Now I remember why I run first thing.

Firstly -because if I just fall out of bed and straight into my running gear and straight out the door- I’m in the swing of it before my head has time to make excuses

Secondly -once I’ve eaten I seem to be 5 times heavier

Thirdly -I don’t like dodging people - yeeuk!!!

And I am so slow!!! About 1 minute plus slower per km than when I run first thing.

I got up and straight into my gear this morning , came downstairs, headphones on and opened the front door just as the heavens opened. Now I don’t mind a bit of rain but this was monsoon weather!! It was bouncing straight up again when it hit the floor and I just couldn’t do it!! I came back in and, in fairness to me, I just changed my top for a sweatshirt and my trainers for slippers but I DID keep the leggings and sports bra on.... just in case...

Then I had breakfast as I am always starving when I wake up and no sooner had I eaten a large bowl of porridge than... the sun came out!!! Ok, I’ll wait till it goes down and I’ll go out and run. But whenever I stood up to go ...down it came again.

The Met Office App on my phone kept sending me” Yellow warming of wind and rain” updates at regular intervals which put me off even more and I had nearly decided not to run at all then just before 3 it looked okay- sun was out, the ground had dried up and I thought it’s now or never.

Should have gone with never I think because it was a dreadful run. I felt so heavy and tired and could hardly get myself moving. Usually once I get going I have to make a conscious effort to slow down so I don’t burn out. Well I’d burnt out getting off the couch!! I intended to do 8k today and just about managed 3.25k!!! I headed out for my normal route up towards the Park and just couldn’t face the incline so turned the other way and decided to run round the Park instead and then along the Tarka Trail towards Braunton.

I got halfway round the Park and then cut across the path which makes the middle of the figure of 8 and just doubled back towards town. Ran towards civic centre intending to go along the Trail but ended up just turning off and running towards home. Couldn’t even manage 4k!!

I’ve slept well, hydrated well, eaten healthily, the last couple of days and even had 2 days rest between runs instead of usual 1. I can only put it down to the time of day just doesn’t suit me. So it looks like I’m going to have to drag my lardy arse out earlier next time.

Oh well even a bad run is a run I suppose. ( I tell other people that but I’m not convincing myself much 🤣)

Draw a line under it and move on. Now I’m sat with my tabby cat beside me, eating my sausage casserole, in my PJs, watching Children of Dune. 😁 much better!!

I find it easier to give advice than to apply it to my runs too! 😆 Anyway as you say - it was a run. ✅ Move on! Forecast for the weekend not looking great here.

Nor here.its my sons birthday on Saturday and I’d promised him a trip to Plymouth,we were going to have tea and scones on the Hoe, and then round the trip off with a visit to Rogers Wholesalers ( always come home with a bootful of bargains from there). But it’s not looking hopeful. 😭

I hope you have a good day however much you manage. It’ll be lovely to see your son. Mine is in New York and we should have seen him twice this year already. He’d hoped to be over at Christmas instead but that’s looking doubtful now. 🤨

Oh I know how you feel. My grandson is in Australia and I haven’t seen him for 4 years. He was supposed to over for Dec2020-jan ‘21. For his birthday and Christmas but that’s not looking likely now and next year is a big year exam-wise so prob not then either.

Oh that’s a long time and they change so much! My grandchildren are a bit younger but live very close and fairly close!! Whether we even get to spend Christmas with them . . . . 🤞🏻

A run is a run. It sounds like you are a morning person like me. I really don’t want to run in the afternoon but you did it so well done. 👏👏🏃🏻‍♀️

Yup. I’ve wound down by the afternoon and lost my mojo.

I’m with you limberlou, I prefer to run first thing and have my breakfast feeling smug that I’ve done it! But I don’t blame you for not going out in a downpour! As you say - a run is a run and you deserve your sausage casserole!

This is so me ... if I don’t run first thing I may as well not bother. I wholeheartedly agree with the out the door before eyes open and brain catches on approach . The darker mornings have really messed with me as I start work at 9am with a 40 minute commute so I’ve had to move my runs to a Monday ( late start day) and a Saturday (day off) to get enough daylight to get out there. I’ve also begun a membership with my local gym just so I can use the treadmill for a midweek run but must admit I do find that a bit monotonous . I have tried going out late afternoon instead, but find I’m tired, sluggish and end up making excuses and not going at all. Well done for giving it a go despite your misgivings - a 3k run is better than no run at all!!

I eve bought a dreadmill last winter and I managed 10 mins on it before I gave up. I’m selling it now.

I’m the same way - morning runs are always better for me than afternoon runs but you got out and did it so whoohoo! You’ve done better than me this week! On to the next run now.

Yes, this exactly! I envy the people that have the option of running at any time of the day! But I thought this had to do with running experience/fitness.

Sounds like it’s more a metabolism kind of thing?

Probably. I’m full of beans early in the morning but sluggish after about 3ish. And then I perk up again about 10 at night. Probably all those years of working in pubs and hotels

Oh dear that didn't sound good. But never mind, it will make the next one all the sweeter.

You should be proud of yourself getting any running done today, I took the dog out first thing this morning and got absolutely soaked, he was none to impressed either....definitely not running weather out there today....sausage casserole sounds much more tempting 😋

Oh I sneaked my run in YESTERDAY- wouldn’t have gone out today!!! And I’m not sure I’m going tomorrow either!!! I did creep out for a walk but got rained on this afternoon so it didn’t last long.
