Hello folks ! Here we are again.. and the month is simply racing along...!

I thought I would use a photograph which would make us all feel cooler :) Yes I am completely loopy!

Warmer now and very, very humid in some places... making moving too quickly a tad unpleasant!

I am back to running three times a week again with some extra rest days here and there though... but feeling more like Oldfloss again!

More importantly... I need to know what is going on with all of you..how your goals are going and how you are coping with the heat :)

Remember to run safely and that the runs will wait!

So..just to recap... :)

What is the Quest?

The aim of the Quest is to help you find a focus or goal that you would like to achieve by the end of the Quest period.

The Quest takes one calendar month. You can join at any point during that time.

I ask that you are a C25K Graduate before joining the Quest. The reason for this is that pre-graduation your week is very much structured according to the C25K programme, and I wouldn't want the Quest to interfere with that.

Most popular goals are:

★ To run three times a week

★ To slowly increase distance

★ To train for a specific race

★ To add Stretch and Strength exercises to your weekly routine

This is a personal challenge, so it's completely up to you! If you want to join, all you have to do is comment below with something like:

I would like to join the Quest, or, count me in! I want to ..............

At the end of the Quest, there will be a certificate for you to download and keep!!

Please, please, please....do make sure you take care during the warmer weather....things are really hotting up!

Check out the stay cool posts please!!

Wishing you a wonderful week of safe, cool and happy running! 💥

I think that photo will make some people wish it was winter with the high temperatures and humidity expected in many places in the UK this week, in fact the Met Office and Health England have issued an Amber Heat Health Warning for many areas in England from a line south of Chester over to Hull, apart from South West England the day time temperatures are expected to be over 32C/90F and upto 36C/97F in some parts of the south east including London, even the coolest part if the day around dawn the Met Office forecast say that the temperature won't go below 23C/73F, they say the hot mornings will be on Wednesday and Thursday and maybe also on Friday in the south east but the good news is that by Saturday morning, parkrun morning it should be a bit cooler by then.

You are not in that Heat Amber area in North-West Wales, neither am I in Central Scotland where in both places it's to go to around 27C/81F, not the extreme heat of 36C/97F for those in the Heat Amber area in parts of England.

Well, kick my butt! I haven't done anything this week. It's been between 85-95 here and our air conditioner was not working. I am not 20 years old anymore, (try 72,) and so it's been bad--add to that that our power was out during a weekend storm (so think: no water, no toilets, no refrigeration, no lights, no cooking, and HEAT!) I say kick my butt because somehow I didn't do anything when we HAD electricity. So I'm sorry to say I need you guys to kick/hit me.... : ( : ( : (

(I will try to get off the stick and do something 3x this week.)

Hello OF

As previously reported, ✅ for getting my “long slow” up to 18k, thanks to Dexy keeping a lid on my pace for 14.5k🏃🏽‍♀️🏃‍♂️.

The plan for this week is to rescrub the 13k race pace fail from last week, but aiming for my original target pace of 6 mins/k rather than the suicidal 5’30” I went for last time😀.

And I’m ditching the the speedy treadmill sessions until after the GSR - that’s one monthly challenge too many for now 😜

Onwards and upwards!!

Oldfloss profile image
OldflossAdministrator60minGraduate in reply to UpTheStanley

Well done you... all sounding good there...I think the taking a look at how we are running in a realistic way, certainly for me anyway.. pays dividends in the long run :) Ha Ha.. !

You do have Dexy too, to keep you in check! I have to admit having a small burst of speed...1K....not your standard though, (6.17), on Sunday :)

Well I’ve discovered that snails prefer cool running, not this humid soupy air, so I haven’t broken any records this past week - my last run of note was 17k the week before last. My quest for the next couple of weeks is 18k, but only when it cools down. 🤞🤞

However, this morning I had a stern word with myself and fired up JogRunSprint. I drove up to the local common at 6:30am, dog in tow to keep me accountable, and ran 5k incorporating 4 sets of 3 JRS intervals. I’ve deduced I love the jogging (natural 🐌 pace), enjoy the sprinting (only 10 seconds so I count down my strides which makes it easier), but I hate the running part in the middle. No idea why!

Stopped to talk to a nice lady when I’d done. She had 2 gorgeous Labs who were playing with mine. It was then the horseflies came out to play. 😩😩😩

Oldfloss profile image
OldflossAdministrator60minGraduate in reply to cheekychipmunks

Horseflies agahagahagaah ! The terror of the Summer... I have so much bright gear to scare them away!! Their bite is worse than their neigh!!!

Very well done you... really hitting those distances...just do take care in this unusual heat!x

UpTheStanley profile image
UpTheStanleyGraduate10 in reply to cheekychipmunks

JRS tactics - "sprint" faster 😜, that'll force you to "jog" slower (to recover), and then "run" at your "natural 🐌 pace" ……… maybe.

Horseflies …. uggggh 😩

Enjoy your little break and your slow short runs Floss. I’ve just realised- you are Oldfloss and cheekychipmunks dog is called Floss.

Anyway, I digress, I managed a 4k with a 1k speed record , a 13k and a parkrun last week. I’ve a few social weeks coming up so I will try to keep up 3 runs but I won’t do a very long one this week. It’s going to be too hot and I think I’ll go for extending a long run every 2 weeks. I only managed to get into my Pilates class once last week but I should be ok for 2 this week . I should add to my quest my mission to slow UpTheStanley down.

Happy running or sunning everyone.

So... I am compared to a dog now... faster than a snail though... four legs :) xx

Sounds like a great lot of of runs...and a real mix which I feel is the key to many things... I did not do my long Sunday run, it was much too humid... should have been 9K ... stopped at 3K!

You are doing well and those goals sound realistic....and you are keep in the lovely UTS in check too:)

The thing you and floss the dog have in common is the love of running.

I am tired today but happy to have run my first trail event yesterday. I learnt that I can fight off battalions of gremlins, that I can persevere when all I want to do is give up, that it's OK to be last (REALLY). Most importantly I learnt not to start too fast (I panicked). So the run was a bit of a struggle because my first 4kms were too fast for me. THIS week, I am going to take it easy. A recovery 5km, lots of stretching, Pilates and I might, just might, do a 6 or 7km in my own lovely forest next weekend. (Well not my very own forest but almost ;) ).

I totally and completely identify with its OK to be last! I'm last. I'm running. I feel so good for it. It's not a race, it's a run.

Huge well done you... recognising what is going on with us is not always easy..but you are well on track...Isn't it funny how possessive we get of our run locations, I refer to 'my ' fields and tracks..

Have a good week!

BluebirdrunnerGraduate10 in reply to

You did so well in your trail race event Paula. Its too hot for much running, this week but stretching and pilates will be good, I will join you..😆. I hope you do get to run in your forest at the weekend, just for you...hopefully the weather will be less oppressive then!😊xx

in reply to Bluebirdrunner

Bluebird, I was just thinking about you and your park runs! There is a park run in the forest where I did my trail event and I think I'm going to try it. It's a 50 minute drive from me but it's on the way to my parents so I can tie it into a visit to them. I'm so excited! Yes, easy does it for us and I'm reading a website called thepeacfulrunner. ;)

I'm still lingering on the Injury Couch, waiting for my hip to settle down. But I'm being pro active, doing lots of stretches and core exercises to try and help everything along. I'm hoping to get back out there later in the week - will probably wait for the heatwave to pass and do Parkrun on Saturday. So my only goal, for now, is to get back to running comfortably 3 times a week. Doesn't sound like much but I'll be delighted with that!

Oldfloss profile image
OldflossAdministrator60minGraduate in reply to Debston

That goals is just fine... it was mine.. and like me you will make it. Keeping up the other exercise work is the thing and you are doing that... the rest will follow. It might be a gentle comeback, but, it won't take long to get back to the stopping point. Stay bright my friend and well done! xx

in reply to Debston

That sounds like an excellent plan deb. good luck for Parkrun

Sitting in the shade in the garden and its still roasting, such a warm breeze😰. Your snowy picture looks so refreshing Floss...

As already mentioned last week was a bit overloaded with running for me.

I ran a 10k on Tuesday ( finishing with two and a half laps on the playing field, quite speedy).

On Thursday Mr BBr and I then donned our running gear and ran/walked a lovely 6k route we had walked on Monday by the river in Ripley. We brisk walked the first 2k along the narrow nettley path, then ran the next 4k, through Wisley golf course and back along by the River Wey. Mr BBr enjoyed it, and took the lead but kept pretty much to my pace.

On Saturday, well Parkrun so 5k, but hard work for me as I have already posted.

Mr BBr then ran on Sunday evening (yes, he dragged himself away from watching the golf to run!) After the warm up walk off he went to do a 4k by the river in Guildford, while I walked a slightly shorter route and met up at the end...

So, this week, well I feel tired and its so hot... my goal for this week is to fit in a run, any length will be fine, then to do my Parkrun (yes, claiming it now😅) on Saturday when drizzle and cloud are forecast.

I will do some Pilates and some walking and try to keep drinking more water to help my joints.

Stay cool and safe everyone. Its going to be a hot one!🌞

Please, no black clouds on the Llyn peninsula this weekend - I will be there too!

I've kept going but struggled with the consolidation weeks (no motivation, tired legs and no energy), but I think I've got over that now and am starting to find my "happy pace".

I've planned which days I'm going to run and put them in the diary so I don't spend ages deciding whether to run or not - I just do it!

My new GPS watch has been great as I can now track distance and pace. It's shown me that i run faster when I'm feeling tired, not slow down as I had assumed. Hopefully I will learn to run at a consistent pace.

I've also been brave enough to try some new routes and really enjoyed the variety.

I'd love to be able to run 5k in 30 mins but let's wait and see. My fastest mile is 10.04 mins, and my fastest 5k is 34.21mins.

I'm just considering whether to try the 3 podcasts, move on to bridge to 10k or pluck up the courage to join a local running group.

It's so good to hear about your progress too.🏃‍♀️😊 x

Oldfloss profile image
OldflossAdministrator60minGraduate in reply to Cantstopmenow

It's going to be dry and not too hot either...so some gorgeous runs on the cards hopefully...I am looking forward to some coastal runs too..

Finding that happy pace is great...and letting things evolve too...seeing what happens...while mixing the runs up..

planning your days is good..keeps you on track .

It is the long slow runs... that build up distance and speed...if you want speed.. You will get where you want to be :) x

Hi!

I'm so new, having just graduated from C25K on Sunday. I would like to join the quest and run for 30 minutes 3 times a week hopefully increasing speed/distance.

Today was my first after C25K run...... And the first time ......I stopped running after 20 minutes. I'm giving the excuses of it being too hot and having had an indulging celebration for a colleague's retirement last night.

But I don't like excuses and feel very disappointed that I've let myself down....

Should I go again tomorrow??

Oldfloss profile image
OldflossAdministrator60minGraduate in reply to Footleg

No..too hot. .phew.... and we never run on consecutive days so soon after Graduating...after a year or so running maybe:)

Rest..recover...hydrate well and then..run early or run late..mix the runs up..short... 30 minute ones and longer runs too..new routes as well.. and then..decide where you want to go.

So goals for this week? A couple of relaxed runs?

Footleg profile image
Footleg60minGraduate in reply to Oldfloss

Thank you Oldfloss. Got back to it this morning before it gets too hot. In 30 minutes I ran 4.15k. 😁

Had a week break with hand op and in a sling. Tried to run last night but still 27C at 9pm here in Salisbury. Managed 30 min with two short walks but really struggled. Will go back to old route to try and judge it better with increasing distance and time then have another go Saturday to get back to 3 a week again. 5k looking ambitious in the heat, I much prefer cold.
