 πŸ₯΅

And back ok so far πŸ‘

I think if I ran that early I would have gone back to sleep after, the peacock is beautiful, fancy sharing your chickens food though I didn’t run today as have a niggle knee but it’s not too bad, maybe after work tomorrow.

I hadn’t thought of skipping the long run of a week, so far completed each one, next long run is Tuesday but will see how i feel then

Instructor57 profile image
Instructor57Graduate10β€’ in reply toSueAppleRun

The only reason I missed the long run was the back problem.I won't skip them and then go into an even longer one but I will do then slightly out of sequence .

And yes, I did go back to bed 🀣

SueAppleRun profile image
SueAppleRunGraduate1060minGraduateβ€’ in reply toInstructor57

I’ve got a bit of a knee problem, hence me thinking tuesday might be too soon for the 8k, I’ve run that distance many times but not with a problem and don’t want to push it. Mind you I’ve planned my route already

Instructor57 profile image
Instructor57Graduate10β€’ in reply toSueAppleRun

That's exactly where I was , ready for 15k !Route planned and everything but it would have been foolish for me to go ahead .

So I have stepped away from the plan but will keep up with some speed work and vary my runs but I'm not just going to increase distance weekly if I have an issue .... I'm in no rush and I will build the distance back again slowly when ready 😁

SueAppleRun profile image
SueAppleRunGraduate1060minGraduateβ€’ in reply toInstructor57

Good idea, my weeks are longer than most peoples so it’s slow progression, I thought I’d hate the interval speed runs but I love them

Instructor57 profile image
Instructor57Graduate10β€’ in reply toSueAppleRun

My weeks were longer also ! I don't do all the runs within a week.

And yes, the speed runs are fun 😁

Every post I am seeing is about how hot the weather is and wondering if we could swap, lol. I dont mind running in hot weather but I try to avoid mid afternoon run.Have you tried overnight oats? I love them as my Summer breakie..nice & cool πŸ˜‹

Instructor57 profile image
Instructor57Graduate10β€’ in reply toMe_time

I can't do mid afternoon either 😁And yes, had overnight oats many times πŸ˜‹

That was an early run but sensible too. It’s way too hot to run after 8 or 9 o’clock at the moment. I did an early for me run yesterday just after 6-30 ish and it was hot πŸ₯΅then too which is very unusual for north Cumbria. Take care of that back. They are strange things backs a law to themselves 🀣

Great to hear that you had a successful run, and that the back held up. Look at that peacock on the gate! It’s a wonder it’s tail didn’t unbalance it. I bet that sight made you smile. Oh, and going off-plan has its own unique joys, I find.

Instructor57 profile image
Instructor57Graduate10β€’ in reply toGailXrunning

Many thanks !Yes I thought I was seeing things when I saw the peacock 😁

Although it has been around the area for a while now .

It was in my garden once with my chickens 😁

Back held up but not convinced it's 100% 😐
