Compression sock hell

Hi, I've been running 5k regularly but sometimes my legs especially my calves ache. I cycle, do 45 minute step classes and aerobics and recently have been having to walk to work two miles each way three times a week. I thought I'd give compression socks a go so measured up and got some both times I've tried them I've had pain in my calves. I only have problems when I run has anyone else found they've made things worse not better or is it me ?

I expect my calves, thighs and achilles all to ache a bit after a run, and don't mind as long as they settle down within a day or so ……. but when I started running more (3 times a week with one run in the 8-10k region), and with a mid-foot rather than heel strike, my calves did start hurting rather more, and my right calf muscle pinged once, putting me on the IC for a week or so. I got some compression socks, and for me they worked, so I'm back to gentle aching - and calf raising exercises on the rare occasions I remember I should be doing them regularly :-( . Now I've got a second pair, a bit longer and tighter, only worn once so far, and with them I did think I might be going to cramp up, and was happy to roll them down at the end of 5k. So all I can say is play it by ear …..

Best of luck

Thanks that is helpful, I did roll mine down today but only managed about 3k. There doesn’t seem to be rhyme or reason at the minute but I never thought of some calve raising exercises so I’ll try those. It doesn’t happen every time, I think it might be all the extra walking I’m suddenly having to do to get to work which is meaning I can’t get as many runs in due to the time factor. I might try a different foot placement as well..... quite a science this running lark isn’t it 😂😂

If you google nhs calf exercises , you should find the link micey. Good luck.

My physio suggested I do the calf exercises on my non run days. Then after runs I do these

Thank you so much, I had a run today just under 5k and not too bad I will definitely take your advice

I do my calf raises while I’m cleaning my teeth. It’s become a habit now. You can hold the sink with your spare hand if you wobble a bit 😁

Great idea I’ll be able to do them at work standing behind the counter as well

I've never used compression gear so can't give you any feedback. But are you stretching/foam rolling? It's amazing how painful tight muscles can feel. A foam roller is especially good for tight calves.

Thank you, I’m going to get one I think, I’m a bit confused as to what type, but I think all the walking has been the final straw for my poor legs😂😂. Do you know which type I could try, there seem to be variations on a theme any advice would be gratefully received

Try this one:

And take a look at some YouTube videos to check on the right technique.

Thank you so much, I will get one and report back

I’m no expert but you do seem to be doing rather a lot! - could they be over-use issues? I use compression socks and love them. My favourites are Kalenji “sleeves” from Decathlon which have graduated pressure up the calf but should only be worn during exercise - they have others for recovery.

I also find it helps during a run to focus mentally on my calves and running gently if they start to twinge. My problems always start when I look around at interesting stuff and I stop thinking about my feet and the path 10 feet ahead - my gait must change or I don’t adapt my landing to the terrain.

Thanks for your reply, yes I do think it might be the extra 12 miles a week walking to and from work, needs must as no bus service and our car is no more. It may well be that my old legs are trying to tell me something but even if I have to do shorter runs till they surrender 😂😂. My calves only ache when I run not after, or during any other exercise so I shall take your advice regarding being more mindful of them when I run thank you again

Thanks everyone for your help I’m overwhelmed at the help I’ve been given, I intend to try jujus magic programme after I get a few obligations out of the way and all the advice has given me something to work with as I go forward.
