OH Graduates! Despite the kicking and screaming...πŸ˜†

β€’38 Replies

So today my OH graduated the Magic 10! We did the C25K together, but when I raised the Magic 10 he would have none of it - 5K was far enough. The aim was to run 3 times a week to get fit and strengthen our legs for snowsports, we weren't supposed to catch the bug!

I put it out of my mind at the time, but when he got sick and couldn't accompany me for a few weeks I snuck onto the plan and tried to entice him to follow suit once again. Again, he said no. I would run with him and he would leave at the mid-point and I would run on. We embraced the 5K together and he come around to the Parkrun idea. We've attended our local a few times and even did a tourist one recently where we met up with a friend from the forum (Saartjie ).

He eventually came around to the idea that there was no harm in running a little longer (rather than further) and we creeped up to 6K, then 7K. Then he'd ask how far we were going when we went out and I'd next an extra K in when I thought I'd get away with it. I then printed a copy of Ju-Ju's plan for the fridge and marked his progress on it - I think he was secretly pleased to see the weeks being marked off as he stopped fighting it and I quickly signed him up for the 10K Movember virtual run 😁

I realised he was worried about managing it and we picked up the pace a little, a practice run in advance would be a good idea I felt.

That brings us to today - today he completed his first 10K EVER! A sprinter in his youth, distance was unheard of.

I'm so very proud of his achievement and thought I'd post here on his behalf since he doesn't follow the forum himself, but takes a keen interest over my shoulder 😊

Absolutely awesome and congrats to you and your OH! Like you we are focussed on snowsports - I never really wanted to run, I just wanted to get fitter and lose a few (ok a lot of) kilos. It works!

I used to hate the 10 minute warm-up on the dreadmill! What happened!?!?

I suspect it was because it was too fast with the aim of increasing heart-rate quickly to move on to the planned exercise. I wonder if they realise they're putting people off running with that method.

New season is nearly here, gear is arriving in the stores as we speak...

Nope, he really didn't... Took longer than anticipated though...

Great stuff Sharron, absolutely brilliant that the two of you have been through this process - you've clearly sorted him out! And it sounds like LoungeLizard's comment is spot on... "resistance is futile" :)

β€’ in reply toHoagyM

It's been great to have someone to run with, even though I regularly get told we weren't running together, he was "catching up". Since the distance increased though we have been more or less on the same pace. 😁

πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘ Well done Mr Sutsha! You are clearly leading by example, Sharron - good work! x

β€’ in reply toSadie-runs

I try! Any argument and I remind him that I took up snowboarding at his suggestion and suffered a few injuries, my ask is way less....! 😁

Thanks Ripcurlrana71 - now do you think he'll notice a step-up to a HM??? πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

He's taking an interest in the trail running films on YouTube and longer Camino-style events, so watch this space...

Good thanks - still looking for the next challenge after graduation but I’m doing a couple of 10K races before Christmas and then I’ll see - maybe a sneaky half sometime next year! Who knows. How about you? Xx

β€’ in reply toDizzysmum17

Pretty much the same. Had hoped to reach HM distance this year, but realised somewhere asking the line that out was a little too ambitious in light of my beginnings in April and my life-schedule and dare I say age πŸ˜–

There's always next year...

Got my eye on a few goals, just to convince the OH!

Congratulations Sutsha on leading him gently to the 10k and well done OH on his super duper graduation. When you are at 5k, 10k does seem a long way but having done 9k now I realise that using the right plan it is so achievable. Wishing you many happy runs together.

That's what I think. With the right plan and encouragement it just happens so smoothly. Unlike W1 of C25K 🀣🀣🀣 Smooth would not be the word...!

So many OHs have either started or restarted running in our group Mr mountaindreamer, Mr TailChaser, mr Dexy5 (UTS) and now Mr Sutsha. Let’s hear it for the boys πŸƒβ€β™‚οΈπŸƒβ€β™‚οΈπŸƒβ€β™‚οΈπŸƒβ€β™‚οΈπŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘

Don't forget UptheStanley. You're right, they're all getting in on the action. 😁

Wow well done both of you! You’ve given me a great idea and maybe I’ll suggest it (very gently!) to my OH to try C25k. Thanks fir posting πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ™ŒπŸ˜Š

β€’ in reply toJelon

This may help - OH wasn't interested in the app and frills, so I would follow the app and he'd follow my lead. He ran when I ran, walked when I walked and that seemed to suit him better. No logic, but it worked. I also kept reminding him of the motivation, for him it was "your legs will be getting so much stronger for snowboarding". 😁

My husband got as far as buying run shoes but that’s as far as it’s got ☹️

β€’ in reply tomisswobble

That's the No. 1 daughter right there: I'd come running if I had the right gear. Full kit-out later and she tried W1R1. The end. 😁

That is such a wonderful post, and you are a wonderful partner to do that for him. Huge well done to both of you for achieving this :)

β€’ in reply toju-ju-

Thanks Ju-Ju! It's all thanks to your plan, it's very achievable if the ground work is done. It just sounds like a lot at the beginning. I got him a pizza medal to mark the occasion and the plan was to treat us to a pizza too, but he's trying to cut back the carbs so turned me down flat!

Looking forward to the Movember run now, although I wish I had convinced him to do the official organised one. He's now looking at the Culloden runs but don't think we can make it happen at short notice 😞

😘
