I had a weird one with my Garmin Forerunner 235 this morning. Checked the time before I went out, and it said 5:17, but it was 8:29. So while I warmed up (5 minute outside walk) I watched to see when it connected to the GPS, and it didn't! Then it said the time was 11:29....
It was misty, and a very odd thick sort of mist too, started about 30m above the ground. My theory is that the mist was thick enough that the watch couldn't get a good signal from any satellite, so guessed.
About 10 minutes into my run, it suddenly bleeped, and was reading the right time. Oddly the GPS must have been working a bit, because it got my route and pace spot on, even those first 10 minutes.
Don't you just love technology?

I dislike it intensely right now..my Garmin was playing up too..as was Strava and having chosen a new route..which was horrid.. I had no idea of time or distance..!
But..you ran..it's recorded and I did too..all good.xx
I wondered if my 35 would sort itself out for the change of time zone when I got to the USA. It didn’t, so I changed the hour manually though the menus, but in the process advanced the date 🙄. That could only be solved by syncing with my iPhone - now I’m wondering if syncing would have done the time too - will see when we get home!
PS if mist can affect satellite navigation the world’s armed forces would be significantly screwed these days ....
Hopefully even the Bootnecks have better antennas than my little watch. 😉
The Garmin manual does say that time is set by GPS, not the sync via the phone - after all GPS works by measuring the time between signals from 3 satellites. But I'm sure I also read somewhere that time zone WAS set by the phone.
I find the best way to update the time when travelling is just start an activity. Once it gets the signal the time should correct itself. Works on my wife's FR35.
I find it good for logging runs, and for stats analysis. It is very complicated to set up for an old guy who is more at home with a keyboard and mouse. I'm glad I bought it.
