Out of nowhere and the evening after a 4K run on Wednesday my left Achilles heel is really sore. It’s a bit swollen, tender to touch and I’m limping about.
Anyone had experience of this? I’ve had no problem with it before and have good running trainers and didn’t injure it whilst out. It’s taken me totally by surprise. How long will it take to get better? So frustrating!!

Agree, you should see a doctor or, preferably, a physio. Can you afford private physio? In the meantime rest.
I’m not qualified so this isn’t medical advice, but when I’ve suffered with ankle tendon problems (not Achilles) I’ve found using ice packs helpful when it’s swollen and hot, as well as resting with it elevated and wearing compression socks. (That’s basically the RICE protocol). But do get it checked out. Hopefully it just needs a bit of rest and maybe some strengthening exercises.
I know this sounds daft, but do you have any tightness in the hip area on the opposite leg? Sometimes a problem in one part of our body causes an imbalance, and the thing you first notice Is a symptom rather than the cause.
As an example: My right leg is shorter than my left leg. This has given me chronic tightness in my right adductor and a generally stiff right hip. Every time I run, my left Achilles is painful to the touch afterwards. It soon passes, I have been told it’s all related and the ‘cure’ is to put a lift in the right shoe and keep in working on the movement in the right hip through squats, lunges etc.
Ouch, sorry to hear this Skyart. A similar thing happened to me seven weeks ago. Do get yourself checked by a doctor or physio to see exactly what the issue is.
Mine is Achillies tendinitis and although its getting better with the exercises my physio has given me, it takes quite a long time to strenghen again. My ankle is still weak.
Rest it. Lie on the bed with your leg propped up high on cushions, higher than your heart for 20 mins twice a day. I applied ice to mine while I did this ( bag of frozen peas wrapped in a tea towel) pressed against the heel area to help reduce the inflamation.
There is a good article by Pain Science you could look up for information. But please do get checked in case there is a serious problem that needs urgent attention.
It’s slightly better today after not walking the dogs yesterday. I haven’t made any appointments yet as I’m waiting to see if it’ll calm down. I’m wondering about seeing a foot specialist as I had plantar fasciitis on the same foot 18 months ago- so maybe I’ve got a fair issue?
7 weeks recovery time is a bit alarming! Hoping mine isn’t that long as don’t want to lose my fitness. Hope it goes ok for you!
Just wanted to let you know I haven’t been able to run for 4 months! Take care of yourself as it’s surprising how easy it was to get injured! First run yesterday - a very slow and tentative 10 mins
