Hello,

I’ve seen this mentioned in many posts, but have no idea what it means (newbie…). Could anyone please explain? Thanks!

Its where you run each km slightly fater than the previous - i.e. your pace increases incrementally throughout your run.

1km - 6:30

2km - 6:25

3km - 6:20

4km - 6:15

etc.

6:30 per km and splitting down??? I’ve got a long way of my sloth running to get there! Thanks for explaining it so well!

We runners do love our jargon don't we? 😂 A negative split run is where you run the second half faster than the first half. It’s hard to do but very good training!

Thank you, Irishprincess ! Now that I know what it means, I can see I have no need for a term that doesn’t apply to me :))I hope I can achieve negative splits in the future and get to brag about it in jargon 😜

I bet you’ll do it one day…. Just because you can 💪

As others have said, it's where you get gradually faster over the whole of a run.

It's one of those "nice to have" things that isn't often possible. The more important thing which is related is to start your runs more slowly so that you warm up gradually and don't run out of energy too soon.

Thank you, @Nowster! I should try that on a flat route. For now, I start slowly, and I end slowly 😆

As others have said.

And I see you’ve used Strava previously, Tzushka. If you pick a recorded run, scroll down to the end to Splits, those horizontal bars should get progressively longer towards the bottom.

It’s easier to get when it’s a flattish run and there are no up and down hills. It’s worth trying as it encourages us to be in control and be aware of our pace at any time.

Thank you, Ian5K ! On my usual route, the second half goes uphill (I also start uphill, then the road goes flat and downhill, so I can catch my breath), therefore I probably get… positive splits! :)
