Good morning to you all. It is Saturday again which means it is time for us to run and pretend it's at a parkrun. Only of course we are not at a parkrun, just running our normal 5K on our own, Social Distancing, all that stuff which has become so important. I can't wait for the real new normal where we hug friends and high five each other at a real parkrun. But until then we carry on. Every week its getting closer. Vaccines are being rolled out and we are edging closer to the start line. This is a year since the start of lockdown here in Ireland. I was working in Belfast this weekend last year and did my last parkrun this day last year. A year of parkrun being stopped, who would have thought? Anyway, we are running, we are still running. When so many fellow parkrunners have stopped running we have all continued on, not only that but we have new people joining us every week which is fantastic. If your reading this for the first time, welcome. All you have to do is Jog, Walk or Run (and any combination of the 3) for 5K at your own pace and pop back here under this thread afterwards and let us all know how you got on. I slept in this morning. But I'm in my running gear now as I type out this post. Looking forward to reading the replies and catching up later. Happy running.

Morning Damien and friends! I did my (Not) PR yesterday and used it as an experiment for tomorrow’s HM. Just a slow 5k jog coming in at 39:18. Very windy and wet underfoot, and it’ll more than likely be my go-to HM loop with the rest of the common waterlogged after this week’s unforgiving weather! 💦💨
I walked up there again this morning. Not too bad and it’s possible I can add on some more trails, but as I was leaving in the car it began to bucket down and hail!
Good morning Damien, it was this day last year, Saturday 14th March to be precise that the last official Parkrun in the UK were ran. This morning I ran my 52nd virtual parkrun which was my 39th (not) parkrun.
My right leg is nearly back to normal, once it is I hope my 5K time will be back to sub 40 minutes, this morning I ran it in 40.39, however, my app kept pausing and the feeling I had at the end of the run felt like almost 6K, so today could have been sub 40 minutes, I ran the final 2K non stop.
ParkRun day for me today. I don’t post here every week as I know how much everyone is missing the real thing in the UK. I am always running it for you all! I ditched Jeff today and thought I would see how I would go just running it straight as haven’t done that for a few weeks. I was very pleased to get a Park Run PB of 31.57. Hopefully, the 80/20 running is starting to pay off ❤️🏃♀️
Never feel guilty for being able to run parkrun RunWillie. It gives us hope that someone somewhere is still able to enjoy what we miss so much. Keep it up and tell us all about it. 😀
Thank you for being so thoughtful RW but as Dexy says, we do love to hear about real Parkruns. When the do start up in the UK there is a good chance it may only be England to start with but I know we will want to shout it from the rooftops.
Well done. Great running. Join in every week if you want. We are only doing this to stay motivated. Even when the real thing returns we will keep this as a weekly thread.
Good morning damienair and fellow (not) park runners! As it happens, I didn’t do parkrun this time last year as I was on my way to London for my Hampton Court half marathon. It seems such a long time ago! However, this morning I and my running buddy set off in thankfully dry, but extremely windy, conditions and I came in at 31.47. Slower than the last two weeks, but I am more than happy, considering that at one point, I felt as though I was being blown backwards.
Probably my last (not) parkrun with my son, as he is planning to go back to his own place next weekend. Still, he arrived on 13th December to self isolate for 10 days before our family Xmas get together (which was cancelled 😠), intending to go back to London after New Year and has been here ever since. A 3 month bonus I didn’t expect, but I think he’d rather be with his housemates now 😂
Vaccine appointment on Tuesday - next step back towards real life 😃😃
I know exactly what you mean about the wind, it was tough going. Wow, a year since your HM! I remember that and the Bath Half being a choice. Eldest kitten is in the same situation as your son but I can’t persuade him to do (not)parkrun! Hopefully he’ll go back in April.
Looking at our local stats it seems to be the older runners doing (not) parkruns, and nationwide 51% women. I think the youngsters don’t see the point of doing it without other people. But It’s certainly helped us find the motivation to keep going.
Same with us Dexy. None of the club runners join in unless coerced by the Event Director. I agree, it keeps the rest of us going. I think I’ve only missed a couple of 5k runs in the past year.
To be fair, he hasn’t done many runs and he did say that this morning was a bit slow, but he stayed with me! Must be very frustrating for eldest kitten. The final term doesn’t tend to have more than a couple of weeks’ teaching before they go off on revision leave either. Fingers crossed for a full year next year for him
A slower run probably did him good though and more time with mum.
He is frustrated and wondering if he should repeat Year 1. Hopefully they will have a plan for that as I’m sure he’s not the only one. He really does need to go back though.
Well done Sandie, great running. Sorry I am only catching up now. Happy Mothers Day. Great to hear that your getting the Vaccine. Roll out of the Vaccine in Ireland is absolutely awful. Very Very slow. The UK are doing brilliantly.
This time last year I volunteered as I had returned from my ski holiday with a ligament injury. I was hoping to volunteer for the following 5 weeks to gain my lilac volunteer shirt, but it was not to be.
I had my vaccination yesterday so decided to take it easy today, but I did run an exhilarating (not) parkrun on Thursday with the gale force wind behind me. Result: an all time PB for 5k of 31.15. It was sunny and dry, apart from the deluge of sea spray during the first km, which forced me to run on the sodden grass on the common. Thanks have to go to UpTheStanley who dropped me off in the car at one end and picked me up at the other. That was a first. 🌬💨🌊🏃♀️🌊
A cotton wool head, 😀it was exactly 4 weeks ago that I got my first jab, I also got a achy arm, only 2 to 4 hours later, also 48 to 50 hours after the jab, in the evening I felt a little shivery, but after I put the heating up a bit, that shivery feeling had gone, now I am expecting the letter for my second vaccination to come shortly.
Oh Wow Dexy5 Huge congratulations on your PB. Fantastic running. You'll be well ahead of me now when parkrun returns, both in finish time, number of runs and Volunteer T-Shirt. Vaccine roll out here is ridiculously slow. So it will be sometime after England's return to parkrun before Ireland gets going.
Absolutely. I'm going to start back doing some interval training this week. I need to start pushing myself again. And get back to doing one extra slow long run each week to build up endurance. The trip to Southsea will be very special.
I did 5k this morning... And I think it would have been a personal best, only that a random man stopped me for a conversation, commenting on my running clothes and that he didn't think my trainers were good enough for running! Uhh... Thanks for the input... I think it took about 2 minutes off, but my phone was in my belt so I couldn't very well get it out, pause, talk and unpause... But going by the pace of the other 4km I think it would have been PB... Anyway... Next time...
Good run for you today Running J123, although I put 40.39 for my 5K time this morning my app kept pausing, but I kept running, especially the last two kilometers, I felt like I had ran a 6K, so like you our times were probably quicker than stated, that would give me my first sub 40 minutes 5K for several weeks.
That sounds a strange encounter. Anyone who is a runner wouldn’t dream of stopping someone mid track to discuss their running shoes. I have have got auto-pause on my GPS watch so that time stops if I have to stop mid run.
That's a bit weird. Some people have no idea that when you are out for a run you want to keep going. I do stop to talk sometimes if it is someone I know (and like!) But generally a cheery comment in return has to suffice
It was a bit weird really... He actually said he'd seen me from his house for 4 days and then not the last 2, and thought he'd say hello today 🤔 At the time I was more surprised than anything, but now I've had time to think, maybe I'll find a different route for a bit.. Pity, because I liked that one.... But after that poor girl in London it makes me feel a bit more cautious
Don't let yourself be scared off but just be aware of your surroundings. I always try to run where it is open and I can see around me, a habit from when we had dogs. To avoid fights as much as anything!
One dog spent ages barking at some bushes - no way was I going to investigate, even though it was probably a squirrel
Some people just feel they have to make some comment. I regularly see a woman who always has to say something, even on a non-running day she thinks I need it pointing out that I am not running! We know her of old, used to chat when walking our dogs, so I usually give some vague reply.
Ah that is so annoying. That was just some clueless busy body with a useless opinion on everything. Obviously has not a clue about running. No runner would ever stop another runner mid stride to comment on runners or clothing. Great running and I'm sure you'll break that PB any day now.😀
I was scheduled to run today. I slept in long this morning too. My most recent run (Thursday lunchtime) felt a bit of a slog, so I've decided to award myself an extra rest day and go for a 5km walk instead. I also did a 5km walk yesterday evening on the way to the chippy. I'll save the long run until tomorrow morning.
I am off work next week (take the days before the end of the month or lose them), so will be trying something slightly different (and some gardening)...
The walk was an amble of 6km in the local woods, getting very muddy shoes in the process. The path had disappeared in places following the rain we had at the latter part of last week. I got a very close photo of a chicken through a fence, and the chicken in turn pecked at my gloves.
I'm now going to gird my loins for the long weekend run...
Hi damienair and lovely running friends, I ran my (not) Parkrun along the seafront at Bognor this morning. There was a stiff tailwind but the promenade was covered in shingle from recent storms in places, which sort of makes up for it!
I finished 5K in 26:49 which is a personal record for me, and achieved 10 segment personal records too!
I’m feeling so pleased with myself today😀 I might have a little celebration later!🥳🥂
Well done David, you’ve got to use the wind to your advantage when you can . PBs all round on the south coast. We’ve had rain, sleet and hail this morning and now beautiful blue sky. I love getting those Strava segments PRs too.
47 minutes plus on Tuesday. I did 4k on Thursday (slow again) and thought an extra day's rest is on the cards so I'll be doing my longer run tomorrow and hope to get below 45 minutes again for my 5K.l split. Just off to do some eccentric heel raises.
Good afternoon Damien. I volunteered on the last parkrun - kick myself now as I was only a spare cog on refreshments so I could have run. Ah well, 🤞 it will be back before we know it.
I was only going to walk it today due to tomorrow’s HM but as usual couldn’t resist. I’m like a bear with a sore head if I can’t run, just read last week’s Strava feeds 🤣 Unfortunately the wind made what was supposed to be a gentle, easy run, pretty tough work. Such a strong, cold wind pushing us back along the longest straight of our run, it was very tiring.
So this week’s run was 31:29 which isn’t bad, probably faster than it should have been but hopefully I’ll sleep well tonight.
Wild and windy rain all night and forecast to continue during the day but we set off in light rain which eased off, apart from a short spell of stabbing hailstones. I just did the bare minimum 5km this morning, wary of having to trudge uphill in more hail. But the sun came out while we were waiting for our breakfast order.
Fastest run of the week for me, because my Monday running friend had a day off with some (hopefully minor) foot pain. I always run faster with him, he says my talking speeds me up Then on Wednesday I did a gentle run, never too far from home just in case I was hit by any post-vaccine symptoms. I wasn't, thankfully.
Did my (not) parkrun today. We were naughty and drove about 5 miles, but we did enjoy it (don't tell anyone!). I'm fed up of running the same routes around the village, so we (me and Mr AG) ran along a disused railway line for a change. It was so nice, but my poor running shoes will never be the same colour again 🤣
Well done. I won't tell anyone. I know what you mean, I've been running the same boring 5K loop for it feel like ever, on my own. It is nice to try a new route.
Late again - no excuse really, as I did my (not) parkrun yesterday...
My last parkrun was 14/3/20 with my best time of the year (28.32), following recovery from a hamstring injury, and was my 60th. No attempt to match that time yesterday - I decided to try to keep the old heart rate down. Not easy when the wind was still quite gusty - also half a km from the end the heavens opened, which motivated me to up the pace and head for a handy bus shelter. I still ended up looking like a drowned rat though!
Time 30.36 - however I did manage 78% in HR zone 3 and an additional 2 points on VO2 max.😀 Happy running one and all👍
I haven’t run this weekend. Far too much wind, even though it means (for once) there would have been enough space on our promenade to run on a Saturday. I am hoping tomorrow brings better weather, we have had 3 days of fairly horrible storms here on the south coast.
I look back with a lot of sadness on a year without parkrun. It’s been difficult to keep up motivation to run, especially as I need regular access to a swimming pool to keep my hips fully mobile, and we have had large blocks of closure. 29th March (see friends and family) and April 12th (go swimming and get hair cut) have big rings round them in my diary. Hoping we can follow with June 5th parkrun restart.
As I volunteered on the very last parkrun before closure, I will probably volunteer on the first one back - getting it going again is so important to me. I am so grateful to Dexy5 , UpTheStanley and Oldgirlruns for getting me this far. That and England managing to win today.
A wise move , having had endured several hail, sleet and rain showers yesterday. But It’s looking nice out today so I hope you will be able to enjoy a good run (before the next rugby match).
Our motley crew have all helped each other get through the ups and downs of the last year so we are just as grateful to you and Mr Coddfish. Just think, if it wasn’t for parkrun, we may never have met .
I guess we wouldn’t have met and we would have been a lot poorer for it. I went out for a run at 8:30 this morning and it was gorgeous. Lots of GSR 19 shirts out (including mine) - the Baffins runners out in force.
It was high winds and storms here all week too. I did not run all week. But got out yesterday and struggled. Very cold, windy and heavy showers. I think i will also volunteer for the first parkrun. Although we will be months after you. The first parkrun will be very emotional I think.
I ran my (not)parkrun yesterday. It was certainly NOT a parkrun. No crowds, no atmosphere. Just the same boring 5K route on my own again. I had not run all week. I had zero motivation to go out into the wind, rain and cold. But I forced myself out the door yesterday. Very stormy with some showers. I struggled. Really struggled, I ran, jogged and walked my way around in a time of 34:26. A full 9 minutes slower than my parkrun PB. I'm going to start back trying some interval training and longer runs. I need to up my game again.
Did my my first 7.5K today. My 5K split was just over 47 minutes. I walked every 500m for the first 3K/4K to check my right calf. Of course after 5K it was fine! I am just doing one midweek run next week to give me some extra rest and keep doing those heel raises and planks Got to get the balance between running and strength exercises right! I am sure it will help me get back to where I was last month.
Well done. Best of luck on your recovery. I was starting to feel a niggle coming on last week. My left knee was sore when I went up and down stairs and for the first few minutes of a run. Due to bad weather I took a week off and now my knee is fine again. A rest usually works a treat. Good luck.
Well done Brian. Me too. I'm just barely hanging in there, only for this forum I'd have given up. Without races or parkrun I have almost zero motivation. Vitual stuff just doesn't do it for me. The day that parkrun returns will be a very special day.
Hi all, did a slow 8k this morning (the last 2k were really hard). 38.38 for the 5k. Miscalculated my route & finished my planned distance far too far from home (I guess I could've run some more, but didn't want to push it), so it was a cold, windy walk back 🥶. Glad I managed it though.
