My first 10k race

Hi all!!!

I just run my first 10k race!!! I registered while I was doing JuJu's magic plan and I thought it would be a good idea, but I had a cold this week and I was secretly hoping that the organisers would cancel :) they checked the weather forecast, and the route, and everything was safe, so they didn't... I battled with myself, I had many excuses to support me, but at the end I set up the alarm yesterday, prepared and extra bag with dry clothes and I went!

The drive wasn't good, I couldn't see the road so I was thinking it was a very bad idea, but then I arrived at the race HQ, and after collecting me number a really nice runner came to offer me some pins... Runners are so nice, they take away all your gremlins!

So I was ready to start, they have a cut off time of 90 min (and given the weather they are absolutely amazing to support us slow runners to the end!), my goal was to finish within that time. I knew I could do it but it was going to be hard with all the rain and the wind (thanks Dennis). I started a bit fast, walk up two hills (next year I'm running those) but finished in 1:20!! I couldn't believe it! I couldn't believe the Marshall at km 7 that said I was looking strong either...

Anyway, for all the slow runners out there, I was second to last (and I think the last one was being nice not passing me), but it was a great experience, and now I feel so good about it. Don't let how you look or how fast (or slow) you run get in your head and keep you from having an amazing time!

PS they don't do medals, but the t-shirt is awesome (the picture didn't really show the colours)

That is awesome! So many congratulations on getting out there and doing that in this weather. It is also really encouraging to me as another very slow runner. I have booked to do the Chester 10k in three weeks time. I still haven't run 10k and have had a lot of time off over the last couple of months with injury and a chest infection. Just trying to get back to it now and wondering about pulling out but maybe I won't! Your time would please me very much!!

Go for it Gwenllian1! Worst thing that can happen, you have to walk a little. I decided to walk the 2 hills because they were at km 4 and 7, so it also gave me a break to keep going. I think if I had run only when I was really tired I wouldn't have made it

I am impressed that you made that time with a couple of walking bits! I think I will aim to do something similar. Thanks for the encouragement!

Congratulations and well done, the weather is so off putting at the moment, leaving the house is a battle of wills.

Well done... I also did my first 10K race yesterday. Like you I was almost hoping the organisers would cancel it due to the weather, but they didn't and in the end the weather was OK. I managed to complete it and had such a feeling of achievement. The marshals were so supportive all the way round the course.

Now looking forward to the next one??
