This Sunday and in support of the local comprehensive . ( The Bishops Stortford High School tbshs.org/) which educated our 4 sons, I ran a proper 10K.
Wow, number on my front and chip on my trainers is very heady stuff for a bloke who only a year ago could not have contemplated such a thing. So off I went. Always a bit worrying when a circular run starts with a long gradual downhill. Keep it steady John, use the Garmin.
No matter, at 4k there was my wife (volunteer marshall) enjoying herself encouraging runners and chatting to the police who had closed off the roads for us.
On I went, a few interesting chats with folk on the way about life the universe and everything. Quite a friendly lot and some serious runners. Am I one too?
A bit further on a couple of our friends had turned up to cheer me on. Wow I had not expected that! I'd better make a decent job of it.
Now, descents mean ascents. I knew there was a steep hill coming. No matter ... I could hear mentors in my ear... "Just slow down a bit ( or a lot) . Steady does it. " Back on the level... 8k saw friends again. Thankyou another boost.
8.5K interesting chat with a woman who had done various marathons. She suggest I go for HM as I looked quite strong . ( well that perks a chap up!). 9Km and I do feel quite strong ( possibly adreneline!), Lets try going a bit quicker.... . Finish in sight, 500m to go. No stopping now. Forget the watch just go, if you still can.... People cheering ( well thats amazing). Over the line and I feel great.
Another milestone for me as special as my first continuous run of 20 mins not so long ago on C25K.
Thankyou to all of you who have encouraged me whether directly or indirectly as I read of your posts and adventures. Keep posting ( and running)
Oh..... The results . The winner did it in 36 min 21 and the head teacher came fourth at 37:36. Me? I came 145 out of 192 in 61min09. Funny thing is I feel like I've just won the Olympics!
