Winter is well and truly here. I don't know what it is like with you guys but here where I live it has been freezing for a few days. Properly freezing, and anytime the Ice has started to melt, within an hour or two the temperature has gone below zero shortly afterwards. As a result there is a mix of ice and compacted snow which is again ice. So the paths around me are very very slippery. It is too dangerous to run. So I have been walking 5K for the past few days. But even that is very slippery in places. I made an attempt to go out yesterday evening and gave up after a couple of minutes. It was -7 last night, but I'll definitely get out later and at least walk it. I am attempting 5K everyday for January. I was walking one day and running the next, but due to the Ice I have been walking for the past few days. I'll walk 7K today and tomorrow so as to help make up for yesterday. My aim is to have 155 km's done by the end of the month. 35 done and 120 to go.
Anyway, we are running, jogging and walking, we are still exercising. When so many fellow parkrunners have stopped running we have all continued on, not only that but we have new people joining us every week which is fantastic. If your reading this for the first time, welcome. All you have to do is Jog, Walk or Run (and any combination of the 3) for 5K at your own pace and pop back here under this thread afterwards and let us all know how you got on. So a quick little breakfast for me and I'll be on my way. Looking forward to reading the replies and catching up later. Happy running or walking,
Damien

Hi Damien, glad to hear that your challenge for January is going well. I too have not run for a few days in part due to the slippy paths and also because I have had a touch of what I think was food poisoning. I am hoping to run here tomorrow because the temperature is going to be higher. My last run was on Tuesday and I did a Jeff 5k in 37.12. Stay safe everyone and happy running or walking.
Good for you getting out regardless Damien, and extra good for you being careful and staying safe. This weather is miserable. ๐
Having said that, my trusty little road-free common has done me proud for RED January. Iโve been able to run every day, and today I braved the thick fog and did my 5k in a totally unremarkable time of 38:19. Iโm not even attempting faster running in this cold and my mantra to myself still stands - keep running enjoyable. ๐๐ป
Good morning Damien, good luck for your running and walking 5K every day in January.
This morning I ran my 30th (not) parkrun and your 43rd virtual parkrun in similar conditions as you described in your post, my time was 39.00 in a temperature of
- 6C, I was quite happy to get a sub 40 minute 5K, I had to be careful that I didn't fall, good news, milder weather is on the way, +7C by Tuesday.
The minimum temperature where I live in Central Scotland was - 8C around 7am, I waited until 9.30 before starting my 30th not parkrun by which time it was less cold at - 6C, my time was 39.00 which is 8 minutes 44 seconds slower than the last time I ran in that same temperature at Drumpellier Parkrun on November 30. 2019, I had to be careful this morning due to snow and ice. I just hope once the snow and ice has gone I can get back to a sub 35 minute 5K as most of them were before the cold spell.
I'm sure you will Al. When I went out on the icy paths on Thursday evening my pace was much slower than usual but it's back to normal now it's all gone. I can't imagine our parkrun happening if were ever that temperature here.
Very well done Al. Iโm going to run tomorrow. The paths have improved. Itโs very cold but itโs good for my home made beer which is conditioning out in my garage. Well done for running and talking it easy with a sub 40 minute 5K time.
No running for me either! After a load of wet slushy snow yesterday (which I cleared off the drive last thing) we had a really hard freeze overnight. It is starting to thaw now; bright sunshine and cloudless sky in fact, but with a mixture of ice and water around, I will not be venturing forth; looks dodgy for walking and running is out of the question! Oh well, indoor exercises will have to do. Happy safe running to those who do venture forth. โ๏ธ
I walked to a shop to buy birdseed, a return trip of 6K. I stepped it out. Did 5K even with the ice in 46 minutes, 2 minutes slower than my normal 5K walks. I needed a shower once I got home.
On Sunday morning I went a 15K walk/9.3 miles, most of snow and ice has gone but in several 'cold spots' there are still some stubborn rutted icy patches, hopefully with milder temperatures they will soon go, I hope you enjoyed your 5K run this afternoon Damien. ๐ ๐๐พ
Quite warm here then, -1 degree, but very little ice thankfully. It was quite misty over the fields. We did our normal run followed by normal 2nd breakfast.
This also counted towards the FunRun5 which is now fully virtual due to enhanced restrictions in Lanzarote as from yesterday.
Hello fellow (not) parkrunners! Itโs a beautiful day in Lincolnshire after a very foggy day yesterday, although it was pretty cold overnight and has still only reached the balmy heights of 1 degree. I have been doing yoga for the first time ever, following the example of so many of you VRBs and following Adrieneโs latest 30 day programme. So with hips well and truly wrecked after todayโs so called Snuggle ๐ I ventured out rather later than usual to allow time for the ice to melt for day 9 of RED January, again taking to grass verges and crisscrossing into the sunny patches. A decent 32.08 this week. Take care in the cold!
My knee's still not up for running yet. It's feeling better, but there's no way I want to undo any healing. I may do a gentle walk later this afternoon with herself. It won't be 5km, though.
Relatively balmy at -1ยฐ down here compared to further north! Still out of sync with my runs so my (not) parkrun was yesterday - managing to maintain my sub-30s at 29.48. Today an enjoyable 5k walk.
Hi Damien, pretty dam chilly here too but no snow, and no icy puddles left on the prom by the time Dexy5 and I set off for our 5k (not) parkrun slalom this morning (or maybe afternoon). Nice gentle run in company in around 33 minutes, takeaway coffee and pulled pork baguette to follow (Dexy's posted separately above). Hope your conditions improve soon, good commitment to do 5k every day somehow. Getting your lad out with you?
Stay safe - our numbers are getting rather scary just now. But I reckon keeping the running going is a pretty good way of reducing vulnerability ๐ค
Fresh air and healthy exercise is safe. Just stay away from crowds, keep your exposure to others to a minimum and we will be fine. I walked to pick up birdseed earlier. 6K return. I stepped it out, needed a shower when I got home, so many layers. Well done on your run. Pulled pork baguette sounds yummy.Oisin did not come with me. Instead his mum took him and his brother to the park to break ice on puddles. They of course got destroyed.๐
Hi there Damienair and virtual (not) park runners. It's cold and grey here but no ice.I had a lovely run today. Normal sort of route, no dramas .There were quite a few walkers on the pavement to get around but lots of thanks from them for giving them a wide birth and some even moved for me. ! _Maybe because I look like a mad woman running along in just t shirt and capris with a bright pink jacket around my waist_not a pretty sight but I can run and I love it.
Anyway, basically I got to the end to find I had done a pb in both 10k and 5k. As usual the last 5k was fastest at 30:06 so close but no cigar ! But so pleased!
Hope the ice starts to clear soon selse where so that everyone else can get out and run too!
Hi Damien, bit late today as getting the Christmas tree packed up and put back in the garage for another year.Yes, it's been freezing here too. We had one day of freezing fog, one day of frozen paths and another day of frozen paths covered in snow and then it was gone. Today is just cold, damp and fairly miserable but we had a short interval of lighter freezing fog which coincided with our (not)parkrun (of course!). I did actually go for runs in the snow and ice. It's the first time I've dared do that and I actually found it better than walking, maybe my footing is more decisive when I run??? But when I did my cool down walk afterwards I definitely felt more unsteady.
Back to my ordinary running shoes now as George & Harry Bailey are being cleaned up and packed away with the decorations until next December. I will miss them - they were a lot of fun.
This week was (as usual) faster than expected. A week of RED January running and my legs and body are holding up ok so far (*touch wood*). I think combining it with Adriene yoga may be helping here. Having said that, the fog does nothing for your lungs when you're breathing fast, so it felt more of a battle than last week and I can't say I particularly enjoyed it. 27:58, so a shade slower than last week.
Next week it sounds like we'll all be in our wet weather gear rather than compression vests, so Goretex at the ready chaps and have a good one ๐
Iโd love to get sub 28 even in ideal conditions. My 5k PB was a very long time ago and I havenโt even done a sub 30 for months, so good going ๐๐ป๐๐ป
Heโs said it all so I will just say, well done on your 5k of running or walking each day damienair. Youโll feel a lot better for it with working from home.
Yesterday for my (not)parkrun I decided to walk to the outskirts of town and buy some bird seed for the little birdies in my back garden. 3K out and 3K back. Paths were still icy and it was risky in spots. I stepped it out and needed a shower when I got back. I usually walk 5K in 44 mins, it took me 46 mins with the ice and snow. Today I got out and ran 5K. The paths are wet now. All the ice is gone. So more running this week.
Hi Damien, I keep forgetting to post as my longer runs are in the week...๐คฆ๐ปโโ๏ธ๐คท๐ปโโ๏ธ
So last Tuesday I ran a โstraightโ 5km...Strava gave me a PR of 47:40. I entered this as a local (not) Park Run (sorted by age grade %, I was6/7 in our local group).
Thursday I ran 5.5km as part of the Magic Plan...but had a tech malfunction, just 3km got recorded on Strava ๐ฌ๐
