Well, Garmin said to wait 3 days to recover from the slow 6k on Sunday morning. Twas a foul work day yesterday so 3 became 4. It nearly stretched further when my lovely neighbour grabbed me after the school run for a cuppa and we got to nattering. I was dressed for running and we did TALK about health for a bit... An hour later I went home and started pottering about, then took myself in hand.
Mum bought me some Aftershokz bone conduction headphones two months ago as a birthday present and I hadn’t used them for running yet, due to a) not running; b) not charging them; and c) not knowing how to wear them correctly so I chickened out, thinking they would fall off. Having now taken the time to look at a picture and put them on correctly, I am pleased to report they were very secure and comfortable - and I could hear cars approaching, even with Annie Lennox belting out Eurythmics Greatest Hits. Great running album, by the way. Tres upbeat.
Not quite 6k and it was a bit of a struggle in the latter half. My old bête noire, the 18-20 minute black beast, pounced on me. After a nice controlled 2.5k I was pretty much savaged and never quite recovered my equilibrium. I was on an uphill with the wind in my face and the breathing just went to pot. The smile slipped and I took several short walking breaks.
Ah well. I refuse to feel discouraged! I got out there, right? The fit young twenty something that I ran with on Sunday was working in the garden as I got back. She hasn’t run since as her hip seized up afterwards. Not so bouncy now 😬. I gave her my sympathies and a tennis ball to gyrate on.
The fella has taken up running, by the way. He sent me a picture of his new shoes! I am very pleased. We might try and do a sedate 10k together this year. He runs not a lot faster than the YouTube Japanese slow jogging man. His calves seize up if he goes any faster, like some sort of built in safety feature preventing him from overreaching. This has the benefits of a) not breaking into a sweat, meaning he doesn’t need to buy activewear (he says that’s a positive. I think a little bit of shopping is a nice thing 😉); and b) not stressing me out, trying to keep up.
Garmin says another 3 days of recovery for me now. Happy running to you all!

Can we just clarify that the photo is of the fella’s shoes? I spent the whole time reading trying to shake the devil off my shoulder saying, “Pssst, Paul. ‘er leg’s a bit manly” I let out an audible sigh of relief when I got to the end.
It doesn’t matter, of course it doesn’t. Just...y’know. Would’ve been weird.
So how does one gyrate on a tennis ball, and for what purpose? How would one, who’s carrying a teensy bit of extra haulage around the midriff not destroy said tennis ball? Hey, I bet that felt good though, right?
Nowt wrong with an ankle pelt for winter running. But yes, for your peace of mind, since clearly my ankles affect it, they are the fella’s pegs.
Cant believe you have never gyrated on a tennis ball. Just get down and grind on your offending parts, not quite in the manner of Prince’s Nikki. I would recommend a sturdy plastic spiked version for those who might absorb a softer ball.
Just to clarify, when I said “I bet that feels good” I was referring to little miss bounce’s sick note when you’re off galavanting. Not that gyrating on a tennis ball feels good, it couldn’t possibly.
I tried this last night, but don’t have any tennis balls, or spiky substitutes, so had to improvise with an orange. I don’t recommend it. It doesn’t end well for either party.
I’d recommend a rotund root vegetable, rather than a fruit. Onion, potato, yam... 🧅 🥔 🍠
And yes, it feels great. It’s tricky to write without innuendo, and far less fun, but there is nothing like deep penetration to relieve aches and pains.
If there was a momentary flicker of feel good, it was snuffed out in milliseconds. Injury sucks and Tiggers need to bounce.
(so glad that was confirmed!) and he has got the running bug, nice shoes btw!
I have chosen to largely stop looking at outcomes, I set a time for my run and if I complete that, great, if I go over... great too🤗
That said I am considering adding 5 minutes to one run per week to see how far I get, as I quite like the idea of 1 long run a week, but I keep stopping 😬.
It will be my own little motivation programme.
I hope your neighbours hip is ok, maybe she overdid it, this is why I don't fancy running with others, too much pressure 😟
Haha. I did think about clarifying that fact earlier on, but rather enjoy the moment of confusion.
When does a run become a long run, I wonder? 40 minutes, 1 hour, 2? Good luck with your mission.
I can’t believe the neighbour was feeling pressure. She was having to hold herself back to keep up (down) with me. But perhaps running more slowly than feels natural isn’t that great either? It seems be a recurring problem for her, anyway. 🙁
You ran, therefore you conquered. Gremlins, begone! And how lovely to have an OH who not only runs, but runs at your speed. 👏🏼🎉 Things to celebrate in the New Year.
P S - I too think just a bit of shopping is an okay thing. 👍😊 Plus, his shoes are nice but I also like the floor tiles!
