Aftershokz in the rainšŸ˜§ - your experience?

I love my Aftershokz Air bone conductor earphones. I have had them for about 10 months now but have had a few problems with them after wet runs. šŸ˜•

I ran on Thursday; it was raining lightly when I set off but I didnā€™t wear a cap as I thought it wasnā€™t going to amount to much. Anyway, as it turns out, I got quite wet(šŸ˜‚). My music was fine throughout the run but after putting my earphones on to charge and checking they were ok later on, they (for the second time) had died! I checked them intermittently and it has taken two days for them to dry out and come back to life!

Aftershokz Air are sold as sweat/water-resistant but they are suitably vague on their website as to what this means! I am now thinking I will have to trade up to the more expensive Aeropex model which are sold as waterproof.

Just curious as to what your experience has been and what model you have?

Hi Sandraj39 I canā€™t comment on Aftershokz Air Iā€™m afraid, but Iā€™ve been using Aeropex for about 2 years without any problems. I hope thatā€™s some help at leastšŸ˜Š Good luck!

It all depends on the IP rating IP 67 are waterproof.

I believe aftershokz air are IP 55 ?

Hi Sandraj39, I have the Aeropex; the instructions that came with it say to wipe any moisture off it before putting it on charge. I believe that's also the case with other models in the range - and in fact the other models in the range can be killed by putting them on charge when they are wet / damp without first wiping the moisture off them, as it may cause an electrical short.

Not just a question of rain, but it's necessary to wipe any sweat off them before putting them on charge. I wipe mine down with a dry microfibre cloth after every run irrespective of whether or not I put them on charge.

Hopefully adopting such a procedure may allow your current AfterShokz to give you many more months or years of service?

I always wipe mine when I take them off too but tend to put them straight on charge. Will try making sure they have a little time to dry if they get wet in future. I have only recently found out that although Aeropex are sold as ā€˜waterproofā€™, the model I have (Air), are only sold as ā€˜sweat proofā€™ - I think this may be why. Thanks.

Hi Sandraj39 ā€¦I have aftershokz trekz titanium, Iā€™ve never had any trouble with them & I have been soaked to the skinā€¦.a lot!!! Maybe thatā€™s just lucky I donā€™t knowā€¦I hope you get sorted, so annoying when tech goes wrong šŸ˜‘ x

Iā€™ve had no problem with running with them in the rain Sandra, but I know the instructions on mine clearly say ā€œdo not charge straight after a runā€ because the moisture from sweat or rain May cause a problem. If you continue to have a problem though the aftershokz after sales is good. If you look on the website you can make a claim under warranty. I did last week as my headband broke and they are sending me the new open move ones. The old ones are titanium trekz.

Thanks - I clearly didnā€™t read that about charging straight after a run. Will see how I go but think I might be better off with getting the Aeropex at some point as they are sold as waterproof whereas the Air are not.

I've been known to wear mine for a wet run and then in the shower afterwards! They definitely won't charge if there's even a suggestion of damp on them though.

I have a Garmin watch which is fully waterproof but it absolutely stresses: do not charge if wet or damp as this can damage the device. Also it recommends rinsing sweat off immediately and then leaving to dry completely before charging. I imagine the headphones are the same. I bought the Aeropex waterproof ones but to be honest I haven't used them in the rain.

I find the Aeropex are very sensitive to moisture and will refuse to charge on occasion. They have an extra metal strip between the charging terminals to detect this.

The problem is the potential of the moisture causing electrolytic corrosion when charging.

Put the headphones in a warm dry place for a few hours and they should be OK.

Never charge anything when wet after rain, definitely wipe down first, I got the fully water proof ones and they are the best, some days as a fast food bicycle courier there is nothing more I like them listening to tunes whilst working, I even compile playlists on the fly when stopped and safe to do so. It has been through down pours and never let me down, I also sometimes like to harmonise something you would not get singing with over ear head phones. Worth every penny if you ask me. And I am considering them as hands free now I have a scooter šŸ›µ but have to consider it fully as driving takes a lot of my attention.
