Two very different runs

Monday I thought I would mix things up a bit. I have been following NHS B210k plan and finding it a bit hard now that I am running nearly 7k 3 times a week. So I am switching back to Jujus plan and thought I’d finish up with the short run of week 3 (3.5k) and also do the Audio Fuel Speed Podcast. Strangely enough it actually felt quite slow to start with and the actual run seemed to fly by. Breathing was fine, legs felt good but when I’d had my shower and uploaded the run to Strava and Garmin Connect I realised that my times were actually slower than my usual runs.

Then today I’d planned to run first thing like I usually do but woke up feeling a bit off ....achey legs... general knackerdness... so I put it off till later. Had to walk to town for a couple of errands and found it really hard going especially coming back up the hill to home. Portered about clearing junk and tidying a huge cupboard- nothing too strenuous- and then this evening I thought as it was a lovely evening I’d go and do the 5k for this week( week 5).

I thought I’d do my old 5k route for a change so off I set and walked to the Spar shop for my 5 mins warmup and then off I went and seemed to be getting a decent pace quite easily as I went down St George’s Road.-thought to myself “ I’ll check at the end of the road how fast I did it “. But when I reached the end of the road I glanced at my watch and realised I’d not pressed the button hard enough and my timer wasn’t going. So annoying but as I pressed it Laura said “ you have been running for 10 minutes. “ so at least I know how long I ran for altogether. So the podcast is 30 minutes and I’d run for 10 before I started recording and I carried on till my watch said 30 mins ( so 40 mins total). But my watch only recorded 30 mins and says I did 4K but I’m counting it as my 5k run as I’m sure I managed another 1k in the first 10 mins as my overall pace was 7.47 per km.

The strange thing is I found it really hard going after the first 10 mins. The toxic 10 turned into a toxic 30 AFTER the first 10 good minutes. And I’ve drunk plenty of water over the last couple of days AND had a hydrating drink too at lunchtime thinking it might perk me up. I don’t know if the difference is running in the evening rather than mornings ???

I have days when I can’t run, I try but just don’t have the energy.

Generally for me it’s 50 year old hormones or the fact I’ve been working too hard (stress really saps me), or I’ve had a hard dressage lesson with my horse ( can be hard work as he’s sharp and needs plenty of leg)..,Dehydration definitely doesn’t help or for me, lack of sugar( people can say what they like about sugar but my body needs some it) 😂

7ks a good distance, I’ve just started jujus plan too 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️

Well I think my 65 yr old body has run out of hormones now🤣 and energy too. Been helping my daughter move the contents of her 2 bed flat into a 3 bed house she has just bought but she’s let one room to her brother and he has 2 pinball machines AND the house was her grandparents house and still has half THEIR furniture and stuff in ( which she won’t part with !!). So I have been driving 60 miles to her flat and 60 miles back , packing, cleaning, moving furniture, taking junk to the dump, gardening and generally helping for the last month or so. Did the main move 2 weekends ago with her big bro and a mate but this is final day in the flat.

Not helped by her working 2 hours away, by commute, from her job, so not having a lot of time to do stuff herself...

And I’ve been managing to run 3 times a week for nearly an hour each time. I think this week my body just said “nooooo”. And annoyingly not sleeping well either.

I’m amazed you’re still upright! I would’ve flaked ages ago with all that on!

Haha. Just done 43 trips up and down 32 outside steps from my daughters flat to the van and then she says( she who has been in the flat cleaning and pottering) “we just need to walk into town to drop the keys off!!!!”

Il wait in the van thanks!!! “

And we still have to unload at the other end. But no steps there thankfully.

Quiet day tomorrow I think.

All unloaded now and van returned to the hire co. Kettle boiling , curry in microwave and slippers on now. Not doing much at all tomorrow. Will be mainly lying in a heap, under several cats and kittens I expect, recovering.

How frustrating.I hope you find your level again.I must admit I just can't get it together to run any time but morning.

I can’t even begin to guess why some people prefer different times. I’m lazy and love lie ins, so rarely do an early morning stint. Unless of course it’s a hot summers day. Then I have to go early as I know I’ll wilt trying to run in the sun! My problem is whether to eat before I go. I don’t for Parkrun, in fact I only have a small drink (lady of a certain age so will need the loo if I drink too much) and I’m ok for that. I will ear before a tough 10k XC, but at least an hour before. Which is probably why I don’t run much in the morning! Going at 7 means getting up at 5:30! 🍳

Yes, I'm the same - prefer not to eat at all before a morning run. If I have to run later in the day I often feel sluggish, partly tired and partly because I have eaten.

It’s always so difficult to know why. Keep going, you’ll find runs get easier again.

You have had an extremely busy and exhausting few weeks. AND running 7k three times a week!! You are amazing! I think perhaps your body just needs a bit of extra rest to recuperate 😊

I think you are right. Just strolled gently down town and could barely put one foot in front of the other - couple days rest needed I think
