I was all prepared for yesterday run.. leggings etc put out ready the night before, headphones charged, phone charged, inhalers at the ready... and then I woke up with the worst headache ever and heartburn. I quite often get the two together and this was one of the worst bouts I’ve had. I drank plenty of water, took Omeprazole, ate my porridge ( nice and bland to settle my tum), took a couple of paracetamol. Then went for a walk to do some errands. It was sunny then and I could hardly bear my sunglasses on my nose ( hay fever blocks my nose and makes it painful on the bridge )but I thought the fresh air might help. It didn’t.
I came home and pottered about, took 2 decongestants and made a batch of soup for later even though the thought of it was turning my stomach. But I thought I’d make myself useful. But the headache hung around till 5ish.
Then I decided to try to go for a run however long just to actually get out there. I got all my gear on and was just about to go out and the skies opened , torrential rain, so I came back in and thought I’d try out my treadmill. I set it up and did about 5 minutes after my warm up but by then I was absolutely sweltering so I turned it off and decided to go out and run whatever the weather.
And as it was the rain had cleared and there was a light breeze and off I went. I took off too fast as usual and had to slow myself down and then settled into a bit slower than my normal pace. I’ve decided not to worry that I seem to be about 8.00 min per km instead of 7.30-45 as usual and just be glad I’m running. I passed lots of other runners all going the other way and one bloke who shot past me at about a 3 minute mile ... one minute he was in the distance and then past me just like that!! No time to even register what he looked like. The rest of them were more normal runners albeit most of them slightly faster then me I think.
I had put my thin jacket on over my tee thinking I’d take it off partway but I actually kept it on as there was a nippy little breeze coming off the river. And what else can I say except I managed 4.5k out and 4.5k back again.
The only thing that I will say was that in the last 2k I seemed to get a second wind and speeded up a bit to my usual 7.45 and was running and breathing freely- feeling more like my old self and smiling away to myself - feeling like a runner again and then as I cut past the bottom of the High Street, when I was nearly home ,I glanced in the window of an empty shop and saw my reflection. I’d had been feeling lean and mean, arms pumping away like a real runner but there was this reflection of a little old redfaced, fat lady shuffling along instead. I don’t know who she was but I’ve resolved not to look at my reflection whilst running again.
Still...9k ticked off for this week 👍😀
