Waterproof hooded running top - any recommendations?

Hi fellow runners :) . . . after getting totally soaked yesterday I was wondering about purchasing a hooded top that is waterproof. On the other hand would I get just as soaked from sweat wearing something waterproof on my head? Any thoughts and recommendations on wet weather running gear appreciated :)

I bought a cycling jacket in Mountain Warehouse last year which is excellent for protecting against the wind and rain and it keeps me warm. I just wear a hat during the winter. Some days your just going to get wet, embrace it.

I’ve got a cheap light cycling jacket from Aldi last time they were in. It works pretty well to protect me from a temporary rain shower and stops me from looking mad running in a wet t shirt. In a proper downpour it leaks but as you say it also gets pretty sweaty despite the air vents. I think it’s worth having though and much less heavy than my usual rain jacket. Quicker to wash and dry too. In short I’d recommend one

A waterproof jacket over a T-shirt and a peaked cap to keep water out of eyes seems to work quite well. 👍

I bought a kamleika hooded jacket. Quite expensive but good. Raining or not, I often take it off when running once I am warmed up. It just ties round my waist by knotting the arms. Hood and jacket are useful if I have a walk to the start of a run; also good for keeping warm pre run if I am hanging around waiting to start and post run.In other words, at its most useful when not actually running! 😊

Ran for first time in a Peter storm running rain jacket in the rain this morning. Somebody on here recommended it. Ok, it’s not waterproof it’s shower resistant and it doesn’t have a hood.

It out performed my other jacket which is a Nike shield. Only a couple of slight damp patches on the shoulders. The best thing was, it seems very breathable. Didn’t miss the hood wore my buff baseball cap. The boys version is hi viz green. Very sensible for winter

I have a water- resistant running jacket but it has to be pretty cold and wet for me to keep it on for the whole run (I hate being too hot on a run). I can confirm that it is not water proof but it does slow down that 'soaked to the skin' feeling! The best thing I have for the rain is actually a running cap. I only use it in heavy rain but it stops that very annoying 'rain in your eyes'! Good luck! 🙂👍

I bought a showerproof jacket with hood from decathlon a couple of weeks ago and tried it out other day. Wore a running vest underneath and stayed nice and cool. The whole thing folds up into its own pocket 😎 But it is BRIGHT PINK! 🙎😂

Thanks everybody for the replies and thoughts... despite running for many years I've yet to come up with a really satisfactory wet weather running outfit. I'm currently coming round to the idea that a baseball cap might be the answer at least to keep the water out of my eyes :)

You can get rainproof caps.I wear glasses and can honestly say that my rainproof cap is one of the best things I have .

I was out in a deluge yesterday morning doing 10K and when I took my cap of my face and head where dry.

I had a rain jacket on and the rain had gone right through it and I had puddles inside my sleeves. It poured out when I opened the Velcro cuffs.

Hi orangeguy ...Just thinking about having a hood on has me sweating cobs!!! I have a waterproof jacket that's very thin...I have started a run a few times with it on but after about 5 minutes, I'm faffing about trying to get my armband off, fastening the jacket round my waist, armband back on again...all while trying to keep running!! phew...so now I don't bother with a jacket..I'm waterproof, so I'll dry...a long sleeved running top will do, but not yet, its still far too warm...I'm still in my shorts!! Running in the rain is fab...theres nowt like a good soaking!!

I know just what you mean. I have a Helly Hansen hooded top which makes me sweat but even worse the hood rustles and irritates the hell out me when I'm running any distance. I don't really mind getting soaked but rain water running in my eyes I don't like, I've just a ordered a water proof baseball cap, we'll see how that goes :)

Hahaha...I cannot stand anything noisy either...my keys in my pocket, anything rustling, I find it really off putting!! A hat is the only thing I wear when its raining....well, you know, not the only thing!!!! 😂

I have a jacket from decathlon which wasnt too expensive but regardless a baseball cap or visor is really useful in sun, rain and snow... 😱

So glad you posted this orangeguy as I have been thinking about the same thing. I was frozen when I started last night but sweating and wet from the rain when I finished. I really don't know what to do, though I like the idea of trying a cheap jacket from Aldi, as I'm not investing too much in something that may never get used. I look awful in a baseball cap but it might sadly be the answer....

I know what you mean, I'm not a baseball cap kinda guy either 😂 but I'm thinking when needs must 😁 . . .

Fully waterproof gear will raise your body temperature and you'll sweat lots. If you dislike rain try and avoid it or wear a cap. The only time l draw the line is cold winter rain. That stuff can hurt you badly. Otherwise, light jacket or no jacket and getting soaked.

I prefer to just get wet. Windproof has more value for me if I'm going to do a long wet windy run.

I'd add my voice to the cyclewear suggestions
