50 minutes

Hiya,

Today was my long run of the week and today was for the first time 50 minutes. No fartleks today, but still Jeffing it at 4:30 / 0:30.

Between 5 and 10 minutes I was joined by 2 other runners who ran a very slightly bit faster than me. First they were behind me, then next to me and then before me. I must say though I was happy when they took another road, because I have difficulties keeping to my own pace when hearing and seeing some else run so close.

Between 10 and 15 minutes I crossed to other runners who were of the opinion they needed the whole path (only 2 people fit on the path side by side) and refused to go run after one another to pass me. So I had to run nearly in the soppy grass because they did not want to stop their conversation for 2 seconds...

Still running and I find I have run rather fast for me, but I felt good. Maybe I am just getting faster? Whatever it is, the run is going good!

40 minutes and oh crap, the faster pace caught up with me. I am getting seriously tired and my legs want to take a nap. Just bite through it!

So the last 10 minutes were done purely on character and I cursed myself several times for not having kept my pace calm. Problem is, I don't really feel it when I run faster than what is 'normal' for me.

Anyhow, I did it. 50 minutes dusted and done. 5,79 km in 50 minutes. Now come 2 week runs of 30 minutes and then again a run of 50 minutes. Let's see how I will cope with my second 50 minutes...

Cheers, Evy

It is a small park 1 street from my home, but it has some nice views ☺

You are doing brilliantly. It was a good run, even if you feel you misjudged the pace it’s still all learning for us newbies. (+Even if forced off the path today... how inconsiderate they were.)

in reply toGailXrunning

Yeah I still need to learn to feel my pace. Maybe I ought to look on my watch to check my pace, but when running I want to run, not look at my watch the whole time. How to learn eh... time and experience I guess ☺. And yes, I found them indeed very inconsiderate. Too bad there are regularly such kinds of people...

Well done your doing brill. Your time is good as well. Not far of 6km as well👏😀

in reply toDoris8

I was surprisd about the distance, I was kinda keeping 6,5 km in sight for 60 minutes. But there is a chance it might be a bit more! Very curious to see where the 60 minutes will bring me, which will be in about 1 month ☺

Hi when you’re doing the Jeffing ratio 4:30/0:30 are you not always looking at your watch all the time , does the timer on watch not annoy you. I tried it with shorter Jeffing ratio and I found I was forgetting what was run and what was the walk part. Might have a look at that ratio you have it on . It might help with the walking part not so much pressure on my back with all running 😀

I bought me a Gymboss, an interval timer which I wear o my other wrist. You enter the 2 intervals in it and the number of iterations and it beeps and / or vibrates when you have to switch. Verrry handy thingy. I love it!

Ok thanks will have a look I know you can put interval timers on your garmin. Tried run walk on my garmin but was forever checking it.

in reply toDoris8

I tried it 1 time but can't remember why I did not do it anymore. Think my watch had a fluke that day in the gps and I was scared the timer had influenced the gps. I used my phone and an interval app then, but the shocking made the app malfunction regularly. This Gymboss is really great. Can't miss out on the switch between 2 intervals 😁

Great stuff. Don't be tempted to get to 60 minutes too soon. Just think you will have all those miles under your belt in 4 weeks time so you won't be pushing too hard when you get there. Have fun.

in reply toRennur

No no, I am more or less following Juju's Magic Plan to get to 60 minutes. I keep to 30 minutes for the week runs and then every other weekend I increase the long run with 5 minutes. I think / hope that is not too fast? The main thing I have to keep in mind is to run SLOW, something I seem to have problems with the last 2 weeks. I just don't feel it if I go slow or fast, ending up in exhaustion at the end. Will definitely need to learn how to 'feel' my pace...

You will find your baseline pace. Increasing by 5 minutes per fortnight is ideal. I did the same, plus it gets you more miles under the belt for stamina. Not too long now - be patient. Sounds like you're being sensible.

Thank you ☺

Well done on keeping going when the going got tough!! Look forward to hearing how the next one goes.. My annoyance when running is people who let their dogs jump up or around me.. frightens me ..and slows me down😠

in reply tosparky66

I like dogs (as long as they are on a leash when I run past them), though it depends on the dog. Had a BIG hound jump up against me and lick me straight in the face a few years ago. That was weird 😂. And a former neighbour had this big dog who lots of people were scard off, but who was just a big softy who looked intimidating. When she broke out of their yard, I did not doubt a second to run after her and get her back

But today I think I was very lucky. I passed a house where someone just came out of the door with 2 small exploded puffballs. As I passed they pulled their leashes to get to me and yapped like crazy. I honestly think that if they had been loose, I'd have needed stitches in my calves or so...

I agree with you, it would put me off too having runners near by and distract me from my pace. How rude that the other pair of runners wouldn’t make room for you! No matter how riveting a chat maybe that’s no excuse for bad manners! 😡

The Fartlek method sounds like it’s working well for you. Well done 😀

Loving the photo!

in reply toIndielass00

Thanks and yeah, I guess when you're more settled in your running you can run without getting distracted by the steps of other runners. But I am not there yet and I was unconsciously trying to match their pace. Big no no!

I can relate, I have a competitive side. That’s one of the many reasons I run solo 😂
