Cold weather gear

Hi guys! After some advice, please. Now it’s getting colder, what do I need to wear? I have a couple of long-sleeved base layers, but apart from them, only vests from the summer. I don’t know what to get, and I don’t want to waste money on superfluous stuff, or duplications. I have long and short leggings in Lycra. Please help! Thank you in advance. 😊

It is still vest and shorts weather down here but I know we’ve been lucky this week. Layers are the best way to go for the colder weather as you do heat up while you are running. For last year I bought a long sleeve thin top and a long sleeve thicker top with a zip up high neck. When wearing the thinner round neck top I wore a buff as a polar neck. A shower/windproof jacket - mine is hi-viz too. This can be taken off and wrapped round your waist if you get hot, and is good once you stop running. Long leggings - one of my pairs have reflective marks for running at night. Most important to me is running gloves as my hands do feel the cold . My socks are slightly thick than the summer ones. A clip on light if running in the dark too. Ive got thick hair but a hat might be useful if it’s cold too.

I hope this helps

Thank you, Dexy. I think I can probably improvise for starters. 😊

Merino wool base layers (very light weight ones) work well for me, top half when it’s cold, bottoms as well when very cold. Merino is warm but breathable. If it gets very cold then a light jacket and/or gloves and hat. The best advice I ever received was to look up the ‘real feel’ on the weather forecast (ie taking into account wind effect) and then dress for 8 degrees C warmer than that, to account for running. So you only need a jacket when you are looking at around 6 degrees real feel and below. Other than for any standing around you might have to do.

Thank you, Coddfish. Probably in a month or so, I’d better go shopping! 😁

I used 3/4 length bottoms all through the winter as well as summer. What I did buy recently was 3 long sleeve running tops from Decathlon they are kind of cosy on the inside . decathlon.co.uk/run-warm-je...

Keep an eye out for running gear in special deals each week in LIDL and ALDI, they do great winter running gear. Also Sports Direct have a good range of base layers which are very affordable, Sondico range. No need to spend a fortune. Sports Direct also do a good range of affordable running jackets made by Karrimor.

Thank you for that! Aldi is my hubby’s favourite shop, so it’ll be easy to persuade him to go there! 😁

I found my best winter apparel item is my Nike windproof and shower proof running jacket. (Other brands are available) can just remove it and tie round your waist when you warm up. Also get the long sleeve tops with the longer sleeves you can use as gloves. For more severe weather I found some windproof legs from Aldi which are just the job and were not very expensive.

Thank you! I shall have to start visiting Aldi on a regular basis! 😁

In addition to all the above, I found micro fleece-lined running leggings for especially frosty days indispensable. They are good at keeping my leg muscles warm even if it's snowing and my pair has lasted me about 10 years now.

My wrists and hands get cold before my body so gloves are a must for me, or wrist warmers :D

I have a zippy jacket too, I like being able to unzip to cool my body :)

If it's very cold then I'll use long sleeved T-shirts or even a fleece if it's snowy / ice.
