I guess everyone in the world knows that Garmin was down... and is back up... well, kinda. We can sync runs again 😎
I’ve been following a Garmin coach HM plan... and today there was no run in my watch to do. It transpires that we cannot sync our workouts onto watches yet as they are restricting some services to manage the load on their servers as millions of devices sync a week of data.
So what do I do with myself. I needed a run... and I figured it was time to see what I had in the legs. My best 5k this year was 30:57 and 31:03 on Strava... it was time to take that down. 5 minute warmup walk and it was go time. Using 30:57 as my virtual partners time I’d have been happy to beat that... had to get a lead as the roads were a little damp and there’s a steep descent in the first mile. Before I got to the top of that I was 20 seconds ahead... by the bottom it was nearing a minute. I’d been on target for sub 30 last week before hitting the wrong button... there was no way I was touching that watch today! At one point it was predicting 26:50ish... and I was feeling good... then quick walk to get between parked cars while walkers came the other way, twice, and off again, then covidiots (you know why let anyone else have any pavement? There’s 6 of us and we will walk side by side) and a slightly longer walk, on a bend so road not an option. And off we go again... and done. Garmin says 28:17... Strava 28:03. I’ve always loved Strava 🤣 but now I’m thinking how much lower that time would have been if there was nobody walking the other way... and that made me miss lockdown! Anyways... feeling good about it now... and I need to be 4 seconds quicker next time I try this!
Happy running.

Thanks. I guess they be a couple more days before turning the restricted features back on and coaching works again. I can’t complain really, I had 4 of the plan runs in my watch when they went down, so only just ran out.
Shouldn’t be too long now. I’m using Garmin coach too and only had runs up until Tuesday on my watch. Today’s run came through for me over the last few days so I think the feature is back but not yet got to all users.
The current status page says that workouts are now fully working and Coach may experience delays in assigning workouts, so I think that’s good enough to work, just analysis and next week’s run that may be a little slow... but we should be back to having 6 days workouts on the watch so the delays won’t affect us. I’m not unpausing until the weekend... I don’t think 5k hard needs following with speed repeats 😂 So I cant state that I’m 100% correct.
I’m hoping coach will return before the weekend... so could be a while before I get the chance to deliberately go for it again... of course then there’s his tempo runs!!
Well done on your speedy run UNM. I often ask myself why I am always the one to move to the other side of the pavement ir into the road. I think it’s because I’m always looking ahead so I can see people coming while others are on their phones or just talking to each other. Many Family groups doNt see the need to drop into pairs so other pas by. But hey it’s good to get out. 😷
From behind I can part these people like Moses did the Red Sea (allegedly) with a well timed cough! No chance when heading at them though, I have to start taking evasive action before that sweet spot 🤣
It was so good to get out... and kinda nice to be off plan for a few days. Race predictor now says I could 5k in 23:41 so obviously Garmin are still having issues 🤣
That’s a time to be proud of, i must find out how to pace against a past time to see how i’m doing, that sounds great, i got a fitness year younger during Garmin down time and am happy it’s sort of back
Flaming people in the middle of the path not sure why but a lot of dog walkers just stand in the middle for us to run round
I say if they stand in the middle, run a lap round them before continuing on!
Thanks. On my watch it was in options under training... set a target. Or of course you could do it with pace alerts, or even the pacepro option (when they turn that back on)
Thanks. The annoying thing was I managed to navigate the town centre without issue... it was heading back out when the “fun” started. I need a parkrun or some closed roads!!
That’s amazing! I had my ‘race’ on Sunday so have now finished my Garmin coach plan. I managed to get the video about carrying on and what to do next. It advises waiting a few weeks before starting a new plan. I think I’m going to try a 10K one. I ran 15k on my longest run even for a 5k plan. But I think that was because of the coach I chose.
Makes sense to me... Nike plans take you up to 10 miles for 5k, it’s pretty normal, the endurance really helps... 10k will have you around HM distance on the long run.
I went with Greg, for no particular reason!
Well done completing that plan. I’m thinking that going up the distances a break is good... not so sure about coming back down, I want to do the 5k one next, so I’d have way too many weekly miles going into it.
I've just found out I might have very little to do in October so just maybe I can REALLY focus on training - and after over four years of trying bag the 5 in 30
I think it will be a much calmer life from here on Apart from getting older and more decrepit, I think I'll avoid anything that is likely to bang my head again, I really don't want to have to wear a pirate patch 😅
Lol, last time I was at a Fancy Dress party, way too much booze was served.
You haven't lived untill you've seen "Tinkerbell" and "Cavewoman Jill" going at each other over some remark that pushed them both into "facial reconstruction by long fingernails mode".
Totally surreal to witness, bloody hazerdous to break up Thank the Lord "Viking Bridget" or "Predator Cathy" didn't kick off though
Thanks. I was thinking of trying Greg. I used Jeff and liked the drills but struggled with the run walk thing. I still walk on bits but that was mainly on longer runs or between drills. And my walking is usually very short periods.
I just fancy a change. The plan really helped keep me motivated and I only postponed a run once - mainly because I didn’t realise you could change the day 😂
The day change is a little strange, if you put it on a day that has another run on it, one of them vanishes! I hadn’t missed any, but couldn’t not hit the pause button really.
I think Jeff is the only one that teaches jeffing... I quite get on with Greg, so will let him take me through all of them and then try the lady.
Do not get me started on Covidiots. 😡 Whether running. walking the dog or in the supermarket, I’m always the one to move over. 😡 (I let people out whilst driving too and regret it immediately if I don’t get a thank you). 🙄🙄
Thanks... I’m getting there! Too many covidiots, don’t blame you for being the one to move out of the way to be honest... the number of non identical sextuplets we have in town is amazing... either that or lots don’t care so we need to avoid them. I let loads of people out when driving... especially anyone on their phone, I want those guys in front of me, not behind.
Great 5k pb UNM and I know exactly what you mean about people walking 3/4 across a pavement. I end up on the road just for my own safety from them and checking there are no cars coming.
Thanks. The east of town is good, I can see a long way and there’s not much traffic coming at me so I run the road a lot (outside of parked cars) but the other side is crazy busy and has roundabouts on corners, so it’s just not an option. Hopefully better next week when more are back at work... and eventually I can have my parks and trails back!!!
Good thanks, not posted much, but I do keep an eye on the forums. I'm still plodding along happily Actually, tbf, I am steadily improving both speed and distance - up to 8k now, so 10 is definitely in my sights! Lockdown has been brilliant for PBs! I was actually wondering whether it's you and Little Miss I've seen on the Simmondley trail a few times? It's my regular route, I like that it's flattish, and I can easily work out adding loops to get to specific distances
Old man in (usually) all black with greying (ok, grey) beard and young teen in Gamesley Woodlands with two tiny dogs? Could be 🤣. We’ve been doing C25K together there to get her back into it, I’ve been doing most of my running up moorfield and old glossop. Figured we’d passed each other... gimme a shout next time you see us... I can usually catch her up!
Yup, sounds right, definitely two tiny dogs one time I was going off that VRB Lyme Park photo, but I run without my glasses on, so I often barely recognise even people I know! I usually have a multicoloured headband, clashing violently with the red face.
We've walked a lot up Moorfield area recently, but mostly the kind of hills (Wormstones etc) that I'd NEVER contemplate running!!
I keep looking over at the trails and wishing they were empty enough to have a crack at... mainly I’m using the road for a nice easy start and then go wherever the moment takes me after I get past the golf club. Have plotted a 7 miler where I go up the snake for a hard bit and then an easy finish... just need to drive up there and check how far up the pavements go... or pester DCC to close the road! I think we could be right on the map with a 5k event that’s all downhill and ending in the town centre.
The course I have starts at the top of Shepley Street... about 400m of elevation gain in the first 3 miles and then a flat bit before mainly downhill back then into familiar territory down moorfield, along to the golf club, up towards the snake and the left and back to the start. Plotting it as 2 hours I think I can probably just about get the up done... 10:30 to 12:30 a mile and then on the way down the fastest it would be I can do. When I resume my plan at the weekend I’m not too far off getting a 2 hour run... I’m thinking it has to be done!
Definitely sounds like one I'd rather walk! But I'd be interested to see the actual route on that basis, sounds like a circuit we've never done. I like my walks to be hilly and exploring, and my runs flat and predictable!!
Haha! Goals, goals, goals! Great run, fantastic time! My workout has found it's way to my watch, not sure quite when it finally crossed the ether but it was definitely there by last night.
Thanks. Now that’s exciting! I’ll unpause the plan on Saturday I think, I was down for a hard workout, which I assume will still be next, so a recovery run next for me I think.
Goals... They’re strange... I was aiming for sub 30, and I believe that 29:59 almost feels a bigger win the say 29:01... just missing a goal I didn’t even have sucks 🤣
Sadly, I can imagine exactly what you mean there 😅. I've been trying for a sub 27. The other day I discovered I've already hit that goal - my last real parkrun in Feb was 26:59. Far from being happy, I was disheartened that my goal is now the even more unreasonable sub 26:59 😅😅😅
As a goal, 26:01 is obviously tougher than your new 26:58 target... but the latter would only give me joy... the former would leave me happy, but also thinking 25:59 was so close and steal a little of the joy... just the way my head works. In reality if we just measured in seconds that would vanish.
I have had the opposite reaction. At one parkrun I got a pb of something :06. What I remember is the 06, not the other number! But at the time I was really happy because a, it was a massive PB and b, it meant I didn't have to try too much jarder to get in before that pacer the next time. I remember all that really clearly, but not the number if minutes 😅
That’s cool... and a strange concept for me. Vive la différence! I find it fascinating that even when being competitive (with ourselves) we are still all different.
That was a great time but my favourite bit was “covidiots”! I’ve met a few of those. My 2 year old granddaughter knows better. When we go for a walk she shouts “people” and gets to the side of the path. Tbf she knows nothing else. 😔
That’s amazing... 2 year olds should struggle with this as we are social creatures. I think young kids have done amazingly well with this, it’s nice to see them able to use the equipment in the parks again. The much maligned teenagers have also done a lot better than I thought with it... sadly, most covidiots I’ve seen are more my own age.
Here’s hoping normality returns as soon as it can, kids need to be kids rather than showing adults how this is done!
WHAT? just be bloody happy you beat the 30mimnute barrier and your time by over 2 minutes and also gives you an incentive to go back out there and better it. well done!
Don’t get me wrong... I was delighted... but being so close was like a tiramisu without the chocolate dusting on top... I’ll eat it all day, but I want that extra bit 🤣🤣
A lot of them apparently... I’m thinking that a 50k ultra will come before a marathon now as my daughter wants to run Medoc with me but isn’t old enough. Thus far I’ve only found one other marathon I want to do, and Snowdon is scary steep!
Wowee UNM, that's a huge improvement and a fab time...well done 👍🙂
Usually don't mind but I hate people getting in the way when I'm trying for a good time...I once said a very naughty word under my breath when I was trying for my fastest 1K and I had to wait about 2 seconds for a car to pull out, those 2 seconds were important 😆
On a 1k PB attempt those 2 seconds are crucial! I don’t know what I run from a start over a km, as I work in miles, but I’m fairly sure my fastest km came in the second half of a long run.
