I went for my physio appointment yesterday evening. The hip has settled down a fair bit over the last few days so I think was hoping he would say it would be OK for me to start running again. But he was unequivocal in saying that it would not be advisable. 😢
His diagnosis was gluteal tendinopathy so I have a programme of daily strengthening exercises (no stretching) to perform as a series of circuits. Think single leg glute bridges etc I did them for the first time earlier today 🥵
Then, in two weeks’ time I can possibly think about going for a short gentle run.
I was relieved but also disappointed at the same time. 😥
He did say I'd been doing all the right things. Rest and ice. Gentle walks etc and most important STOPPING MY RUN when I did. So I guess things could have turned out worse.
Today would have been an absolutely glorious day for a run, especially as I had plenty of time, what with me being off work and the only chore required was to drive Mr B to get his second jab.
Oh well! C’est la vie! 🤷♀ I'll have to take a rain check on the 10k I signed up to via work to raise money for St Mungos this month
At least I got to have a short mooch about on Abbey Fields by Colchester Garrison and enjoy the sunshine 🌞and the blossom 🌸on the trees.🌳
I also managed to get a cheeky 1.1km swim 🏊♀ in first thing this morning. The physio says that’s perfectly fine. As long as I can get some more sessions booked, it will help maintain fitness levels – and hopefully get me back into the swing of exercising before work for when I start running again.

I'm glad you had your physio appointment ! Yes, it's frustrating you can't run yet but at least now you know what you are dealing with and have a timescale in mind !

That was exactly my aim from the appointment. So it has to be a positive right. I'm just so glad I stopped that run when I did instead of trying to tough it out. I think I knew 2k in something wasn't right.
Now that's a pity that you can't run but of course you must take advice from your physio, well done on that swim, you say that you like to know about other people's runs, well this morning I ran 7K in around 52 minutes, this is in preparation for me taking part in the Vitality Virtual London 10,000 later in May or early June.
Well done on that 52 minute 7k run Al. That sounds like perfect preparation en route to your virtual Vitality London 10,000
I ran that race last October as my graduation run from ju-jus Magic Plan and it was an amazing experience. I ran to raise almost £1,000 including gift aid for the Sue Ryder hospice who looked after my best friends mum whilst she was terminally ill until she got sick with covid-19 and died during the peak of the pandemic last Spring.
I think you will run a very good time in that race if you runs carry on like that.

I agree with Ian. Of course it’s frustrating but you now have a plan of action and a timescale. You have tailored exercises and can can still keep active with your swimming and gentle walking. You can still get out and enjoy the sunshine! I know you’ll do the exercises, so fingers crossed you won’t be on the IC for too long
Yes it's frustrating. But I do have a plan and a route back which is what I wanted to get a out of my appointment.I can definitely feel the difference between the injured and uninjured side - the excercises highlight that.
So yes I'll keep plugging away and finally being able to get a few swims in will help preserve my sanity.

Unfortunately I’ve had to put my bike into storage. There’s no room for it here. My cycling career will have to wait, but I’m thinking of taking up swimming when I feel more settled.
There’s a fairly new leisure centre that I’ve never been to that has a pool. It’s only a 10 minute drive. I wanted to give it a bit of time to settle down for a couple of weeks - I’m sure it’s packed. I’m not a brilliant swimmer, but I’ll see how I do!
I know it's frustrating having to stop but it's good that you got a diagnosis now. The strength work will help you loads in the future but single leg glute bridges sounds tough!
It must be a relief to know some rest and strengthening will get you back running before too king. Oh you got your swim in, I’m really pleased and just a little envious, with a couple of people off sick I will be lucky to get one day off this week and doubt a swim will happen but am thinking soon. Heal well and keep letting us know how you are getting on
Thanks SolaIt's a bit hit and miss with the swims - you have to book in advance of course, and with restricted availability I have to take the sessions when I can get them. It's not always obvious when new slots come online and by the time you check they're all booked up.
It is nice to be back in the water though - I hope you manage to fit in a swim soon - pool or sea
If it warms up i shall go in the sea but if ever i get some time off i might take my grandson to an indoor pool. At least you get some swimming in and i’m pleased for you
Glad you're ok and stopped running when you did BL, unlike myself 😬 when I read your post I thought it sounded like my injury, and it is...except I didn't stop running .... 😬 you've been really sensible and I'm very pleased that it probably won't be too long before you're back in action running again. I'm only just starting to run walk again this week.... give yourself a pat on the back for being much more sensible 😁👍
He made a distinct point of asking me about how long I carried on once I realised something was wrong. I think maybe I should have stopped even before I did. But, as we know only too well, hindsight is a wonderful thing! I hope you are still on the road to recovery and that the run/walks haven't set anything off

I'm so thankful that I can go for a swim now, otherwise I don't know what I would do. I still can't believe this is me - being frustrated at not being able to run. What a mad, crazy time these last 13 months have been.
Excellent news that you now have a plan Birdlady, and perfectly timed for the reopening of swimming pools to maintain your fitness. You will be back, just stick to those exercises.🏊🏻♀️ 🏃♀️

Thanks Lifluf.I've hidden my shoes away in a cupboard where I can't see them so they're no longer staring at me all the time and reminding me of what I can't do! 😁
It really is frustrating to have to stop something you love doing, but it really isn’t worth making things worse, so following the advice of your physio and taking it easy is definitely the right thing to do. Hopefully it will only be a few weeks before you back out running.
Enjoy your swimming for now though, it will give you all round fitness.

so sorry, that must be awful for you, but its better that you get yourself fit and healed and then you will be in a much position to come out to enjoy yoyr runs, hopefully injury free, and.................. it will be even nicer weather! 👍😀🏃♀️
