Ok, so I am lying in bed monitoring the rainy weather outside our bedroom window, waiting for the rain free window to start. And I can see it coming in the next 40min or so, in both of my weather apps.
I know, I know, some other runners would face the rain and run that long glorious refreshing and very very wet, soggy run.
But I have found some other running activity to keep me at least thinking about my next 10k runs, thanks to the @FootpathApp .
I was still thinking about my aspiration from back in spring, when I graduated from the 10k magic plan, and where I had planned to train up repeatedly to 10k using routes representing all four compass directions.
Well, my 10k consolidation period gives me another impetus to see if a bit of planning around my 10ks and a bit of help from my map apps could help with that.
Result is a series of 8 routes in all directions, two of which I have already run in my past training up to 10k, but six which I have have yet to fully explore.
And it feels great to have this set of routes in my back pocket! They also include two routes on canal tow paths and two on ex-rail lines. All of them are mainly trail, with a few road sections as connectors between different public footpaths. Only one or the other stile. One particularly has a couple of hilly sections.
So all looking good for my future 10ks. I think I’m fortunate to live in a running-route rich region! Thank you, running gods!
So now up and off on that 10k run! Happy running everyone!

Avoiding the rain here too! I never understood its appeal given a choice. 😆 The treacherous forecast, which promised a dry morning, now promises sunny intervals later on.
I do the route thing too though on OS map app which I already had before C25k. It’s good as it tells me the severity of the hills. Then I walk them first, just to make sure it’s runnable.
Wow! I wanna have your app. My apps just said “no rain but cloudy”, but sunny intervals probably only came in the deluxe version. 🤣
I love the OS maps and we have quite a few of them. But my home is on the rim of three maps, so I constantly had to lay out (via various advanced folding techniques) 3 maps to get a sense of the full picture.
When I realised last week that the footpath app added OS maps to its underlying map collections, I needed to trial it. I’m currently on a 7 day trial, but as I’m using the app almost runnly (e.g. every run, which amounts to a minimum of 3 times per week), I’m thinking of subscribing.
Well, I would normally buy a paper map of any area I would visit - holidaying etc. - and I noticed that even “new” the map might be several years old and out of date. I had one were I planned to walk and lunch at a village pub, marked on the map as a blue beer mug icon. When I got there, it had been converted into a private house! No lunch, no pint. 😤
I think each map costs £8 now but the OS map app is £15.99 per year, covers all of British Isles, includes all scales f maps, and is constantly updated. And it works with GPS so little chance of getting lost in the wilderness! (mind you I’ve forgotten my compass skills now). Another good thing for oldies like me is you can zoom in, great when I haven’t got my specs on. 🤓
Plus the subscription includes downloading it onto several mobile devices, so I plan routes on the tablet and go walking or cycling with it on the phone.
The weather app is just the BBC thing. It gets it wrong all the time, like it said it was dry this morning despite evidence it was raining, and it said sunny intervals this afternoon and it’s actually been near enough 100 % clear blue sky.
We use OS maps all the time now.We used to buy the maps or borrow from the library, but now that we have time to tour we would need a lot of maps each trip, assuming that we knew in advance which we would want.
It's great to have the saved routes for runs and walks offline on the phone.
I would love to be making a choice whether to run or not. I haven't been able to for four months after tearing my piriformis. Go out and have a run for me. X
Thank you so much. I am on the mend now, but not ready to run yet. I have a strength and recovery programme from a physio but I will check out the forum. X
I once ran in the rain and liked it. But nowadays I prefer to avoid rain if I can. I decided that if it already rains or looks really threathening, I don't run. If it starts raining during a run, I keep running. But I can feel really bad physically when I get wet + cold, so I prefer to avoid it.
i don’t do many, i just meander in a sort of circle around the village, but my first 10k was an out and back, I left willow running in the park, headed for the seafront, headed towards the pier and just kept going, started to think, if i ran 5k i’d have to go 5k to get back to Willow, even if I walked it and I ran slower and slower all the way back, then realised I’d left the poor guy waiting over an hour for me and hoping he hadn’t gone home 🏡
It's nice to have some variety. I also enjoy the planning nearly as much as the doing and I love an out and back. You get to see the same places from different angles.
While waiting to check in at the campsite on Wednesday I was chatting to another camper about our plans. On the mention of parkrun he said "weather permitting" of course. I said whatever weather we will run!We rarely miss a run because of rain, although maybe we wished we did on our trip to Northumberland. We got soaked through but the worst bit was the walk back in icy wind. We could just about manage to turn the key in the lock of of campervan. The hot shower was so welcome.
Yeah! They just recently added the OS maps and it is a game changer for me as well, as I’ve been playing with the idea of getting an OS subscription. Here it’s cheaper AND you get the added functionality of mapping and audio navigation.
I haven’t tried the sat nav audio navigation yet, so that’s next to try out. So good to hear that works well as well.
