Running fuel,

How do you fuel your runs, before, during or after. For as long as I can remember I was a Weetabix person, but porridge has replaced them, not 100% but definitely on running days. Then I'd hit the fruit bowl on my return home washing it down with water or a sugar free juice.

My last run which was my longest I took a treat size bag of jelly babies, was it a boost? I'm not sure but I think it added some spiring to my steps after the 5k mark.

Porridge with nuts and fruit (and a little honey) EVERY morning for me - I am a creature of habit!

Running fuel for over 10k is Tailwind or Power Flapjacks and whatever I crave afterwards!

(I add almonds, dried fruit, dried cranberries and dried cherries to mine and leave out the pine nuts).

Happy running!🙂

You don’t need any extra fuel for runs under an hour. As long as you're hydrated well every day you should be fine. As Sandraj39 suggests, something like the flapjacks are popular for longer runs but everyone is different and you should experiment. Some people can run miles without additional food and others need to nibble something regularly. Some need breakfast and others run better on empty.

Chocolate milk is a great post-run drink but again you just need this only for those longer length runs. Play around and see what suits you.

Porridge is brilliant (I eat it too) but Weetabix is good although not a slow release carbohydrate like porridge.

Decent coffee does me.

I love to have natural organic yoghurt to which I add blueberries before my morning run. Whilst enjoying the post run glow 😊I have wholewheat toast with avocado & coffee.

As i run early mornings, I tend not to have anything beforehand as on weekdays its 5k's. If I am going for more than 6 miles I will have some toast an hour or so beforehand and if more than 8 I may take something to eat. I suggest trying out different things that work for you.

I tend to have a cup of tea and maybe a couple of choccy biscuits if we have any. I don't have anything more because I worry that it won't be digested enough before my run. I'm only at the W9 stage so I'm not particularly worried about it atm. I have porridge and blueberries on my return. Sometimes scrambled egg as well. Depends how hungry I am. Surprisingly though I'm not always that hungry after exercise! This is an interesting topic though. Should I eat more protein after a run ? - I just want to feel my best - it's an unknown entity. I think I'll definitely do the jelly bean thing once I'm going on consolidation runs though. Well done Imc50 -this subject could run and run!

A protein shake (or something high in protein) after a long run is said to ward off DOMS, and I’ve found that to be true for me. I use SIS Rego.

I tend to run empty and on 10k+ runs I have a gel halfway round (or every 35 mins if running more than 10k). I also take Cliff Blocks (like jelly babies but cubes and veggie) to graze on for the last few k and a protein bar to eat on the cool down walk.

These are all useful tips - thanks.
