Benchmark run Garmin

It’s a late work day so definitely not a run day but in playing about with my new garmin yesterday i had set a benchmark run so as it was just 9 minutes we decided if we woke early enough we would do it

That was very interesting, 2 minutes walking ( not long enough but hey ho) we set off running just before we passed 7 diddly little dogs gave them a wide berth and only nearly tripped over 1 so that’s not bad

Didn’t really feel warmed up but bliss to not be running with my phone in my hand and music in my ear

5 minute run and didn’t feel too hard, the instructions said run hard but i can still just feel my right calf so didn’t want to push it, breathing deep and a little ragged, I missed glancing at my phone to see how fast we were running.

Back to 2 minute cool down walk and it flashed up fastest ever kilometre 7.29 min flip that’s fast, back to the car and home, big smiles at that kilometre and a stretch and cup of tea

This run saved to Strava but no map do i have to take my phone to see a map?

Happy run day all

Which Garmin is it? Looks same as my 235, which does not give a map on the watch but does when I upload (via Bluetooth ) to the Garmin Connect app on my phone.

It’s a vivoactive 4s and is linked to Strava but there isn’t a map, maybe we didn’t run long enough as was only 9 minutes but i suspect there’s a setting somewhere that isn’t enabled

Thanks for your answer i know i will get used to it

Hello. Did you already download the garmin connect app.

When you come back from a run open the app it should then download the info from your watch, then you should see a map, pace , distance etc. Then if you have strava linked up to it you will see the same info.

Have I explained this any good to you

Your explanation is perfect thanks

I downloaded the garmin connect app yesterday as well as strava i googled a bit and decided to run the benchmark run in a coached plan this morning

from what i had learned was once i’d saved the run on my watch it would then upload to Strava, all good so far, the stats are there but no map

I’m impressed because it says our fastest pace was 5.15km/h and that’s the fastest ever so are happy just wondering if i need to do something else to get the map, mind you we ran the park so we know where we went

I bought Garmin Venu on 1st December and returned on boxing day (touch screen stopped working), i was tempted to buy Garmin 5Plus (60 pound extra), but i got replacement for Garmin Venu, till now working fine.

And it's my first sports watch of any kind, infact this is my first watch which i bought for myself, before that i had watch gifted by my father (2003, i still have it) , my father in law (2010, my son broken it recently) and friends (as farewell gift in my last company, 2016 still working).

Yep, Buddy34 is correct. You need to download the Garmin Connect App. You will have to sync your watch with the Garmin Connect App. It will download the map data from your watch and you can see it then on your phone or PC. Nice looking watch by the way.

Thank you, maybe it’s the GPS

I like the look of this. You can see the information all the time as opposed to the fitbit but perhaps that's just my fitbit setting. I'll need to investigate all of these features.

If you are used to fitbit this takes a bit of getting used to

Looks a nice watch. Out for a walk yesterday a runner passed me holding her phone out in front of her so she could look at it. It did look very awkward, so the watch must be a great improvement.

I have a Forerunner 235 which tells me how fast I'm going whilst I'm running - in fact there are a number of different displays I can choose from - and you can make up your own if you wish, and can also download some custom screens from Garmin (via your phone). I'm not familiar with the VivoActive, but I expect it offers these or similar features.

It’s amazing not having my phone, i haven’t got to grips with display yet though and miss seeing speed while i run but i’m sure i will work that out

All the run stats are on the garmin connect and strava but no map again i’m sure i will find a way eventually

So far i love the garmin and not carrying my phone means not dropping it again

I had 3rd run with garmin coach last night and messed a bit wirt display - no idea what I did but must have been something to do with laps. But at the beginning I have see pace, time and something else and could have gone up and down to see more.

It might be that the watch had no GPS signal. I don’t know Garmin but is there a little icon that shows when you are connected to GPS?

SueAppleRun profile image
SueAppleRunGraduate1060minGraduate in reply toRigpig

I don’t know there are a lot of little icons but i will find out, next run day is Saturday and i keep playing with it so i’m sure i’ll get there in the end

I love new things and tech especially

It does sound like you had no GPS signal WaS. I have a Forerunner 235, and when I set to run, it beeps at me telling me to wait for the GPS, then again to say it has a signal. It’s then it’s ok to press start and get running. The route then shows up on Garmin Connect and Strava.

Could that be it do you think?

They’re great watches, whichever model. 😀

and i certainly couldn’t wait and didn’t hear a beep, i knew i was coming to work later so was in a hurry

Hi WaS, did you start the run as a run? I know the question seems stupid but you can start the run from the Garmin coach widget or pressing the top button and then selecting the run option and then you get a "today's workout" option and then "do workout now?". If you do it like that, you have to press the button again to start the time, you need to wait a little bit in that screen for the watch to connect to the GPS. If you start from the Garmin coach and then "do workout" you then get to select the type of activity, make sure you select run and not treadmill or run without GPS. Finally, you might have disabled the GPS from the running activity, if you don't manage to get a map for next run, I've had the same model for a month now, so just ask for help

Thank you so much, i looked at coach runs yesterday and decided to do the first benchmark run and it came up this morning there was nothing about GPS this morning so i guess i hadn’t done something

I just love this watch and pressed everything several times yesterday so may have disabled stuff

we did our fastest kilometre today and i knew it was fast because i was puffing like a train

I will be following this as Im having the same problem. Got the watch to work and upload to strava on my phone (vivoactive 3 music) but only got stats not map. Played about with it and got nothing last night.

Just a thought - did you check that the GPS was connected? If it is in the off mode, you will not get a map. Switch it on and outside running you should have a map.

Indoor running on a treadmill I have to make sure the GPS is switched off - and I have a Garmin footpod which gives extra stats.

On my new Garmin 235 I found sometimes that even though you have switched between GPS on and off, it sometimes does not work and you have to double check a couple of times that you are in the right mode - On or Off,.
