Week 3 HM Training Plan

Hi everyone, I’m a bit late posting this week, I got completely sidetracked from posting yesterday 🙃🤷‍♂️ but this is what I got up to in my third week of half marathon training with the Nike+ Run Club app. This week was speed week:

Monday Speed Intervals:

Ok so my first set of speed intervals in this plan. Nike had instructed me to run 5 x 400m with a two minute break after each 400m run. They did also recommend a pace to stick to, but I completely ignored that and did my own thing …obviously.

I went at about 7pm after work decided to use one of the local roads by the school on Coockoo Lane, it’s very well lit, the paths are wide and flat with very little camber and surprisingly it’s quieter than the beach path at this time in the evening.

I hit the button on the app and went for it! 5 sets of 400m as fast as I could, it was so exhilarating! I was running right on top of my toes… quite a strange feeling… almost quite effortless like I was floating… I’m positive I didn’t look or sound like I was floating 🤔…But my god it felt so good. I felt a surge of adrenaline after every burst of speed, my legs felt strong and I loved every single minute of these intervals!

I left the school road exhausted, but with excited anticipation for the next set of speed intervals on Friday…

Wednesday 5K tempo Run:

It’s been a good few weeks now since I’ve had a quicker paced 5K, I’ve been trying to be a good boy and stick to the prescribed easy and recovery paces set by the app for the longer runs, which have be around the 6.30 - 7 minute per KM mark, but for this run I’d been asked to maintain an average pace of 5:56 per KM. It was a dark cold Wednesday evening and it felt great thrashing this one out. A quick ‘out and back’ run to Lee on Solent… I did find it a bit of a slog in parts, but afterwards I had a real runners high.

Friday Speed Intervals:

Twice in one week?! …I must’ve been exceptionally good in another life to deserve this!!!

This time Nike had set me 9 x 200m speed runs to do, again with a 2 minute break in between each run.

Very similar to the last set of speed intervals, but this time I did have an audience, an elderly couple watched me out their living room window, running up and down their road like a complete and utter lunatic nine times in a row.

On one of the sets, I started off on my sprint and hadn’t noticed another runner coming in the other direction about 50 meters away, I think where I had gone from being stood completely still to then sprinting towards him at full pelt it must have surprised him a bit because he completely stopped in his tracks! I did give him a polite smile and a wide berth as I passed him on the wide path but he just looked at me with a slightly worried look on his face, I do hope my sprinting smile didn't look look like a grimace?! 😬

My average pace over all of the 9 sets came to 3:56 (km). I don’t think I’ve ever had quite this much fun in a pair of shorts and compression socks before.

Sunday 7.5K recovery run:

My boy decided it looked a bit windy outside on Sunday morning, his cosy 'Minecraft' onesie was obviously far more appealing than accompanying me out on a run on his bike.

So fair enough I thought, I'll go out for something a bit different today and take advantage of a very rare daylight run. Since I’ve started running I've not turned right at the beach... always left… firstly because of the hill when you turn right (the only real hill in Hill Head), and secondly because the streets are unlit and the paths are a bit dodgy/non existent. But on a sunny (but windy) Sunday morning this would fit the bill nicely.

So I headed on down to Hill Head harbour just after 9am, it was glorious... just me, a few fishermen packing up after a nights fishing and some dog walkers. I stopped and took some photos (see main pic) and it was a very chilled out run indeed, just as a recovery run should be. From the harbour I then ran along the beach front and around Titchfield Haven nature reserve, the wind was strong, but didn’t really put me off and I loved every minute of this run.

On the way back I ran up the Hill Head hill and it was fine. I’m going to be adding this to my regular routes for some local hill work (I’m sure JonathanP will be chuckling at this… no thank you, I don’t fancy trying your hill out!). I think it must have been C25K hill avoidance tactics that has stopped me enjoying this absolute gem of a route so far.

Days like this make me feel so lucky to have this on my doorstep. I’m really looking forward to the spring / summer time now so I can really start to explore some of the trail routes that are along this end of the beach... a good run out west along the costal cliff trail path (pictured) to Warsash and back would be incredible!

This evening I’m starting week 4 of my plan, with my first attempt at 12.5K. I hope you’re all well out there VRB’s, do let me know what’s been going on with your running!

Lovely photos 🙂That looks a really fab run route. Well done to you.

That runner must have been terrified, he probably thought you were going to attack him. Hope you weren't wearing all black too 😭

in reply to Irishprincess

Thank you, IP! 🙂It is lovely, I'm going to be enjoying this route a lot more now.

🤦That poor guy, cringe! Seeing it from his perspective must've been a real shock!

His face is now ingrained in my memory forever, If I see him in the village again I shall have to apologise 😬

You are very lucky indeed! Beautiful place to run!! 12.5k go Thundersloth! I’m sure you’ll smash it!! 💥 🤩🤩❤️

in reply to Fabulous450

Thanks Fab! Yes, I do feel lucky looking at the pics again 🍀I hope you're well? ....12.5K done 🙌 A slight issue with getting in a tangle with a dog lead... but all good ...and done.

Thank you! 😁❤️💥

Fantastic!!! 🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽! Well done you. I’ve not been out for a run for a week now, my January Quest has not been achieved. Schedule has just been so hectic 🥴. But I’ll be back!! 😉❤️

in reply to Fabulous450

Aaaahhh! we'll all need to start pestering you to get out for a run soon then!

...You'll be back with a bang 💥as always Fabulous 💥💥💥 🙌

Ah thank you!! 🤗🤗 I’ve got some home improvements going on, which is great, but all the packing, storing and skipping is happening inbetween my travels for work, so it’s just a matter of balance really.

But, I’ll get back out Thundersloth! I’m much more relaxed and confident about getting back out now. I’m feeling like a runner, not going out today, rather than someone trying to become one. If that makes sense? That’s a great feeling, even though I’ve not been out. I’m sure I’ll be on a nice gratitude run in my favourite place very soon!! 😁😁❤️

What a great week you’ve had Thudersloth. Wow those sprints are fast too. Your laid back Sunday run sounds lovely too, and less crowded than heading east to Lee. With the strong winds yesterday you did really well. Good luck with the rest of your plan, you are doing brilliantly. 🏃‍♂️👏👏

in reply to Dexy5

This week was a lot of fun thank you Dexy, I was looking forward to it immensely beforehand ...and it didn't disappoint!

Aah it is so lovely down that end of the beach, I can't wait to get stuck in to some of the trails around the Titchfield Haven now. Thank you for your support! 😁⚡

“I don’t think I’ve ever had quite this much fun in a pair of shorts and compression socks before.”

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Oh TS that made me snort!

What a fabulous week you’ve had! I’m in total awe of your speed and the fact you’re enjoying intervals so much is inspiring. My tiny sprintlets during my one intervals run so far were just slightly quicker snails, no more!

Your routes sound amazing too. I really need to go for a coastal run one of these days. I’d like to run on the beach, but the sand would need to be just right. 🤔🤔

I had my few days to recharge my running batteries, and went out for a chilly 7k this morning. All good, nice and slow (as always!) 🏃‍♀️

Happy running TS. Love reading your reports! 👍🏃😀 You’re going to totally smash your HM plan you realise! 💪🏃👊

in reply to cheekychipmunks

Oh glad to hear the battery recharge did the trick Cheeky! Well done on your 7K 👍 Although I think you missed running from the minute you pressed 'post' on your post announcing your very short break 😂😂😂 And you're so hooked... you went and ordered some gorgeous trail shoes!

When are you expecting those little beauts to turn up? You'll have to let us know when you've given them a test run. 🏃‍♀️

Thank you for such a lovely reply Cheeky, I'm glad I made you chuckle!

I'll have to get out more in my shorts and compression socks 🤣⚡

Wow, fantastic. Is 3:56 actually possible? Unimaginable. Sounds like you are loving it. Go for it!

in reply to BaddieThePirate

I think I might be able to keep it up for half a KM baddie, but there's no way I could maintain that for a full KM yet. But that's the speed you need to go if you want a sub 20 minute parkrun 🤣🤣🤣 ...I'll keep dreaming!!!

Thank you! ⚡⚡

Wow, keep aiming high. Sounds like you're a natural. I'll think of you zooming along at my next Parkrun when the front runners lap me 👍

What a week! I am visioning that ‘sprinting smile’ and that couple must have been really entertained by you. Great running TS. 👍😀👏 hope the 12.5 goes well.

in reply to Wimborne

Hi Wimborne! How are you feeling now has that nasty cold cleared up yet? ☹️

Hahaa! Yes! i must've been more entertaining than 'The One Show' or whatever was on the box at the time 🤣I had a lovely 12.5K this evening thank you, I'm still buzzing from it now - Many thanks ⚡

What a fabulous week TS. At speeds like that you should be made to wear a blue flashing light on your head. Just amazing 🚓

in reply to Beachcomber66

Hahaa! I could've really done with a blue flashing light on my run this evening Beachcomer. There seemed to be families out in full force this evening taking up the entire width of the path. So I had to either run in the busy road, or get tangled in dog leads... I 'chose' to get tangled in the dog leads! 🤦

Well well TS - I told you the hills would get you sooner or later! Sounds like your training is going really well - fantastic!

in reply to JonathanP

You did...! And like most things it wasn't anywhere near as bad as I'd first thought.

Thank you JP, I hope you're enjoying you runs too.⚡

Your week sounds absolutely divine! What a great week and lovely pictures. Those sprints! So fast and so fun! I can't wait for the ice and snow to clear and get some speed work in! Come on Spring!

in reply to SaskAlliecat

Absolutely Sask... bring on the spring! 🌷

We have a shower at work that doesn't get used, I asked one of my bosses yesterday if I could start using it for some midweek lunchtime runs, and she said yes! I'm excited now, this opens up a whole range of daylight runs for me! I'm going to give it a test run this week 👍

Dreamerooney, you never fail to impress with your wonderful selection of emojis 😃 Thank you for reading my post all the way to the end without drifting off...

Yep, you should give the out and back technique a go, works well for me that one, going out…➡️ and then back ⬅️

Yes week 4 post is already taking shape nicely, going to try and write them as I go I think, so I don’t have a mammoth essay to write at the end of a week! 🙃

I hope you’re half marathon training is now in full swing, good luck with it!

in reply to

Well... I know how you love your emojis 😂👌

Wondering if now is the best time to break the news... I did drift off during the first read 😴... Which could explain my delay in commenting (jokes obvs)😜🙆‍♀️

I love this out&back hilarity... keep it coming! Just remember... who introduced you to ➡️⬅️😅

Writing them as you go... genius! You’ll save yourself at least 5hrs on a Sunday evening then 🥳

Wow TS, you really are smashing that HM plan 👏🏻👏🏻🏃‍♂️🏃‍♂️🙌🙌 3:56 - Rocketman. What lovely photos too - there is something special about the light on the coast isn’t there?

in reply to Sandie1961

Thanks Sandie, I think you'd enjoy that week of runs too 😃⚡

I did manage to get one of the 200m sprints down to 3:28... but there is no way I could continue that for any great length of time 😅😅😅

Yes there is something about the light, especially on that Sunday morning it was beautiful, all the colours were so vivid. I'm so pleased I didn't let the wind put me off from visiting the sea front that day.
