First 10k race!

Well, I did it! Completed the London Halloween 10k last night, it was super fun and I kept going. My work running buddies, experienced runners who have been so patient with me on our lunchtime runs, cheered me in which was very emotional and I was so touched they’d waited around! Couldn’t check my splits for a while and when I did I cried as Strava logged the 10k in 1 hour 7 mins 46 seconds so I was very happy, even managed a 3rd fastest 5k along the way :)

Considering I’m 52, overweight, only did Cto5k last year then nothing until this April again and now addicted to parkrun I’m really happy 😊

Now thinking about a Santa 🎅 run in December!

Wow, I love the costume. Sounds like 1hr 7 mins of fun. What lovely work colleagues. Well done you. Did you get a Halloween medal? 🏅

Anneep in reply toBaddieThePirate

Yes it was great- would have put a photo of that too but could only attach one!

Pic-collage app is great for combining photos.

Anneep in reply toDexy5

Oh wish I’d thought of that!

The costume is brilliant!

Well done on completing, you look really happy in the photo. 😊

Anneep profile image
Anneep in reply to

It was a lot of fun and there were some brilliant costumes there

in reply toAnneep

Have you planned another?

Anneep profile image
Anneep in reply to

Yes hopefully the Santa run in December at Victoria Park

in reply toAnneep

Dressed up this time?

Anneep profile image
Anneep in reply to

You get a free Santa outfit so everyone will look the same!

in reply toAnneep

That will look fantastic! 😂

Great photo Anneep! Well done on your 10k event - it sounds like a lot of fun and as though you have well and truly got the bug! How great to have your running buddies cheering you in too.👍🙂 Keep on running!😀🏃🏽‍♀️🏅

Anneep in reply toSandraj39

Thank you Sandra I certainly will. My next target is to be an official parkrun tourist - only a few more to go :)

Elisabeth3 profile image
Elisabeth3Graduate10 in reply toAnneep

What makes one an official parkrun tourist?

Congratulations on the10k race. I can't do it in 67 mins like you. Hence, I hesitate whether to enroll to one.

Fatgirlslim19 profile image
Fatgirlslim1960minGraduate in reply toElisabeth3

Elisabeth3 , I can't even run 10k yet - 8k takes me about an hour - but I'm entering one! We're every bit as good at this as the speedy runners!

Elisabeth3 profile image
Elisabeth3Graduate10 in reply toFatgirlslim19

I admire your confidence. When is your race?

My dream is a 10k race but I would like to have a better pace. I hope to complete in 1h 20min, realistically.

Fatgirlslim19 profile image
Fatgirlslim1960minGraduate in reply toElisabeth3

I haven't entered it yet, but Cambridge 10k on 29th December. It sounds like a nice course. I've got to be honest, I haven't thought about how long it might take me, I just want to do it! 1hour 20 sounds doable though for you, no?

Elisabeth3 profile image
Elisabeth3Graduate10 in reply toFatgirlslim19

You can use a pace, etc. Calculator online. Use one that is not linear. It projected my 10k time 1h18mins.

If you can't find it, I can check and send you a link.

Fatgirlslim19 profile image
Fatgirlslim1960minGraduate in reply toElisabeth3

Ooh thank you for that! I'll have a look! Although I'll be just as happy to have run that distance, no matter how long it takes 😆

Elisabeth3 profile image
Elisabeth3Graduate10 in reply toFatgirlslim19

Ah, Cambridge is a bit far, 1h+ drive.

Fatgirlslim19 profile image
Fatgirlslim1960minGraduate in reply toElisabeth3

Same for me.

Elisabeth3 profile image
Elisabeth3Graduate10 in reply toFatgirlslim19

What makes you drive that far?

The time calculator is useful if you want to enter a race, have a PB, etc...

Fatgirlslim19 profile image
Fatgirlslim1960minGraduate in reply toElisabeth3

I dunno... It just looks a nice course and it won't be a hot time of year! I missed the local 10k because I got the date wrong 😣😆

Elisabeth3 profile image
Elisabeth3Graduate10 in reply toFatgirlslim19

I see. Defo no hot weather 🏜❌

😀another good example of maths? Missing the date. 😀

Now I admit I also missed a race in the summer by one week. 🤓🤔

Elisabeth3 profile image
Elisabeth3Graduate10 in reply toFatgirlslim19

Is Rother Valley Country Park too far? The 10km race is on Nov 17th.

This weekend is the last opportunity for early bird entry.

If it's not too far, would you be interested?

Fatgirlslim19 profile image
Fatgirlslim1960minGraduate in reply toElisabeth3

3 and a half hours 😬

Elisabeth3 profile image
Elisabeth3Graduate10 in reply toFatgirlslim19

Oops, that's a distance. Thanks for checking, anyway. X

Hi Elizabeth - I’ve been fairly slow and steady, my first 10k a couple of weeks ago was about an hour and 19 mins, what really helps is having people around you - I really wouldn’t worry about the time at all. You will still feel so proud of yourself.

A parkrun tourist is when you have done 20 different events, you then see your name on the UK parkrun site. There’s a Facebook group you can join too.

Fatgirlslim19 profile image
Fatgirlslim1960minGraduate in reply toAnneep

Did you do your first 10k only a couple of weeks ago? That's awesome! You are rocking this running malarkey!

Elisabeth3 profile image
Elisabeth3Graduate10 in reply toFatgirlslim19

She is, isn't she? 🏃🏻🎉

Elisabeth3 profile image
Elisabeth3Graduate10 in reply toAnneep

Wow, that's an improvement!

Unfortunately, I have no one to cheer me on a race.

Last time my husband came but stayed in the car.

I did park run at 3 places, hm, not really a tourist, am I?

Fatgirlslim19 profile image
Fatgirlslim1960minGraduate in reply toElisabeth3

Come to Cambridge, we can cheer each other on!

Elisabeth3 profile image
Elisabeth3Graduate10 in reply toFatgirlslim19

Haha, I have just sent you the same message simultaneously. 😃 Will see closer to the time.

Fatgirlslim19 profile image
Fatgirlslim1960minGraduate in reply toElisabeth3

😆 Elisabeth!

Anneep I'm sorry to hijack your post! But thank you for opening this discussion!

Anneep profile image
Anneep in reply toElisabeth3

To be fair I’m lucky as where I am in Hertfordshire there are a few around me. I’m also lucky as my partner joins me if he can, and he’s faster but stays with me - but most I’ve done on my own. I did a 5k race in the City in the summer and looked so miserable in the photos - so this time I made sure I tried to enjoy it, it definitely worked

Elisabeth3 profile image
Elisabeth3Graduate10 in reply toAnneep

I think there are a few here, too. It's me who may lack confidence.

I don't mind running on my own, but more support would boost me more.

Anneep profile image
Anneep in reply toElisabeth3

That’s the good thing about organised events like the Halloween one, the marshals were so fab they made you feel good :)

Elisabeth3 profile image
Elisabeth3Graduate10 in reply toAnneep

The marshals are also kind on the parkrun. They need our support, too.

Anneep profile image
Anneep in reply toElisabeth3

I marshalled this morning - it was really good fun

Elisabeth3 profile image
Elisabeth3Graduate10 in reply toAnneep

That's nice.

I like to shout out to the marshals with a 'thanks for marshalling', as when I marshal it is very rewarding to hear some appreciation.

But I don't volunteer much these days.

Anneep profile image
Anneep in reply toElisabeth3

It was a whole lot more fun than I thought it would be, and quite energising encouraging all the runners. I took photos too!

Elisabeth3 profile image
Elisabeth3Graduate10 in reply toAnneep

Yes, it is. You are part of the parkrun, without a run. 😃

They are, we have a little lunchtime running club and they are fab, we are called the Carrot Runners and the motto is ‘never leave a carrot behind’! However they definitely help my pace

Ssasqueen profile image

Awesome- well done - great photo and a great time. How are your legs today?

Anneep profile image
Anneep in reply toSsasqueen

Thank you, my legs are fine but my lower back is quite stiff. I’ve decided to marshal at parkrun tomorrow even though I’m desperate to get my numbers for tourism, I think I need to rest a couple of days

The first 10k race is so special and this one is particularly memorable with your Halloween outfit. You will be able to wear it every year too.

Your carrot club sounds great.

Anneep profile image
Anneep in reply toDexy5

Well, yes that’s an idea although next year’s outfits are already being discussed! One of the guys is saying he might be a nun, which would be fab! The carrots are great, we work in a University so it’s a sort of mascot.

JaoJao profile image

This is amazing Aneep. I’ve been looking at all the races at the Olympic Park as they do loads of midweek runs in the evening time which is great with colleagues working in the City.

Where do you run at lunchtime with your colleagues? I’ve been running along the wapping canal and around shadwell basin and there are 100s of runners along that route which is so comforting to see.

I hope to make it over to Olympic Park for a race at some

Point next year. You’re lucky you did this one, I’ve only just started looking at races and just didn’t catch it in time.

Anneep profile image
Anneep in reply toJaoJao

Hiya it was great, lovely course, and being a West Ham supporter it made me smile :) It was a RunThrough event and well organised. The marshals were fab - that’s why I’m going to marshal in the wind and rain tomorrow!

We’re based in Clerkenwell so usually run along the Regents Canal, very popular with runners and cyclists. We’ve started Plogging once a month now (going on Tuesday) which is jogging and litter picking! A much easier run as it’s stop\start!

JaoJao profile image
JaoJaoGraduate10 in reply toAnneep

Sounds great Anneep, enjoy tomorrow. Volunteering at running events is amazing too, really rewarding.

You plogging sounds fun too, I wish I knew some runners at my workplace but I don’t. I know there are runners because some 200 people are taking part in a corporate team for run in the dark on 13 November but I am not here for it sadly.

Anneep profile image
Anneep in reply toJaoJao

Is there any kind of internal bulletin? We use Yammer at work, so I found out about this club through that. There are only about 4 or so regulars but another 5/6 come occasionally. They do a walk/run group too. We even have our own t shirts, I was so proud to get mine!

JaoJao profile image
JaoJaoGraduate10 in reply toAnneep

No nothing like that. Although I may reach out the person who sent the email and ask them if there is a way to connect all the runners on a regular basis. X

Anneep profile image
Anneep in reply toJaoJao

Yes, do it! The others are probably thinking the same!
