It’s a Bank Holiday here in Ireland. But a very weird one. No Pubs, Restaurants or Parades. No crowds, as today is normally a big family celebration. Everyone is resting at home. Roads are quiet, few people about.
I had not done a 10K since last November. I had planned to get back to 10K soon and need to work on longer distance than my favourite 5K distance. So today I headed off at 10:30am and ran away out of the town and out into the countryside on a 11K loop. I slowed my pace back and listened to The Strokes on Spotify and just relaxed into the run. I ran for 6K and worked my way around the gradual uphill section of the run. At 6K I was tired and pressed pause on my watch and took a 2-3 minute break. I then continued on my merry way and finished the last 4K. I stopped, pressed save on my watch and walked the last 1K home. I did a nice average pace of 6.08 min/km finishing the 10K in 1:01:23. I know I took a break after 6K, but I’m happy with that considering it’s been a while since I did 10K. I'll continue to work on it.
I didn’t pass too many people today, but anyone I did meet, even if they were on the other side of the road had a lovely friendly wave or hello. It was good for the soul.
Happy St. Patrick’s Day everyone from Ireland.

And to you damienair! Your run sounds a much better way of celebrating than drinking too much green beer! Yes, I agree - a cheery greeting and a smile to others out walking and running is definitely welcome just at the moment!
A very happy St Patrick's Day to you Damien, that was a very good run and time for you today.
I was on a train today and the ticket inspector told me that he came from Dublin, I wished him a happy St Patrick's Day and told him if he had any spare time to listen to the RTÉ Gold radio station, they are are playing the greatest all time top 100 Irish hits. No running for me today but I did manage a 8K walk, I am now back home listening to the top Irish top 100, they are now at No. 45.
What an excellent way of celebrating St Patrick’s Day damienair. Maybe you can rehydrate with a few glasses of green beer, or is it just the Americans that drink that? Have a lovely time with your family. ☘️ ☘️ 🏃♂️☘️ ☘️
It’s the right thing to do. No one really cares about the pubs being shut. Everyone here as far as I can see are paying attention to the advice. Schools off, Universities and Child care centres too. Everyone working from home. This is just a calm before the storm. If everyone payed attention and followed the advice all would be OK. 2 people in Ireland have died already due to the COVIDIEN-19 Virus. 2 too many. I’m dreading the weeks ahead. I work with a Medical Company and supply products for what lies ahead. I hope we don’t have to supply or sell to much.
Oh my gosh, no need to be apologizing, I wish the pubs and bars were open. Don’t worry, I didn’t take your lovely message as making light of anything. It’s a weird time. Stay safe and stay healthy. Happy running Beachcomber66
Sounds like a great way to celebrate St Patrick's Day. Hoping everything will be less weird soon. I might follow your lead and hit my local 10K trail in the morning... it's been a while!
Well done Damien! I’m mighty impressed with your 10k pace. You’ll end up being a pro at that distance as well as 5k too I expect. 👏👏👏
I can only imagine how you must have felt yesterday - what a surreal St Patrick’s Day it must have been. You’ll all need to make up for it next year! ☘️ 🍺 💃 🎉
Enjoy your runs and stay safe! Hi to Oisin too! 👋 🏃♂️🏃♂️
Hopefully we will be all able to celebrate next year. I’m going to work on 10K so as when parkrun starts back again I’ll be fit enough to run after breaking PB’s. Hope all is good with you and your family too. Oisin is well, no School but Teachers are sending work via email so both our boys will be home Schooled for a couple of hours each day. I’m going to take him out for an odd 5K so as to keep him fit.
That was a good run, and unhindered by parades. It was a strange day, wasnt it. We normally go to a community big breakfast and to the parades.
The community centre is mothballed, and musicians are grounded. So, like you, I went for a run. Then our comhaltas group were posting videos from home, so we got our fix of trad.
I think we will be doing more solo runs in the coming weeks. Fresh air and good mental health are great benefits!
