Up at 6 AM for an early run, and looked outside at the weather. Rain, agh .
I was up so couldn't give up now.
Running gear on, headphones on, gloves, rainproof jacket (well that's what the label said) and running shoes on. Phone I use for running strapped to my arm so out the front door. Damn, forgot my Fitbit (a nice xmas present ), oh, and my key. Cannot knock and wake everyone else up yet so no going back.
It was raining a bit harder than I realised so I was in for a wet one.
I started my warm up walk and less than a minute in and the rain got a bit heavier. Why did I not stay in bed?
Two minutes in and my rain proof jacket had admitted defeat and I could feel the rain running down my back.
Three minutes in, sod this, I am starting my run, I am not staying out in this a minute longer than I have to.
It is dark but the street lights are good on this stretch but the rain is making it hard to see.
As I go around a corner towards then end of my 5K there is a gap in the street lights and I can hardly see a thing so slow down a bit but too late. Slippery leaves and a plastic bag had me hit the floor with a bang. The cold, the impact and the shock meant I literally could not move for what seemed like ages. I finally drew my arms towards me and then tried to stand. No serious damage as far as I could tell but everything hurt. I was finally upright and was hoping it was rain and not blood I could feel running down me. As I gingerly stepped forwards I kicked something that slid across the path. Yes, that was my phone! Luckily its an old one I just use for running and it is now rather scratched. It is usually a hell of a job getting out of the arm band so how it came out I don't know.
Slowly walked the rest of the way home with every step seeming to jar something on my body.
I knocked on the door and then burst into tears when my husband finally answered.
Other than grazes and a few bruises I think I am OK. More than can be said for my gloves, jacket and joggers, all got holes in. My phone still works but looks a bit sorry for itself too. I am only glad I didn't have my new Fitbit, I would be gutted to have damaged that,
As the day has gone on some bits have stopped hurting and others started. I think it is going to be a few days before I am able to venture out again.
I can remember when I last had a fall like that, if ever. Not something I want to repeat. Please be careful everyone.
Sorry about your fall, the worst thing about any fall is the effects you will feel for the next few days if not longer, I hope nothing serious happens, don't run again until everything heals.
Oh 🤕 ouch GottaImprove, that sounded sooo graphic, the main thing is your ok 👍 but if you're going to consider another run before it's fully light, I'd be shopping for a headtorch! They needn't be expensive, but it'll save you a tumble.
Oh no, I really feel for you, I hope you dont take too long to recover, take plenty painkillers so you can get a good nights rest, I you have arnica - use it. Time to start saving up for a running light. Take care 🤗🥰
So sorry to hear about that! Be prepared to be even more sore tomorrow in places that took the shock of the fall (upper body, shoulders, etc). Keep well and warm!
Ooh ouch indeed GI! That sounds really nasty - doesn’t it all happen quickly? One second you’re upright and the next, that’s it! I hope you’re ok and the bumps and bruises fade quickly!
Oh sorry you've taken a tumble. It's such a shock when something like that happens. Just take care and don't run again until you feel better. Get yourself a headtorch 🤗
I second the head torch. i use my beanie hat with a torch built in that I walk my dogs with as I'm out early morning when its still dark and its dark when i finish work, so worth their weight in gold. I also got myself a chest torch the other day which was on offer on Amazon and its brilliant. Wouldn't be without either of them, they both light up so far infront, its much better. 🏃♀️
I was laughing at the beginning of your post when you talked about your wet proof jacket not being so rain proof after all, but then when I heard about your fall, oh blimey, that sounds horrendous and so painful. The blinking weather is a real pain isn't it. I am trying to judge my run when I think the ice has melted but have been caught out by black ice before, and yep it really hurts when you go over.
A few have mentioned getting a head torch, i just wanted to say, they're not expensive but soooo worth it. You might even want to look at some of the beanie hats that have head torches built in, which is what I have. I walk my dogs in the dark in rural countryside and the light is so good it is bright enough for me to see really clearly quite a way ahead and was only about £7.00.
Thanks for everyone's concern. I have a few bruises and grazes and aches and pains but luckily not too badly hurt. I will definitely be looking into the head torch idea but will probably avoid going out in rain that heavy again. On a positive noe, my husband has suggested a new jacket as mine is nt that water proof and now has a couple of holes in it. Who am I to complain!!
