Beach run

Hi all,

Any advice on running on a beach, I’ve managed a few 10Ks now but they have been on the flat along the prom.

I’ve finally taken the next step and entered a 10K event that takes place on the beach. Is there anything I need to know before going for it.

Thanks in advance.

I think oldfloss did a parkrun on the beach in North Wales, and she found it really tough! Check her posts. I've never tried running on a beach, I would think the best you can do is have a go before the actual race if that's possible. Good luck!

Thanks, I’ve just hunted it out, wow what an amazing achievement, inspirational. Will definitely try and have a go before the race.

Trainers or barefoot? I used to run on the beach when I lived in Australia, sounds obvious but practice on the beach you're going to race on... if you can. Every beach is different. If it's possible try and run as close to the water as possible, the sand is usually firmer, and won't sap your energy as much, running in dry soft sand is difficult, takes more effort and practice.

Good luck.

I think the main thing would be to understand the timing and flow of the tide so you don’t get caught somewhere. Assuming it’s a sandy beach (really hope so, shingle would be really tough), the closer you are to the water, the firmer it will be underfoot.

I did a lovely beach run in Santander, Spain last year. Felt very chariots of fire.

I run on the beach most runs. Yes to running close to the sea. Best when the tide is out and best on sand. Sometimes it’s stodgy underfoot regardless of those factors.

Take it steady and don’t expect to be fast but I think it’s good for stability practice. It can also be windier than inland. Watch out for sharp shells and stones. And keep an eye on the waves!!

Thanks for great advice, I’ll certainly be wearing trainers and will still to firm sand. Hopefully I can have a practice before the event, feeling a little nervous as it’s my first proper event / race. New things do faze me!
