Hadn’t run for 12 days thanks to a niggly hip so set off this morning just to see how things went and ended up doing my first 6k!

Had been planning to do it on my next long run, before the hip niggle threw a spanner in the works. Set off thinking if the hip played up I’d just come home n if not I’d just run whatever felt comfortable, never expecting after 12 days off that I’d even do 5k but it just all felt so good I decided to just go for it. It took me 1 hour 14 n a half minutes n I loved every second of it! 😀

Sounds like a fantastic trip. Glad the hip problems have settled down for you.

Thanks, it was great and such a lovely morning too! Been doing some hip strengthening exercises, they’ve really helped 😊

Fantastic keep them up, hips/groin are my weak point but I've been doing exercises for them for years so just run through it you only live once 😉

I could run through it but the pain was waking me up so I decided a break was probably best

Very wise, its not worth pushing through pain! 👍🏻

Have explained below mine is old and creaky pain, apologies if it sounded like I was advising to run through the pain.

No, I never thought that, you have the wisdom that comes with years 😉 just commending Jill for not giving in to the impetuosity that comes with youth 👍🏻🤣

Unfortunately as a teenager skiing in the '70s the closest we got to after exercise care was spray on the deep heat so that nobody could breathe because of the fumes😉

GoGo_JoJo profile image
GoGo_JoJoGraduate10 in reply toGrannyhugs

Surely you sprayed it to inhale the fumes!? 👍🏻🤣🤣🤣

Grannyhugs profile image

I think we were all to innocent and committed to skiing, missed opportunities ha ha

Lol! It’s more that I’m choosing to be sensible so it doesn’t stop me running any longer than necessary 😂

Not at all! I could have run through it, it wasn’t particularly painful when running or walking but when it started waking me up that’s when I knew it needed some tlc

Absolutely, I think mine is old age and overused body, I could turn into a sitting around knitting granny but I'm not ready that fir years and years yet. You did the best thing and hopefully you will stay pain free.

Jill, what exercises do you do? I've got niggles in my hips too, I'd like some exercises that work!

I found this routine for runners on YouTube, it’s really helped. Hope you find it useful 😊

Fab work Jill! It just goes to show that once we get into a routine of running that our bodies remember and we don’t lose our fitness that quickly at all.

SeeJillRun profile image
SeeJillRun60minGraduate in reply toIrishprincess

Thank you! Yes it certainly does! I wasn’t sure if starting back on a long run was the way to go but I think my body needed the exercise 😂😂

That's brilliant Jill, I'm trying to balance runs with niggles as well, it's not easy 😬 but that one was definitely worth the wait! 🙌

Thanks! Yes, it was odd cos it wasn’t really painful while I was running or walking, but when the pain from sleeping on that hip started waking me up I realised I needed to take a break n get it sorted out before it got any worse. It was hard missing my runs but I’ve added the hip exercises into my routine now. Hope your niggles are as easy to sort out 🤞

Haha, you wanted to use that new gear of yours you bought the other day. 😉

Well done on your run, and you did well that you were flexible with the distance, given your hip.

Take care!

Lol! Honestly I was a bit warm in my new gear lol. But it’s so lovely n comfy, I love it! 😂

Thanks, I honestly wasn’t sure how it’d go, it’s the longest break I’ve had. But the exercises are obviously paying off, I feel great now! 😄

It's amazing the effect a break can have when we actually fear the exact opposite 👍🏻😁 well done!

So true, and thank you!

Wow that’s fantastic! Well done 👍🏼 Resting is definitely worth it in the long run and that’s a great mindset to get going again. Brilliant work 💪🏼

Hello lovely ! Sounds like a great run and well done on completing your furthest distance....

I haven’t been on here for ages, still running but once or twice a week at mo (must get back to 3)

Nice to see your post pop up and your still doing fab ! Xx

Cheers! I’m not on here as much either these days, I tend to just pop on when something new occurs, hence today’s post

Good to see you’re still getting out there. Two runs a week is still better than none. Keep up the good work! Xx

That's brilliant! Congratulations! I've had some hip pain after running for the last three weeks or so. I've cut down from three runs a week to one but it's still bothering me, not when I run but afterwards. Perhaps I should have a longer break? And do you do all these hip exercises or just some of them? I've been doing an it band stretch and some hamstring stretches but nothing specifically for hips. I appreciate we might have different issues, just curious as to what worked for you!

SeeJillRun profile image
SeeJillRun60minGraduate in reply toGwenllian1

Mine would come on during a run but wasn’t particularly painful, more uncomfortable really. The pain would come in bed as I sleep on that side. I decided it was better to have a break from running n do some strengthening rather than keep going n risk making it worse n needing a longer break

I did all the exercises in the video I shared above as soon as I found it and discovered that the pain and discomfort was loads better afterwards. I do the exercises maybe 3 times a week, fitting them in with my usual strengthening exercise routine, which I kept up while I wasn’t running, n now I’m pain and discomfort free apart from a slight twinge in bed. I’ve decided I’ll keep doing them as I don’t want a recurrence n they seem to have done the job

Hope you find them helpful n that your pain is soon a thing of the past. I’d definitely recommend having a short break to give your hip time to rest and recover n hopefully with the help of the exercises you’ll be back soon better than ever!

Commiserations on the niggly hip. It's just what I've got! So frustrating as I'd just done W4 of JuJu's plan with 8 & 4 km runs that went brilliantly. The hip niggles came on and the 5k yesterday was hard work and quite some discomfort after. So I'm going to have to give it a break this week I think unless things dramatically improve. Was so looking forward to doing another 8km on Tuesday but I don't think it'd be wise. Soooo frustrating!

Glad yours got better, albeit taking 12 days.

Ooh you’re not the only one feeling frustrated at the moment Iain. I’m in the same situation and decided (reluctantly) that I need to take a longer break before my next run now. Seeing Jills post has made me feel more certain that it is the right decision. ❤️

Are you like me when prevented from running - that when you see someone out on the streets running you feel jealous and wish it was you?

Aah SeeJillRun... well done you!! 🤗 That’s exactly what I needed to hear today I think. 😍 I’ve had a niggle with my hamstring and after completing today’s run with the niggles reappearing despite doing some yoga and strengthening, I decided to rest it for longer today. You kind of know when your run isn’t as much fun as it should be. But you’ve cracked it! What a great run! Well done to you!! 😍❤️
