Hi all. Downloaded the Asics Runkeeper App and thought I'd try some different training to improve speed, stamina and fitness and break up the monotony of repetition. Read lots about needing to build core strength and mix up the type of runs (as I'm mostly doing 5K's every other day).
So after plugging in my headphones and starting the "Surge Training" program I set off running with a positive state of mind that I would be doing something different
Wow, what a shock!! After a warm up run at a gentle pace I was then sprinting for 30 second intervals x8. It was tough going and don't mind admitting I had to walk for a few minutes after the 6th time, but then completed it.
I guess "no pain, no gain"!

Varying your runs like this is a good way to progress rather than just running 5k all the time .Also maybe try longer slower runs , so a 5k , an interval run , then a longer slower run 👍
Hi Instructor57 and thank you.I'm not mega fast, but do find running slower more difficult 🤭. I seem to fall into a natural speed during a 5K and 30 mins is achievable.
Howdy! Welcome to the world of intervals. By far one of the best sessions for improving speed!
Dont worry about walking the recovery parts all you need to be is ready for the next fast section! Part of the process is teaching your body to run fatigued in the later parts of the sessions.
If your just starting out then 10-20-30 with a 2 min walking recovery is a good starter session.
Hi Windoze. Thanks for the advice. The defibrillator was written tongue in cheek of course 😄
It did kinda take me back to when I first started C25K earlier in the year and how hard I found the first few runs.
I'll get there... determined to keep this up. I was a better sprinter, than a long distance runner at school, but frightening that was 40 yrs ago!!! 🤣🤦♂️
Definitely recommend mixing different types of run Rayblade900 .
However, don't assume that what you did at school is an indicator of how you'll prefer to run now. At school I was lousy at sprinting and even worse at distance. I'm currently training for a trail marathon.
That's your second apology. Maybe best not to comment on my posts? I almost left the forum after last time, however I'm finding the help useful on here as I'm still new.I'll stay respectful in line with the etiquette on here.
Shocked me the first time I did intervals too but I enjoy them now. Mixing some speed work in adds variety and a different challenge; worth keeping at it if you enjoy it.
A variation I’ve sometimes attempted with my running club is 1 minute fast uphill, 2 minutes jog back x 12. We’re given a five minute “recovery” break after the first six. If you’re looking to build a routine with some variety hill reps can be another fun addition.
The thing that’s made the biggest difference to me is doing sessions with other runners. There’s something about it which makes me push just a bit harder.
You're bang on. I did my first Parkrun a few weeks ago and did a 28:04 and started way behind the timing line so my have been even quicker? 🤔😁It brings out my competitive spirit.
