Waking up today, it was a glorious morning and I had a dilemma.
After struggling to decide wether I should reserve my mornings for running or for Yoga, the weather decided for me. There was no way I was going to spent the valuable gorgeous weather inside, so out first thing for a 4.7k run!
I had forgotten the beauty of getting out there before the streets filled with school pupils heading to school and cars commuting to work. Sun provided a noticeable radiating heat, whereas the air was still cool and fresh.
I also wanted to try out running with a metronome and a podcast, something I had on my bucket list for a long time.
It worked, I enjoyed it, but think I need to give it a few more times, as it was actually not as easy to match up my steps compared to running to music. But I really enjoyed listening to a podcast and still having a beat! So it’s a winner!
Having said that, after getting back home, my battery was on 7% and I saw my metronome app alone was using up 30% of my battery power! My Runkeeper just used 2-3%! Overcast (podcast player) another 25%.
So I’ll have to watch this one!
But for today:
- beautiful run in the morning ✔️
- metronome app together with podcast is a winner, and I will do another 2-3 runs with this set up ✔️
- then.... maybe NRC?
Happy running!

I am testing old trainers and my cadence changes accordingly. A dip of about 15 SPM 😐 They say a good craftman never blames his tools, but maybe a runner does....😂
I gave a metronome app a try a couple of years ago, it worked, but it also drove me nuts even though I actually found it easier to run on the beat with than music. Isn’t it great that we’re all different?
Yeah, I’ll give it a good go! I might decide I like music better but I did want to listen to some podcasts as well. So we’ll see.
I find that I try out things and then settle on a preference. (Thus it was with the process of settling with Runkeeper after having also tried NRC, Strava and various others)
I once had I think NRC on with the screen full on permanently. I did not know NRC kept the screen on permanently (you can turn this off) and my battery was from fully loaded to fully drained in just 30 minutes. Shocker! I now don't use my phone anymore, I just have it with me for emergencies. I use my watch (which I don't look at until I am done) and a Gymboss timer around my arm for the Jeffing intervals.
Now Sunday I am participating in a paid virtual race of 6 km with commentary about what you would see when running actually in Antwerp instead of in my little park + you get updates and such in real time of where you are in regards to the other runners and such. So this time I will have to use my phone with earbuds for 1 time.
Oh, good luck! I’ll be woohoo-ing from the virtual sidelines!
Battery: I had a similar experience with my photo app. Normally it shuts down after a while when the phone goes to sleep, but at a section of the run I realised it had stayed awake for 20min and drawn 50% of power 😱. One to watch!
