Running with my son - at last

My son is a PE teacher and runs regularly but lives about 90 mins away. We have been saying for a while that we must run together but for various reasons it hasn't happened. He was visiting for an overnight stay yesterday and out of the blue said 'do you fancy going for a run tomorrow?' Two problems - firstly I did parkrun yesterday (had the wrong insoles in my trail shoes so took it a bit easy just in case), and haven't so far run on consecutive days; secondly my son's idea of a run is at least 10k!

However I wasn't going to miss the opportunity so suggested I run with him today for about 3k - he can then dash off at speed and I'll turn round and run back for as long as I fancy. Sounds like a plan !

Living in Portsmouth, there are several runs with a sea view - we decided to run down the eastern side of the island, along the edge of Langstone Harbour. After a warm-up, off we went.... I set the pace and purposely dialled it back so we could chat. 3k went by really quickly - 'off you go' I said and he disappeared into the distance at a rate of knots!

So the scores on the doors were 5k for me and 12k for him - nice to achieve our joint run after over a year. 'Next time I come' he said, 'I'll coach you for a 5k PB'. What have I started!😀

Oh, lovely fun! 🎉 I did something similar with a visiting daughter who came from California in June and it was memorable. Lucky you, only 90 minutes apart!

Thanks - it was great. Yes, we're lucky to be able to get there and back in a day if we need to.

How marvellous! It’s a great experience isn’t it?! I managed a 5k run with my son in Edinburgh (equally sporty studying for his strength & conditioning masters)

It certainly is - glad you enjoyed yours too.

Oooo Jonathan, how wonderful, and what great runs you both had. The perfect solution! 🏃‍♂️🏃‍♂️ My daughter and I do the same when she runs, although she doesn’t have distance legs like me. Just speedy legs - unlike like me! 😅

So it sounds like you have a personal coach .... watch this space for upcoming Jonathan PBs! 👏👏👏

How wonderful Jonathan - I know you really wanted to do this. At last. A nice afternoon to be running too. Was the tide in - not such a good view with the mud 😂

With school holidays coming your PB lessons could be soon.

Yes it has been a while coming Dexy. It was this morning so tide out but not too hot thank goodness. Yes - as long as he doesn't expect me to do press ups afterwards!😋

What a lovely thing to do, now that you've started, hopefully you won't have to wait so long to do that again 😊

It’s great running with your kids isn’t it?! I’m quite glad mine will never be PE teachers but it would take less nagging to come with me if they were 🤣 Hope this is the first of many more, and good luck with the PB training 👍👍

Sounds like one of those “magic moments” runs you’ll both remember for a long time.

And you’ve got your own personal coach now!
