Morning dear running friends,
I've just been out and done by final run of week 1 of ju-ju- 's 10k plan, which was 5.5k. I knew I could do the distance as I ran 6.5k a week ago, my goal today was twofold: 1. SLOW DOWN! Thou art not a bat out of hell! and 2. Try out my new insoles which are supposed to help correct my under-pronation. Oh - threefold - I probably should run 5.5k really.
So first of all, slowing down. I have taken to running to one of those running music tracks, mine come from podrunner.com. Now let me say at this point: I hate that sort of music. I would rather run to 40s or 50s jazz or swing, and in fact at various points during C25K I actually did! But for now, what I needed was something with a clear, driving beat, and this seemed to fit the bill. I was originally planning to chose a 160bpm track to push myself slightly, then I realised it's probably daft to push the pace on a longer run, so I used the 155bpm track I used for my 6.5k run, and looking at the graph from Pacer, my pace was pretty consistent, so I'm happy with that. I ended up running 5.52km at 7:11/km, which seems reasonable for me. At no point did I feel I was running out of energy, my breathing was good, and I felt amazing, although the good weather helped. My unscientific test of breathing these days: do I have enough breath to say good morning to the many dog walkers?
So quest two was to try out my new orthotic insoles. I was not convinced when I bought them, but I cut them down to my size, stuffed them in my trainers, and off I went, after a brief test walk. They felt funny because I now have arch support where I didn't before, but I quickly got used to it, and I finished the run with my legs/ankles/knees/hips feeling better than when I started, so I am cautiously optimistic! Maybe now I can dare to buy those fancy Asics trainers I've had my eye on...
And of course my 3rd goal was to run 5.5k. Done I'm getting scarily into this running lark... is there a cure??
Have a great day, run safely everyone,
Neil
