2nd attempt at 8km nailed

After not quite achieving 8km last weekend (7.2km), I felt a little anxious this morning as I set out for my 2nd attempt at 8km, especially after a few tough runs in the heat during the week.

At 5km I was feeling good, at 6km even better but was conscious I was still going at my usual 5km pace (going by my garmin) so thought best try slow down for the last 2km. It felt like I had, my breathing was good and the legs were holding up, the last 500m were hard but I made it, 8km achieved and I couldn’t be happier. Then after checking my KM splits, the last 2km were actually my fastest even though I thought I’d slowed down, a bit confused by that, but I’ll take it 😀.

Well done, 10k is not far away, keep going you will get there 👍😊 .... When I was doing bridge to 10k I often used to run further than half the distance I wanted to acheive, so if I wanted to do 8k I would run 4.5k then turnaround and head for home. When 8k ticked over I was still 1k away from home, it just pushed and tempted me to go a bit further 😊

Brilliant! I am a bit behind you in the magic plan but I am sure we will both get there. And its strange isn't it that sometimes your sense of your own speed is off. That is beauty of having garmin or strava I suppose. You have the evidence!

Yes I definitely felt slower which I think is what got me through it, but obviously wasn’t. Good luck with your plan

I think someone should do research into why that happens, I frequently try to run 1st few km slow and steady then discover they were fast - who would know. Well done on reaching that 8k target today. Happy running 🤗

I’m rubbish at pacing myself, and with some more experience would love to achieve those elusive negative splits. They mainly elude me at the moment due to me setting off on the first km or two too fast ( by my low standards anyway 🤣).

Well done on your achievement today. Happy running 👍

That’s awesome. I managed my first 8k last week (just) so I’m feeling anxious about the second one this week on week 5. Hopefully, it will go as well as your run. Well done 👍🏻
