Leap Year

Hi all,

Towards the end of this month, the 29th of February falls on a Saturday. The last time this happened was 1996. So no one has ever ran at a parkrun on the 29th of January before. Next time it will happen is in 2048.

I’m looking forward to taking part in a little piece of history.

Damien

I know, but I will miss it :(

But I will be running with Lanza Road Runners - my parkrun substitute when I am in Lanzarote :)

Oooo that’s got my interest. Sorry to jump on this post but I’m often in Lanzarote (Playa Blanca) but pootle about on my own. Is it like a park run or a running group?

Absolutely no problem, feel free to jump in....

It is a fun run group, although they are mostly residents they are extremely welcoming to visitors of all standards, even walkers. The first year went I was even "adopted" for some coaching by someone who was having an easy week before a marathon - he would send me a message telling me I was going for a "parkrun pb" the next day !

We meet at an ice-cream kiosk in Puerto del Carmen and run along the promenade towards the airport (turn back just beyond the perimeter fence to clock up a 5K).

Then back to the kiosk for coffee and/ or ice-cream.

Meet at 9am Saturday morning and 6pm on Wednesday (6.30pm in the summer months)

It is free but most people pay 20 euros for lifetime membership and a tshirt. You also get a discount card for the Ocean Lava shop.

The Facebook group is m.facebook.com/groups/21635...

It is worth checking that it doesn't clash with a running event, otherwise the regulars may not be there. They are very involved in the Ironman triathlons.

Wow that’s brilliant, thank you so much for the info - I’ll check out their FB page. I’m a bit of a swallow (winter months in Lanza) so may see you there at some stage.

That would be a great VRB meetup.

29th February, it could be a very interesting parkrun, I agree with you about it being a little piece of history.

What a great thought! Love it! I do love these one-off dates. Also I must confess I’m shallow enough to be thinking that Garmin might do a badge for it 🙈

Buddy34 profile image
Buddy34Graduate10 in reply toJazzyrunner

No you're not shallow . There should be a badge for every run🤣🤣🤣

Yessss! 😂😁

Running Challenges website might do a badge for it.

I will be there at parkrun and would love to still be running in 2048 for the next . I wonder if there will be any marriage proposals at parkrun😊😊

Unfortunately my sister has selfishly decided to get married that day so I will be heading to Berkshire when I should be at Parkrun 😢

damienair profile image

Try and sneak in an early parkrun in Berkshire if there are any.

Sandie1961 profile image
Sandie1961Graduate10 in reply todamienair

Unfortunately, it would have to be a 5.00am start so probably not doable!

You'll have to tell anyone who wants you at there wedding it will need to be a friday or sunday🤣🤣

Well, this one was the biggest surprise ever - they’ve been together over 20 years and apparently she just went ahead and booked it before telling my long suffering lovely official brother-in-law to be. Mind you, her craziness is what he loves about her, God help him 😂😂😂😂

Buddy34 profile image

Good on her . Me and my now husband had been together for 27 years, I'd been with him since I was 17. We love going to Oban and got married there july 2019 in secret then told all the family. 😊

Trying to schedule one for that morning, but it’s not looking good for me at the moment... so I may have to keep running into my mid 70s to bag the 29/2

Would love to do that one and the next one in 2048 although I will be 94! still we have a 96 year old parkrunner here, Whangarei I think. 🤞

At Shepton Malle we are doing the run, in an anti-clockwise direction. Should be interesting.

The only time my football team won a major trophy was through a victory in the Carling Cup Final at Cardiff...and it was on 29th Feb! Destined to be.😊

I am ok thanks; bit busy. Haven’t done a Park Run since my last PB in October! Been building up distance (hence yesterday’s 10 miles) and flogging away at hills. Trying to build up pace a bit now so Park Run is back on the agenda. Shame to break my PR PB streak, but has to happen sometime.
