Magic Plan Week 4 Run 3

Today's run was a 5k.

I kept it on the largely roads today because of all the rain we've had - and I don't have trail shoes.

I went out around lunchtime, as Accuweather was predicting a break in the rain. What to wear again? I opted for t-shirt, tights, rainjacket and cap. Hmm - too warm. I swapped the t-shirt for a vest and put the jacket and cap back on. Let's go!

After just 0.5k I was so hot I was running along whilst peeling the jacket off and tying it round my waist. The cap came off as well soon after.

After 1.5k, some boys came past me on the puddle-filled unmade road on mountain bikes. Then I turn the corner and find I've caught them up. I had to wait behind them whilst they dismounted and tried to lift their bikes through the verge to avoid 2 large puddles spanning the entire width of the road. "We don't want to get our bikes muddy" one of them said to me. !!! 😶😶😶

You couldn't make it up, could you!

This was meant to be a slow 5k in Zone 3. But, as for my 8k run on Wednesday, I just couldn't keep to Zone 3 today. I was on the threshold after just 3 minutes into my run. Maybe I'm coming down with something - I've been a bit sniffly the last 2 or 3 days. The fact that I got too hot again clearly didn't help.

Well my run was slow alright - 43:24 - and it felt like I was pushing it for the last km.

I hope my heart rate woes resolve themselves for my next run of the Magic 10 which will probably be a 4k.

Great effort. I find unless there’s wind with the rain making it cold, a t-shirt is plenty. If I’m too hot my HR is always high. Have you reset the zones to match your own personal HR when running? If I hadn’t done that I’d be allegedly running beyond my maximum all the time. Happy running 🤗

Thank you!

I kind of thought it was a mistake when I put the jacket on. It was perfect as a wind proof layer in those high winds last week, which is what I bought it for really.

It was quite humid as well.

I set my max heart rate - at a higher number than the standard formula comes up with - but left the zones as the default percentages until I know more.

Fab run Birdlady64 ! I did giggle 🤭 at the boys not wanting to get their bikes muddy. Reminded me of when I was a kid - we were never allowed to get anything new dirty! Even 🚲 madness!

thanks so much!

It did make me laugh. One was most concerned about a speck of mud on his trousers.

I don't know what they thought would happen, going out for a bike ride after all that rain.

Well us 'boys"are not as tough as you ladies, we don't like getting our feet wet or our bikes muddy 😂well done to you Birdlady64 on running run 3 of week 4, a 5K of the Magic Plan in wet and muddy conditions, you put those boys to shame, I bet you didn't mind getting your running shoes muddy, onwards and upwards 🏃🏾

It was quite funny.

No I didn't mind at all but I really do need to invest in some trail shoes.

Well done on getting out there.

I was a bit sniffly this morning, too, which also contributed to me chickening out of running in the heavy rain showers we had here.

Yes not sure where these sniffles have come from bearing in mind I haven't really been anywhere or seen anyone else since we got back home last Saturday.

I hope you feel better soon. Hopefully the weather will be better tomorrow. I'm hoping to watch the marathon - I hope Kipchoge does something special again

The sniffles are gone now. Tomorrow morning might be a little rainy at 8am, but I'm still planning on going out then. I'll probably put the marathon coverage on when I get back.

Well done! Why don’t you try one of your Zone 3 runs without bothering to look at the zones while you are running. Do it by feel for once. Just take it steady and sing instead! If you sing, that must be the same as ‘easy conversational pace’. That’s what I did last week. I found my pace was slow - yet my heart rate was a bit higher than normal compared to other similar runs. Could be a number of reasons for that, as you say.

That souds like a good idea. I might try that next time. Hopefully Im not going to get a full blown cold and next run I will dress to make sure I'm not too hot

Well done on your run today , especially in this weather , I was laughing at the boys not wanting to get their bikes dirty !

I don't take mine out of the garage if it's wet 😂

I wouldn't worry too much about the zones , I usually just use a conversational pace as a rough guide 😁

I also sometimes sing along to my playlist like Jools2020 😂

That’s a good time, especially with the puddles, i ran in tiny tee shirt and shorts today and felt really comfortable, Willow ran in a long sleeved top and hoodie and was soon stripping the hoodie off

Hope your sniffles go away soon, it’s no fun feeling just a bit under the weather and wondering if it will develop into something more

Thank you!

T-shirt and shorts would have been perfect. It was quite humid as well.

Hopefully the sniffles will stay just that - it doesn't seem to be developing into anything worse 🤞
