Happy weekend. For any of you new graduates whom have started running during COVID-19 world you may have heard of a thing called parkrun. parkrun is a free 5K which takes place every Saturday morning all around the world. It is for everyone, slow, fast, able, disabled, big, small and everyone in between. And don't forget about the super Mum's and Dad's who push their babies in buggies. You can walk, jog, run, run/walk, it's not a race, just a run in the park and loads of us here on Bridge to 10K did it religiously every Saturday morning.
Obviously we can not do it anymore. We we are all hoping that parkrun will start back up in 2021, I'm sure it will. So until parkrun returns, we take part on our own, in a Virtual parkrun every Saturday morning. We post after our run and let everyone know how we got on. The little run report can be done over a post virtual parkrun coffee and treat/cake. (parkrun is all about the after run coffee and cake, and meeting friends old and new). It can be run/walked on any route close to you which is 5K. Does not have to be done in a park, you can even do it on a treadmill.
If you are a new graduate and would like to start, all you have to do is a 5K run/jog/walk anytime Friday, Saturday or Sunday and write a little run report under this post. It's like a little community and it is good fun, sets you up nicely for the weekend. If you want to you can register on the parkrun website and you can log your 5K (not)parkrun. In fact you can log any 5K done during the week as a (not)parkrun on the website. I only log Saturday runs, when I remember.
Anyway, looking forward to my run this morning and also looking forward to hearing from all of you. Happy running and have a lovely weekend.
Damien
I've pinned the post. So please respond over the next day or two in the below thread. Happy running.

Top of the morning to you Damien, a very nice photo of you with the Parkrun Logo.
This morning just after sunrise and only 30 minutes after the non stop π¨ snow then rain β stopped I ran in a time of 33.49 my 38th virtual and 25th (not) parkrun, there were hundreds of puddles as you might expect after all that snow melt and rain, I saw six other runners including a girl about 9 who was running along with her father, so apart from the puddles the run was OK.
That is correct week 7, only 2 weeks until my 40th virtual parkrun, that's on the 19th December, only 6 days before Christmas Day, I will run wearing my reindeer Santa jumper and my red π Santa hat, with my 9 inch natural white beard, if anyone calls me π Santa they are welcome to do so.
You are correct TailChaser, the next 2 Saturdays will be very Christmasy for me, next Saturday I will have Christmas pop music to run to from my Spotify Xmas list with songs such as Running, sorry that should be Driving Home for Christmas and All I want for Xmas is you, the following Week it will be Christmas Carols from another Spotify list I have, I like that title Running Home for Christmas π€Ά π
Excellent Al. Great running as always and looking forward to reading about your 40th Virtual parkrun. If parkrun was on this year we would have had a 2 in a row, Christmas Day and Boxing Day.
Sadly my hopes of a dry common were dashed overnight by heavy rain. π¦ π¦ It was looking promising on my dog walk yesterday.
I reluctantly headed out with Flossie and began trudging up the hill to the start. Decided to jog part of it to try to get warm, but it didnβt help much. π
Anyway, begrudgingly trotted round my little course being stung by icy raindrops and buffeted by an easterly headwind for most of it (why, itβs a loop?), with the added fun of being slippery in places. 38:24 was my time. Was it fun? Nope. But I earned my fresh cinnamon swirl. π
Very well done Cheeky for trudging through it. I've been very bold this week Cheeky. No running. Yesterday we decided to travel to visit my Sister as it was her Birthday and we surprised her with a little visit for a couple of hours. So I'm going to do my (not)parkrun and speed challenge when Nicola gets back from her walk. There is a freezing fog here all day. It will be a cold one.
Bit late this morning. Just trying to remotely organise eldest kitten as he is about to travel home from uni...
Very late run so lots of people about, going on a Saturday shop for the first time in a month. However the upper edges of our run were as quiet as usual.
Wore my snazzy new christmas shoes for the first time. They felt much lighter than my usual ones but also a bit harder. The first k was definitely faster so I had to slow down!
Conditions were lovely just a bit chilly. But sunny! Weβve not seen the sun since the start of the week so it was a big treat.
Anyway, they got me a 1k pb for my speed challenge (really donβt think I can go any faster now) and a 5k of 27:53 which Iβm happy with.
Now to pick eldest kitten up from the station πππ
Very well done TC. Your new shoes do look cool. I did not run all week. I've been really bold. And I was away yesterday although did do a nice 5K forest walk with the family. So will do my 5K soon, freezing fog here today, I will also try and do my 1K speed challenge. Don't know if I can beat 4:55, but I'll give it a go.
After our run we walked up the hill to collect our bacon, egg and mushroom toasties before heading home to a nice hot drink.
Oh! Did you want to know about the run as well?
We were pleased that the rain and sleet had cleared overnight and it was quite a bright morning. A bit chilly but we were dressed for it.
We did our usual route down from the village, a bit wet underfoot but better than I had expected. At my usual turning point I was going well so ran onto the farm at the end of the track. A total of 6.72 back to the finish where we stopped to talk to some volunteers at the Community Hydro before walking back, phoning ahead with our order for 2nd breakfast.
We have now just passed the 800 mile point of the LeJog challenge. I will add more detail to my weekly report tomorrow.
Well done Sue. Those breakfasts do sound great. I am only replying now as I was away yesterday visiting my Sister. A little Birthday surprise. I have to do my own run yet. Should be going within the hour. Freezing fog out there today. It is really cold.
Good morning Damien, hope your run went well. It was a post eight day IC comeback slow 5k for me this morning, (physio's orders) so I was a bit apprehensive. My calf has still been quite painful(on and off) since the deep massage on Wednesday. Miraculously, after my warm up walk, everything felt great. So I clicked into snail drive and went for it. The trail was very wet, so there was a bit of slipping and sliding through muddy puddles, but my calf was on best behaviour; not so much as a twinge. So, a steady 34:32, 137 bpm average HR and VO2 max gave me a point back. Top that off with a sunny but cold day, bit of chat with passers by and a flat white and triple chocolate brownie; the world seems a better place. π
Well done and welcome back from the IC. I have no excuse. I took a week long break myself, laziness more than anything but I am going to go out soon for my 5K today. I'll also fit in the speed challenge.
A bit of a late one for me this week and very wet and muddy after yesterdayβs horrendous weather. Iβm still finding it hard for some reason (if I could sleep it might help!) but am determined to stick to 3 runs a week. A miserable 34.04, but at least itβs done. Happy running everyone πββοΈππ»ββοΈ
That's not good Sandie, still having trouble with your sleep? It's not SAD is it? I can recommend getting a lamp if it is, it does seem to be helping with mine (so far, touch wood). I hope it gets better very soon π€
I think itβs a more sedentary life than in Spring so Iβm not physically tired, being in tier 3 is really getting to me and my parents arenβt well (not covid thank goodness)
Sorry to hear you are having a hard time Sandie. Sometimes you just have to recognise that running isnβt coming easily and just keep putting yourself out there until one day the joy comes back. Hope it doesnβt take long and that your parents improve.
Tier 3 is rubbish Sandie but try to remember itβs not for ever even though at the moment it feels like it. Are you going to be able to see them for Christmas?
Sorry to hear this Sandie, but I donβt think you are on your own at the moment. The neighbours we shop for were saying they were having problems sleeping this week , due to not being so physically active.
Well done Sandie. You are doing much better than me. I have been really struggling for the past few months. I am just bored running on my own. Not having anything to aim for is really not helping. I just cannot wait for parkrun to return for real. There is just nothing like running in a crowd, chasing a PB or just going for a nice relaxed parkrun and soaking up the atmosphere. I need to have an actual race or parkrun to train for to give me some focus. It is really hard at the moment to stay motivated. I've just received a Home Brew Beer making kit to keep me entertained for a bit. A new stupid hobby is just what I need right now. And I'm going to get up off my lazy ass now and go for a 5K.
I know exactly what you mean. Running a βvirtualβ parkrun or race is all very well and reading everyoneβs weekly reports has been a lifeline, but, at the end of the day, itβs still just a solo run around your normal training route! Still, I went for a 7k walk in the sunshine today to an ancient wood 10 minutes drive from home that I didnβt even know existed and it was lovely (but very muddy!)
This LeJog challenge has been good for me, although I think we would still have been running 3 times a week without it. I am looking forward to a break from logging all of the walks but may need to find a new challenge after Christmas
I went out early this morning for my (not) Parkrun. It was supposed to be the Nottingham Christmas 5k tomorrow which has now gone virtual so I have logged the result in both. I managed a time of 31:48 this morning. I was so grateful for my trail shoes this morning due to the mud and slippery leaves. Thankfully I managed to get around in one piece and my shoes were thoroughly christened with mud. It was great fun after the snow yesterday.
Hi Damien, nice to put a face to the name π, hope you had a good run this morning. I ran this afternoon as I met my sister in Bala this morning. The weather was great today and the mountains looked fantastic with their dusting of snow. I hadnβt seen my sister since before March so it was quite an emotional meeting. I have never run in the afternoon as I usually run before eating. I found the cold quite difficult to run in at first. I have asthma which is cold induced so after 10 mins I was wheezing like a train. I started off Jeffing and when I was warmed up started to increase the length of run before walking again. My time was 39.41 which I was really pleased with. Hope all of you have had a good dayβs running today. Enjoy the rest of your weekend ππ»ββοΈππ»ββοΈππ»ππ»ββοΈππ»ββοΈππ»
I did not do my run yet, I shall do it soon. Like you, yesterday we decided to travel to visit my Sister as it was her Birthday and we surprised her with a little visit for a couple of hours. There is just 1 year between my sister and I and we were always very close growing up, and it was lovely as I had not seen her in a few months. I am going to go out and do my run soon. I am just waiting for my wife to come back from her walk.
Very well done on your run yesterday and getting under the 40 minute mark.
Less chilly than I'd expected at 9.00 this morning , but an east wind took its toll on my first couple of kms. Avoided the park , as all the football practice would have resumed, so it was pavements all the way today. However the wind did help me towards some very welcome negative splits - 6.09, 6.07, 6.02, 5.51, 5.37, making 29.46 in total.π
Hi Damien,Thanks for this information. I was feeling a bit out of it since I had seen these "park runs" but thought it was a local thing. I live in Connecticut, USA and would not have been surprised if this was just a UK thing. But now that I know I can participate as well here, I'm all in! Thank you again for the explanation.
No problem. Your so welcome to join in every weekend. Keep a look out too when all this COVID-19 malarkey goes away as there may be a real parkrun popping up close to you at some stage. There are new events opening up all over the US and Canada every year. Looking forward to seeing you join in again soon.
Iβm a bit out of sync with everyone else with fitting my long runs on days of good weather and avoiding busy Saturday running. So my virtual Parkrun was on Tuesday this week and posted separately.
Most satisfying as the speedy UpTheStanley paced me to a PB (not) Parkrun time of 32:19. I now have my real parkrun PB time (31:38) to aim for but that will take a little while.
The run was followed by take-away sausage baps and cappuccino.
Excellent running Dexy. And well done too to UTS for pacing you to your (not)parkrun PB. Congratulations. I have yet to do my run. I'll be going out soon.
Only my second (not) parkrun yesterday and might be my last for a bit as I have pain below my inner ankle bone on the left and into my foot. I tried ignoring it but I might have to stop running at least for a couple of weeks. Anyhow, I went to my venue - local park - and it was bright and not too cold. Lots of people playing football and quite a few other runners and families. I ran it in 32:52, 12 secs slower than last week but average ish, I'd say, for parkrun so far. (My best is 29.55, set in Feb this year - no idea how I did that and it may never happen again!) Thank you for setting up the pinned post π
Well done on your time and on your 5K. I hope your niggle is resolved very soon. Take a few days off and perhaps try a nice gentle slow short run in a few days time to test it out. Rest up and wishing you a speedy recovery.
I left it late to do my (not)parkrun. I am just back in now following my 5K run in freezing fog. -2 degrees, the frost from last light never melted away. I met my neighbor and her two little girls outside my house just before I set off. Asked them if the letters to Santa were posted off yet etc. One of the little girls is around 5 years old and she looked very puzzled, then asked me why I was wearing shorts. πI ran 2K first at around a 6 min/km pace to warm up and took a quick break. Then I attempted my 1K speed challenge for this week. I pushed really hard and was completely pooped at the end of the kilometre. My previous attempt was a time of 4:55, which I thought would be very hard to beat. I did a time today for 1K of 4:30. I was amazed and exhausted at the same time. After a break to catch my breath i set off again to run the remaining 2K home. Altogether I did a time of 28:06. My times were 6:05, 6:05, 4:30, 5:57, 5:26. I am feeling great. Now for a shower and a nice relaxing cup of coffee.
I did my 5k yesterday chasing a ball round a hockey pitch. My captain lent me to the opposition, who were short. My inherited team then got thrashed 7-0. I ought to stick to running ..... π
