First ever 10K , Depression and Runners Knee!

Good morning everyone. With the world going mad again and panic buying at the fuel pumps, this week hasn't been a good week for me!

However, in preparation for my first RACE FOR LIFE next weekend it was run day today. Struggled all week to hit 5K due to my stupid head. Also, a few weeks ago I developed "Runners Knee" and every stride I take it's permanently on my mind. So this morning I thought "SLOW DOWN, try and chill out and let's see what happens. End of Aug I ran a 9K from nowhere so thought I'd try the 10 today. Not feeling great as I walked out the front door I started off slowly. Reached the point I'd got for the 9K and thought I'm gonna bust the 10K.

Well I did it! Not posting for plaudits or attention seeking (I can't stand that). My reason is simply that in 8 months I've gone from starting C25K and just ran a 10K. I always run on my own and have had no proper training schedule or techniques, so I'm pleased with what I've achieved so far.

So Instructor57 I share your gremlins too sir and feel your pain! I run to try and keep myself fitter but the inner gremlins won't leave me alone either!!

Fantastic !It's amazing how these runs just come out of the blue sometimes, well done 👍

And yes, pace is key !

Slow and steady (or a conversational pace) definitely wins the race , infact I shouldn't even call it a race as it isn't !

And as someone who suffers with Anxiety and depression I know how relentless those Gremlins are 👍

So very well done , now leave a message here to claim your well deserved graduate 10 badge !

That's a good pace for your first 10km run too. Well done!

Thanks nowster. I have no idea and no benchmark for my age. I wasn't pushing at all and really had to reign myself in. It's like my body can't run slowly and always ready to click up a gear 🤣

You sound like me. My first 10km run was about that time (69 minutes) too.

Can I also add that running has been the best thing I have ever done for my mental well-being so keep going! Running is my medicine!😀

Hi Sandraj39Really pleased to hear you're getting a benefit mentally from it.

I still struggle. I used to be able to shut the world out, but as distance has increased I guess I'm having more time to think 😕. I don't get a "buzz" after due to my stupid brain not releasing the right chemicals! The Race For Life is very important for us all as everyone knows someone affected by Cancer sadly.

Woohoo! Congratulations on your 10k running legs!

I ran my 4th one this morning so it still feels all new!

Great stuff!

Well done you too (x4). Not sure if I'll be running 10K on a regular basis. Funny a few months ago I posted on here I had no desire to run 10K or marathons as I was finding the C25K training hard. My natural competitive nature has taken over 🤭

🤣🤣

I have to admit, I really enjoy the longer runs now, almost meditative. So very very mindful, and my runners high just keeps me in a constant happy mood. Running has really added immense joy to my weekly life!

I’m sure you’ll probably find yourself running more of these, judging from your post. 🤣🤣

Well done! Running is very good for your mental health. As a truck driver I can definitely say that without it I'd be in a straight-jacket!👍🏻🤣

(Please try not to worry. Its all media BS.) 😉

Thanks GoGo_JoJoFor me personally it doesn't seem to help.

Pleased it helps you and others.

You must be in huge demand at the moment Ms Truck Driver!! 😀

Contrary to what the media are saying (🙄) no, we cannot name our price, we cannot even still get access to basic hygiene facilities due to ridiculous covid guidance. It's all a really bad joke. We can however work for up to 15 hrs a day on less than min wage 🤣

Persevere. Whilst it's not a magic pill, the fresh air, the exercise, and those days when you see lots of smiley people, great wildlife etc, it does help.

I often think of you (and your trade) in these mad times. We are in the whirlwind of something not experienced often (if ever). However, this is where running is a saviour. Today my car is in red (deep) but the queues outside mostly empty petrol stations were Mad Max. So. I changed into my basketball gear, put the headphones on, picked some wicked tunes and went running towards the sunset. Petrol problems? What petrol problems? 😉

Exactly! Fortunately I managed to fuel both my truck (£420) and my car (£37.50) so that'll get me to work all week and working for a few days. It's ridiculous 🤣 but both times I was in and out within 15 mins, not bad! That's a win! 😁👍🏻

Hi Rayade900

I’m 53 and started C25K in Feb and have done a small number of 10kms. I, too, am amazed at what is achievable. I am hoping to add a bit more distance over the next few weeks and have to ensure I believe I can do it! Well done!
