A good run after a lot of faffing about

When I started c25k it was easy. Trainers, phone, off I go.

Then:

Learned about stretching

Got a running belt

Discovered the joy of lycra

Got fancy headphones

Graduated and discovered NRC

Got the Garmin

...all the gear, no idea...

Hurt myself. Learned a lesson.

So today was my third run since getting new trainers. I've now got running socks too (even more gear πŸ˜‚). Thanks to the ligament and a blister the exact size of a 10 pence piece I needed to add the following steps to my preparation to run:

Apply blister plaster to big blister

Apply ordinary plasters to the two smaller blisters I got from the new backless sandals I had to buy because of the massive blister on my heel

Do physio and then foam roller the dodgy ligament

Then, of course, dynamic stretches, turn on the Garmin, turn on location tracking on WhatsApp in case anything happens while I'm out, choose some music and finally off I went. Listened to Coach Bennett's Worst Advice Ever and managed just over 3k in half an hour, quite respectable for me. I was deliberately trying to go slowly and pretty much achieved it. No blister problems, no ankle problems, I'll know tomorrow if I overdid it but I'm optimistic I haven't.

So, the big question for me is 'what next?' Do another 3k on Saturday or....Park Run? I know I shouldn't run it all yet, that's what did me in last time but if I walk the uphill bits and some of the rest? By the time I walk there and back and do the run its about 7km in all so I wonder if it'd be too much.

As I write this I think I might stick with NRC, the temptation to go bonkers is probably too much in Parkrun.

PS Mr Garmin knocked another year off my VO2 age today 😁

PPS my new shoes are all grubby now thanks to overnight rain 😭

I think you should run parkrun but walk parts of it, running a full 5K perhaps is not advisable just yet.

Sounds like you had fun! It is addictive this running lark. I was going to rest today, but I've just been out for a walk to get my 10K steps in, and somehow sneaked in a crafty 2K of light jogging.

I've also been having fun with a blister on the underside of my foot. I'm not sophisticated enough to put a plaster on it, so I've just been battering it into submission. πŸƒβ€β™‚οΈ

I have a pair of Adidas Ultraboost 19s with 370K on the clock, but still a bit of rubber left. They have now been relegated to being my rainy day shoes so I can keep my newer ones clean (well less dirty!).

I agree that Parkrun would be too tempting to run too hard if you're just back from injury. That's one reason I've yet to try it. The other is I've got a dodgy ankle, but I've just bought an Aircast 60 ankle brace to stabilise it ... so hopefully I may risk it some time in the future. 😁

A blister on the underside...ouch. It's not like you can avoid walking on it 😰 I sent my old trainers for recycling, I'm 99% sure they're why my ligament went so I didn't want to be tempted to run in them again. This means, of course, that the new ones will get scruffy quickly but I'd rather not look like everything I run in is brand new.

Good luck with the ankle brace. Don't think I'll Parkrun this week, gotta take it easy. Also, it means I can sleep in a little longer ;)

Hmm, a 3k or ParkRun conundrum.....πŸ€”. Enticing though a ParkRun might be, I guess it just depends how well you are able to quell the mischievous voices in your head that might push you to do too much? I know that I have benefitted from erring on the side of caution in the past, and your blisters and ligament might appreciate it. 😊

As someone or other said ' I can resist anything but temptation' so I'm leaning towards a gentle 3k ish on my own. Gotta take it easy sometimes πŸ˜‰

"Discovered the Joy of Lycra"? Sounds a bit unsafe for work, that. 🀣

Wow what a lot of things you have to think about before heading outπŸ˜‚. Grubby running shoes are the best, it proves they are being used properly. Happy running πŸ€—

There'll be other park runs but you won't get to run them if you injure yourself. I know I would not be able to resist pushing too hard in the excitement of the running crowd.A bit of mud on your running shoes is the best look in my opinion.

What ever you decide I hope you have a good run πŸ™‚
