As I was running today (still slowly, but it's getting easier and slightly faster) I overtook a mum pushing a stroller and with a 4 or 5 year old in tow. "Move over and let the guy running go by" she said to the kid. Not just 'move over', not 'the guy jogging' but 'the guy RUNNING' - made my day!!!
I was immediately brought down to earth after I'd passed though, as I heard her say 'Ooh yes, you're gong to run too?!' And I realised I might be about to be overtaken by a sprinting 5 year old. He didn't though, so today I am officially recognized as a 'runner' by a member of the public and I know that I have the beating of a 5- year old. 😉

😁 haha, I know 'runner' sounds so much better than 'jogger', doesn't it? The other day I was talking to a colleague about my new found hobby of 'running' and he asked how far and how fast question and he said 'ah, you mean you're jogging'. I know he didn't mean anything by it but I was just a little put down. I don't know, 'runner' sounds more like athlete. I do have a secret pleasure when I say 'I'm going for a RUN' ☺️
Ignore your colleague; you are running. Your current pace( which will increase steadily over time) is irrelevant. Jogging is a term used to describe a particular type of running…..but it is definitely still running. 🙂
What's the difference between slow running, 8"/k and jogging! I'd love to call myself a fully fledged runner, but rather suspect I'm a jogger, or worse, a trotter!!
No difference Mormor; it is jogging and running at the same time …in my book you are a runner whether you like it or not 🙂. If you choose the label jogger over runner that is fine too.
The problem comes when people use the term jogger as a put down.
I just remember when I started C25k and I followed some faster runners along a path. We came up behind a couple of walkers. The lady said “make room for these runners” the man duly moved over, but as I went past he said “oh, this one is just a jogger”.,,,, the lady replied “ he is moving a damn sight faster than you ever do!” I just ran on and chuckled. But…that type of encounter might have put off some runners just starting their journey…..we are all runners. I have done a 28:17 5k since then….so I am not being defensive here….running is propulsion during which both feet are momentarily off the ground…speed doesn’t come into it. 👍
Thanks for replying and thumbs up. I don't usually see jogging as a put down but recognize it can have negative connotations.... I'm proud to be either considering I always dismissed running any distance as something that would never enter my psyche! How wrong I was. Now I fret I'll lose running fitness if I don't run for a week because of a cold...
