AccuWeather hates me! It keeps telling me lies.

This morning’s watery sunshine has given way to depressing grey murk. It’s mid-afternoon, about 3 degrees outside, but it’s not going to rain. I checked before leaving the house and AccuWeather said “no precipitation for 120 minutes”.

Tights, two long sleeved tops, buff, gloves and buff sun-visor and I’m off out.

I’ve had a bit of a back twinge the last few days brought on by my dismal attempts at Yoga with Adriene. I’ve also had a slightly tight right quad and left glute. I don't want to aggravate anything so I decide I’m going to Jeff this one - run for 900m, walk for 100m repeat 10 times. You decide if it’s cheating or not.

I still have my ELO playlist going, but I’m also using “Run With Joanie”- a 65 minute guided run from Nike Run Club. I really enjoyed this one and I’d use it again.

Two minutes into my run and “Hmm - that felt like rain!”. A minute later and I feel it again. Another minute and yes its definitely raining. Well more like heavy fine drizzle. You know – the sort where it rains upwards! 🌧.

So much for AccuWeather! 🤬

After last Sunday’s debacle, I was determined not to let it get the better of me today. My aim was to reach 10k by the end of January and today is my last chance.

Despite the drizzle I’m warming up a bit so I remove the gloves and push up my sleeves a bit. That’s better!

The drizzle is getting steadily worse through the course of my run and after 5.5km I pass the entrance to the Leisure Centre but I’m not entering yet. I have further to run today so I carry on along the road towards the bottom of the road past the Rugby Club where I did my Speed Challenge. By now I can barely see out of my glasses but I keep them on as the only place they can go is in my tights pocket with my phone and I don’t want them to get scratched. At least the rain is keeping me cool today. That’s a positive right?

I reach 6.5km and just before I turn to retrace my steps back towards the Leisure Centre I pause briefly to take a photograph of the parish church in the heavy drizzle. It comes out really well considering the dismal light.

Just to be contrary, I do a double lap of the Leisure Centre counter-clockwise. Hopefully there’ll be no bad karma as a result 😁🤞

Run With Joanie finishes – I’ve really enjoyed listening to that. I try to set it going again to keep me company on the final part of my run but NRC isn’t playing ball. In the process my earbuds stop talking to my phone so now I’ve got no music either. I fiddle for a bit whilst still trying to complete my final lap and my pace drops as a result. I give up and stuff my phone back in my pocket.

Bad karma maybe? 🤷‍♀‍

I try to increase the pace a bit for the final km to make up some time. By now my legs are feeling quite tired – it’s a long time since I’ve been on my feet for this long. I reach 10k and carry on for a bit to reach the corner of the street where I stop my watch.

I’m soaked through, tired but happy 😁. The splits are a little messy but this run gives me my 10k for January and a PB by a few seconds shy of 7 minutes.

Congratulations, brilliant run. Sounds like you were in a rebellious mood today - running around the leisure centre counter-clockwise ! Whatever your mood it was obviously great for your running!

Rebellious - and yes very determined not to let the weather get the better of me.Weirdly I enjoyed being out there in the wet today - a little bit masochistic maybe? Us runners are strange creatures aren't we?

Absolutely!

That’s a brilliant run, Diane! In spite of the inaccurate accuweather forecast, you stuck to your plan and ended up victorious, shaving almost 7 minutes off your previous 10K time. That’s HUGE, well done 👏👏👏🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️👍

Well, once you’re soaked, you can’t get any wetter! I’ve only got really soaked through once and the hot shower when I got back home was divine 🚿. If I wear my lightweight waterproof jacket at least it keeps my top half dry. But of course you believed the forecast 😂.

You must be very pleased with your second 10K! 10 miles, next, maybe? 🤔

Thanks Julia! I wasn't going for a PB or anything today - I just wanted to meet my target of getting back to running a10k before the end of the month. Skin of the teeth and all that! I was determined not to let the weather get the better of me today.

10 miles? 🤔 Never say never, but I think I'll spend a bit of time bedding in at 10k before taking things any further.

Haha, I was just kidding, well, maybe not completely kidding, these things take planning, but now’s the time for basking in the glory of your new 10K PB 😊 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️👍

Basking I am indeed! 😁

What a fabulous run! Congratulations on your January 10k AND you smashed your target with a PB 🎯. You superstar ⭐. I'm not surprised you are happy! The photo is gorgeous - it really did come out well. It looks like a beautiful part of the country. Enjoy resting up this evening 😊.

Thanks Delly-dot. I wasn't gunning for a PB at all, I just wanted to reach 10k again this month so that was a nice bonus.I must take another pic of the church in better weather - I always meant to last summer, but I never did for some reason.

Great run for you today Birdlady64, nevermind the weather forecast, in my area they said it might snow, it actually rained, then they said it wouldn't snow, it did, anyway, well done on that 10K run, soaked through but happy, that's the main thing 🏃🏾😊

Thanks Al!

Never trust the weather forecast! There's no way the weather was going to beat me today. Now I feel very virtuous, and very victorious! 💪 😁

Congratulations!! Fabulous! On such a rainy day. Afraid I ducked out this weekend. Well done you xxx

Thanks! You're entitled to duck out once in a while. I may have thought twice myself if I'd known how wet it was going to be. But having gone out there it was do or die.

Congratulations Birdlady64 on your 10K. You were on a mission! Thanks for sharing the photo, such a quaint church. Looks lovely

Birdlady64 profile image
Birdlady64Graduate10 in reply to Indielass00

Thanks Indielass. A mission indeed it was today! I was pretty determined out there this afternoon. I always meant to stop and take a photo of the Church in summer as I used to pass by there most runs. Why I decided to do it today in such appalling weather I've no idea.

Really well done for getting through that run and grabbing a PB too! 👏👏👏 I really admire your determination and especially so considering the army of gremlins you fought! Bravo 👏 I also went out fora 10k today and got caught by that freezing rain in my shorts and t shirt 🥶

Fabulous!! now you can sprint into February with a little rest 😀 what a good run despite the rain and i’ve found on longer runs things run out whether it’s the playlist or batteries Hope you were soon nice and dry

The photo is more beautiful for being crystal clear

Excellent work on the 10K 👏🏼

Wait, why the bad karma?? Not deserved I’m sure. AccuWeather has let me down on occasion too but generally I’ve been bowled over been it’s accuracy. I heard all weather reporting has generally been less reliable during the pandemic because the aren’t many planes in the sky to collect weather data.

Beautifully atmospheric pic so the rain was a teeny bit worth it ☺️💦

I use the BBC, MetOffice and NetWeather.

Well done on the 10km in trying conditions.

Thanks.Actually in hindsight I think AccuWeather was probably technically correct as it was more like really low cloud than proper rain.

I've always found AccuWeather to be a bit like Ronseal - until recently that is.

Great going Birdlady, well done on squeezing that 10k in before January was out! Great descriptive run, was with you all the way on that 😊. Sometimes I think running in the rain gives us a greater sense of achievement and has the cooling factor too 🌧️ I can't run in my specs though they just steam up!

Birdlady64 profile image
Birdlady64Graduate10 in reply to Runjilly

Thanks Runjilly - it just had to be done. I do quite enjoy running in the rain in a weird masochistic kind of a way. The glasses are an occupational hazard - makes think I should really try contact lenses

Great run Birdlady, so nice to bring home that PB to round off your month, congratulations, 🥳🎉🤗

Well done Diane, despite the weather, and tech playing up again ☹ you smashed that PB, i remember an early 10k in very heavy rain, was faster 🌧🤣, at the moment, i'm going the other way, 1 hour, 25 mins, compared to 1 hour, 19 mins, my fastest 🤷‍♂️.

Birdlady64 profile image
Birdlady64Graduate10 in reply to Peter44

Thanks Peter. I was just happy to get another 10k under my belt. I wasn't going for a PB - but thought it might be a possibility based on how my recent runs have been going. I wrote that off when the rain set in - so it was a nice bonus and a great way to finish off the month.I'm sure you'll be getting speedier runs in again soon - especially if the weather bucks up a bit

Me and speedy dont really go together 🤣 but i'm quite happy with my slowish pace, just need to rest a niggly hip pain, maybe till next weekend, will do some slow walks instead.

Oh I hope the hip settles down. Probably wise to rest it for a few days. Walking is a great way to keep ticking along in the meantime. 👍
