Virtual Cornwall (lejog5) - with combine harvester!

So I set off on LeJog tonight, just over 5 miles covered between a short walk and 5k run.

The sun was starting to set as I headed out, but I decided it was just light enough to have a quick trot around some of my favourite fields as long as I planned a lit route home again. I felt I was cutting it a bit fine as the light faded, but it just about worked out OK, was glad for the streetlights on the last stretch and I really hope my new running lights arrive soon!

It was worth it to be out in the countryside again; I saw a buzzard flying overhead, some seriously speedy squirrels bouncing ahead and a few bats. A bit sad that my favourite sunflower field had now been plowed under and fertilised - and I have to say it was not the most pleasant air to take deep breaths of! Nice (and somehow appropriate for virtual Cornwall) to see a combine harvester at work in the fields, looking very dramatic in the evening light. And to cap it all off, a huge moon was rising as I came back home.

I took it nice and steady, feeling comfortable aerobically but still struggling a bit with my calves - I am starting to suspect my insoles are correcting my overpronation a bit too much which is causing strain on the inner calf. I will have to experiment a bit and perhaps consult the podiatrist again. It's hopefully going to be easier to change insoles than try to change my gait though, so it's good to have a possible solution identified.

It seems a long way to go to John O'Groats but all in all it was a lovely run, if they're all like this it will be a pleasurable journey.

Oh well done. I’m a morning runner (I think, as runner newbie haven’t experienced much else) but your posts makes evening runs seem so attractive!!!

Greetings from my LEJOG4 to your LEJOG5!!! There seem to be a whole new wave of runners catching up on us!!! 😳

Having a child who wakes at 6.30 (on a good day), evenings are my main chance to run. It was lovely in the summer when the evenings were cool and light, but the nights are closing in and I can see I'm going to get a bit fed up of pounding the pavements in the dark, so I might have to experiment with daytime instead!

Lovely start to your challenge all round. Yes LEJOG is a long way I think it’s stamina and support on here that’s going to help. Enjoy the challenge! 👍

This morning I got out a map and put a blob of bluetak on it to mark my progress. It does look a very very very long way done like that - but as with C25k, one run at a time and lots of mutual support and we will get there!

LEJOG3 here, it is a long way, I’m just about at Inverness but I can feel the excitement of our leading group as they finish. It’s been quite a journey but I’ve enjoyed most of it. The nights drawing in made me accelerate my finishing goal. I use several different pairs of trainers which I think has helped with aches and pains. Good luck to you and all the other LEJOGgers. Enjoy.

Great work getting to Inverness! I can imagine you'd want to try and finish early given the option. Part of my motivation for doing this is to help motivate me to keep running during the winter, but I'm aware there may be days that just aren't good for running. That said, it's nice to know that if I'm lagging behind I'll have the summer to catch up and get to the end!

Interesting on varying trainers; I'm just trying some goretex trail shoes for muddy winter runs, and it would be good if they also helped with my calves!

Yes I have two Merrell that have gortex, both trail shoes, Altra, also a trail shoe, that has a big toebox but little or no heel drop and some Brooks that I got for the gym before they shut! Different ones cause different aches and pains so I keep alternating them, trying to also utilise their various strengths. Grass with dew, gortex, pavement Brooks etc etc. I think if wasn’t trying for 100 miles a week I wouldn’t have such a problem 😂
