B210K Week 1 Done! Not a bat out of hell this time :)

β€’20 Replies

Morning dear running friends,

I've just been out and done by final run of week 1 of ju-ju- 's 10k plan, which was 5.5k. I knew I could do the distance as I ran 6.5k a week ago, my goal today was twofold: 1. SLOW DOWN! Thou art not a bat out of hell! and 2. Try out my new insoles which are supposed to help correct my under-pronation. Oh - threefold - I probably should run 5.5k really.

So first of all, slowing down. I have taken to running to one of those running music tracks, mine come from podrunner.com. Now let me say at this point: I hate that sort of music. I would rather run to 40s or 50s jazz or swing, and in fact at various points during C25K I actually did! But for now, what I needed was something with a clear, driving beat, and this seemed to fit the bill. I was originally planning to chose a 160bpm track to push myself slightly, then I realised it's probably daft to push the pace on a longer run, so I used the 155bpm track I used for my 6.5k run, and looking at the graph from Pacer, my pace was pretty consistent, so I'm happy with that. I ended up running 5.52km at 7:11/km, which seems reasonable for me. At no point did I feel I was running out of energy, my breathing was good, and I felt amazing, although the good weather helped. My unscientific test of breathing these days: do I have enough breath to say good morning to the many dog walkers?

So quest two was to try out my new orthotic insoles. I was not convinced when I bought them, but I cut them down to my size, stuffed them in my trainers, and off I went, after a brief test walk. They felt funny because I now have arch support where I didn't before, but I quickly got used to it, and I finished the run with my legs/ankles/knees/hips feeling better than when I started, so I am cautiously optimistic! Maybe now I can dare to buy those fancy Asics trainers I've had my eye on...

And of course my 3rd goal was to run 5.5k. Done :) I'm getting scarily into this running lark... is there a cure??

Have a great day, run safely everyone,

Neil

Good morning 316neil,

There is one cure I know of, run 3 times every week 😁

Jokes apart, I’m on my W8 of C25K, so reading posts like yours keeps me motivated. It helps immensely knowing that other people who have successfully completed C25K are continuing to make good progress.

Thanks for your post!

β€’ in reply todas_vikas

Well thank you for thanking me for my post :P

If running 3 times a week is a cure, then I'm a lost cause now lol! I do like to keep posting my progress because I know how much reading other people's progress has encouraged me over the months. And Week 8 of C25K? You're doing really well, you've as good as graduated! Just 2 more minutes, right?

All the best for your graduation!!

Nope, no cure at all, sorry You are now afflicted for life. You will have to streamline your finances to enable new shoe purchases. Fast shoe, slow, shoe, trail, shoe, blah blah 😁

I like jazz and swing music too πŸ˜ƒ. I like all kinds of music thank goodness Always something to run to πŸ™‚πŸ‘

Gosh I never thought I'd be worrying about shoe purchases. I'm not a shoe kind of guy, but I found myself the other week a) in a running shop and b) coveting some rather expensive Asics... so yes I fear you may well be right.

Running along to Frank Sinatra during C25K was certainly an experience for sure :)

I kinda hope there is no cure Neil as today's run was so enjoyable for me too. Glad to hear you are doing well with the start of Ju-ju's 10k plan, I start this on the 15th June so getting inspiration from your post. Thanks & good luck with this weeks runs. :)

β€’ in reply toLorijay

Thanks Lorijay , no, I don't think it's curable either! Good luck with your start in a couple of weeks, personally I couldn't wait, so I just started it :) Plus - I had to try to catch Sadie-runs up!! :P

I think an ultra marathon might cure you from what I have read about them πŸ˜‹ scary stuff!

Well done on getting your goals done this week. The orthotics sounds interesting.

β€’ in reply toRichard7

Hi Richard, I'm certainly not even considering an ultra marathon, that sounds insane. Let's just get to 10k first, eh? :)

The insoles? Not really that exciting, they are insoles shaped for arch and heel support, but I think they are helping, I haven't had any of the niggles I sometimes have had after a longer run. They usually went away pretty quickly, but as of this moment, my legs feel great.

Glad to hear it we don't want you being put off your running by doing a scary ultra!! πŸ˜‰

Good work buddy! And pleased to hear that pace was utmost in your mind. I seriously do believe this will get us through this plan. We are tortoises not hares, and we WILL win the race! 🐒

Happy to hear the orthotics seem to having good effect, too. All in all seems you had a super run my friend. πŸ˜€

Happy Sunday and well done! Onwards and forwards!

Hi Sadie :) Yes, I think the pace was just right for me this time, I was trying to sustain distance, and I managed it. I possibly could have gone more quickly, but I just felt like running for pleasure.

So funny, I was chatting with a couple of friends at church this afternoon, who are training for a 10k, believe it or not. They are younger and faster than I am though, they did the Great Manchester Run I believe or something like that, and have done HMs in the past. They invited me to come running with them this evening. I said I would love to, but unfortunately as I had already run today, I needed to take a break. Phew :) Can you imagine, running with real people? I'm still traumatised from that parkrun!

Enjoy the rest of your day too Sadie, hope you feel better soon.

Nope! I am still not in the place where I can imagine myself running with other people. My park run barcode gathers dust in a drawer...but heck, I never thought I would start 10k training, so never say never!

Running for pleasure? πŸ‘Œ Perfect!

Great goals and a great run! I also use the highly unscientific breath test of saying good morning to dog walkers, walkers, and other runners. When there are few others on the paths or running at the lake, I'm known for singing to myself ..... I LOVE my tunes and my running playlists full of all-time faves! Usually, I sing quietly under my breath but have been known to belt out a chorus when I think I'm alone, only to see someone near by πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈπŸ€·β€β™€οΈπŸŽ€πŸŽΆ

A wee bit embarrassing, but us runners are a goofy sort anyways πŸ˜†

β€’ in reply toSadie-runs

Now WHY doesn't that surprise me??!

β€’ in reply toSaskAlliecat

Lol! I generally don't sing out loud unless I get really excited, I'm usually too focussed on the running to be honest. But just occasionally, it has been known :P We could invent a new thing, karaoke running!!

Just like plogging (picking up litter +jogging), but instead of doing right by the environment, we'd be entertaining innocent dog walkers, etc and perhaps making a few uncomfortable with our breathy and likely off-key karaoke πŸ˜‚
